Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Refund

I sat in the gas station parking lot for nearly five minutes without moving.
The paper trembled slightly in my hand.
It was an email printed from Celeste's personal account.
The recipient's name was Vanessa.
Her younger sister.
I knew Vanessa well enough to recognize her writing style. She was the kind of person who could turn an ordinary conversation into a negotiation about money.
I unfolded the paper completely.
The email was dated twelve days earlier.
Vanessa,
I've handled the vacation arrangements. Maya won't be joining us, and Andre won't know until everything is finalized.
I also need you to remember what we discussed about the trust.
If Maya continues living in this house, we need to make sure Andre understands that she is becoming a financial responsibility rather than an investment.
He's far too emotional about Rachel's money.
I stopped reading.
I read the paragraph again.
Then I continued.
Once Maya turns eighteen, she will have access to the remaining funds. I don't think that's a good idea. She has no understanding of money, and Andre will probably let her waste everything.
We need to get ahead of this.
There was a reply printed beneath it.
Vanessa's response.
Then stop treating her like she's part of the family. If Andre sees how expensive she is, he'll eventually understand that something needs to change.
I lowered the paper.
For a moment, I couldn't hear the traffic outside.
Maya leaned toward me.
"Dad?""
I folded the email.
"Where did you get this?""
"Devin gave it to me.""
Devin nodded from the back seat.
"Mom printed it. I found it in the study.""
"Why did you take it?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Because I heard them talking about Maya.""
I turned toward him.
"Who was talking?""
"Mom and Aunt Vanessa.""
"What did you hear?""
Devin rubbed his palms against his jeans.
"They were talking about the vacation. Then Aunt Vanessa said something about the house.""
Maya stared at him.
"What about the house?""
He hesitated.
"She said you shouldn't be allowed to stay here after you turn eighteen.""
Maya went pale.
I looked at the email again.
My daughter had been living in the house I owned, sleeping in the bedroom her mother had decorated, and quietly believing that she was simply an inconvenient member of a blended family.
Meanwhile, my wife and her sister had apparently been discussing how to make her financially unwelcome.
I started the engine.
"Where are we going?"" Devin asked.
"To the airport.""
Maya looked at me.
"But what about the tickets?""
"We'll figure it out.""
"Are you sure?""
I glanced at her.
"Sweetheart, I didn't bring you this far to leave you in a parking lot.""
For the next forty minutes, nobody said much.
I booked replacement tickets through the airline while Devin watched videos on his phone and Maya stared out the window.
The cost was unpleasant.
I didn't care.
By the time we arrived at the airport, I had also contacted my attorney, Daniel Brooks.
Daniel had handled the legal arrangements after Rachel's death.
He knew about the trust Rachel had established for Maya.
He also knew that Celeste had never been appointed as its trustee.
That detail suddenly mattered more than ever.
"Andre," Daniel answered, "what happened?""
"I need you to review something.""
"Is this about the vacation?""
I stopped walking.
"How do you know about the vacation?""
"Your wife called my office yesterday.""
My stomach dropped.
"What did she want?""
"She asked whether a parent could modify a minor child's inheritance arrangements without the child's consent.""
I looked toward Maya.
She was standing beside the check-in counter, holding her silver suitcase.
"Did you tell her she could?""
"Absolutely not. Why?""
I lowered my voice.
"Because I just discovered an email discussing Maya's inheritance and plans to make her leave my house.""
There was a long silence.
Then Daniel said, "Don't discuss this with Celeste over the phone. Send me everything you have.""
"I will.""
"And Andre?""
"Yes?""
"Do not sign anything she sends you.""
I frowned.
"What would she send me?""
"I don't know yet. But if she has been asking questions about Maya's trust, I want to know why.""
I ended the call.
At the check-in counter, an airline employee was typing something into her computer.
"Mr. Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"Your original booking was modified this morning. There appears to be a note from the travel agency requesting that the canceled passenger not be reinstated without additional authorization.""
I stared at her.
"Whose authorization?""
She checked the screen.
"Mrs. Celeste Bennett.""
I almost smiled.
Even after I had discovered everything, Celeste was still trying to control the situation.
"She's not the parent accompanying my daughter," I said.
"I am.""
The employee examined the documents.
After a few minutes, she nodded.
"Understood, sir. We can issue replacement tickets.""
While she worked, Maya stepped closer.
"Dad?""
"What's up?""
"Can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
She looked toward Devin.
"Does Mom hate me?""
The question landed between us.
I crouched slightly so I could look directly at her.
"No one gets to decide your worth by how they treat you, Maya.""
"That's not what I asked.""
I took a breath.
"I don't know what Celeste feels. But I know what she's done. And none of it is your fault.""
Maya nodded.
Her eyes filled again.
"I tried so hard.""
"I know.""
"I stayed out of her way. I helped with Devin. I never asked for expensive things. I even stopped inviting friends over because she said the house was already too crowded.""
My throat tightened.
"You don't have to make yourself smaller to deserve a place in this family.""
She wiped her cheek.
"Then why did she keep making me feel like I didn't belong?""
I had no answer.
The airline employee handed us the boarding passes.
We were finally going.
But before we reached security, my phone rang.
Celeste.
I answered.
"Andre, where are you?""
"At the airport.""
"What?""
"I'm taking the children on vacation.""
"You cannot be serious.""
"I'm very serious.""
She lowered her voice.
"Listen to me carefully. You're making a terrible mistake.""
"No. I'm making sure Maya isn't punished for something she didn't do.""
"She has manipulated you.""
I stopped walking.
"Don't.""
"She's been turning you against me for years.""
"Maya is sixteen.""
"Exactly! Old enough to understand that she can't always get what she wants.""
I looked at my daughter.
She was pretending not to listen.
"What does Vanessa know about Maya's trust?"" I asked.
The silence was immediate.
Then Celeste laughed nervously.
"What are you talking about?""
"Your email.""
Another pause.
"Which email?""
"The one discussing my daughter's inheritance.""
Her voice changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Andre, you have no idea what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
She exhaled.
"Vanessa was helping me understand the financial situation.""
"What financial situation?""
"The money Rachel left.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"That money belongs to Maya.""
"Not all of it.""
I stared at the phone.
"What?""
"Andre, you need to understand that Rachel's estate was complicated. You have responsibilities too. You've been supporting Maya for years.""
"She's my daughter.""
"And Devin is your son!""
The comparison was so absurd that I almost couldn't respond.
"Both children are my responsibility.""
"Then stop acting like Maya is the only one who matters!""
I ended the call.
My hands were shaking.
Daniel's warning echoed in my head.
Do not sign anything she sends you.
I sent him the email photograph.
Then I sent him the booking modification.
He replied almost immediately.
We need to speak privately as soon as you land.
I put the phone away.
At the departure gate, Devin sat beside Maya.
He opened a packet of crackers and offered her half.
She accepted it.
For the first time that morning, she almost smiled.
"Dad?"" Devin said.
"Yeah?""
"Are we still going to the resort?""
I looked at both children.
"Yes.""
"Even though Mom isn't coming?""
I considered the question.
Then I nodded.
"Especially because neither of you should have to pay for an adult's choices.""
Maya leaned her head against the chair.
A few minutes later, she fell asleep.
I watched her for a while.
Her silver suitcase stood beside my feet.
I remembered buying it with her when she was thirteen.
She had wanted a pink one.
Celeste had insisted that pink was childish.
Maya had chosen silver instead.
I hadn't thought much about it at the time.
Now I wondered how many little things I had overlooked because I was too busy trying to keep everyone happy.
My phone vibrated.
A new email from Daniel.
Andre, I've reviewed the documents you sent. There is something you need to know about the trust.
I opened it.
The message contained a photograph of the original trust agreement.
Daniel had highlighted a section.
It stated that Maya's inheritance was held in a protected account, with access granted to her at twenty-one.
The money could not be transferred, redirected, or used for household expenses without the approval of an independent trustee.
I read the paragraph twice.
Then I noticed Daniel's next message.
Your wife has no legal authority over these funds. However, someone recently attempted to obtain information about the account using your household address and personal details.
I stared at the screen.
Someone had tried to access Maya's inheritance.
And the attempt had happened three days before Celeste canceled her vacation ticket.
Then Daniel sent one final message.
The request was submitted using your electronic signature.
I looked at Maya.
She was still asleep.
I looked at Devin.
He was watching something on his phone.
Then I called Daniel.
"Who used my signature?""
His answer was quiet.
"We're still verifying the digital records.""
"Daniel, tell me what you know.""
He paused.
"The request was submitted through an account registered to Celeste.""
My stomach turned.
"Was it approved?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because the trust's independent trustee rejected it.""
I exhaled.
Then Daniel added something that made my blood run cold.
"Andre, there's another problem. The attempted transfer wasn't for a small amount.""
"How much?""
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
I looked out at the runway.
The plane waiting beyond the glass suddenly seemed very far away.
My wife hadn't just excluded my daughter from a family vacation.
May you like
She had been trying to get her hands on my daughter's future.
And she wasn't working alone.
