Chapter 7: The Safety Deposit Box

For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at the bank receipt in Vanessa's hand.
The date was three days earlier.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Celeste.
My wife had accessed Rachel's safety deposit box while I was sitting thousands of miles away, trying to understand why she had deliberately excluded my daughter from a family vacation.
I looked at Celeste.
"What's inside that box?""
She folded her arms.
"Nothing that concerns you.""
I almost laughed.
"Rachel was my wife.""
"And she's been dead for years, Andre. You need to stop treating every piece of paper she left behind like some sacred object.""
Maya stood beside Margaret.
Her face was pale.
"Did you take something that belonged to my mother?""
Celeste looked at her.
"Don't be dramatic.""
"Did you?""
"Your mother left behind a lot of things. Some of them have absolutely no relevance to your life.""
Maya lowered her eyes.
I stepped between them.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Celeste turned toward me.
"You're making a huge mistake.""
"Then tell me what's in the box.""
She shook her head.
"I don't have to explain myself.""
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Celeste, just tell him.""
My wife turned sharply.
"Stay out of this.""
"No. I'm done.""
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed another folded document.
She placed it on the coffee table.
It was a bank authorization form.
"I helped Celeste access the box," she said.
"But I didn't know what she intended to do with everything inside.""
I looked at her.
"Why did you help her?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because she told me the contents belonged to her.""
"On what basis?""
"She said Rachel had promised her certain documents before she died.""
Margaret shook her head.
"That's a lie.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"I know that now.""
Celeste stepped forward.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
But Vanessa continued.
"Three days ago, Celeste asked me to accompany her to the bank. She said there was a document inside that would prove she had rights to the house.""
I stared at her.
"What document?""
"An amended will.""
Margaret immediately shook her head.
"Rachel never amended her will.""
"That's what I thought," Vanessa said.
"But Celeste insisted.""
I looked at the bank receipt.
"Did you see the document?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Was it signed?""
"Yes.""
"By Rachel?""
She hesitated.
Then she looked directly at me.
"I don't think so.""
Celeste suddenly grabbed the receipt.
"That's enough!""
She tore it in half.
The sound was small.
But in that silent room, it felt enormous.
I watched the pieces fall to the carpet.
Then I took out my phone.
"Daniel.""
He answered immediately.
"Andre?""
"I need you to arrange an emergency preservation request for a safety deposit box at First National Bank. Rachel Bennett's box.""
"Did someone access it?""
"Celeste. Three days ago.""
Daniel went silent.
Then he asked, "Did she remove anything?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
"Don't let her destroy any additional documents. I'll contact the bank's legal department.""
I ended the call.
Celeste stared at me.
"You're calling lawyers over a safety deposit box?""
"I'm calling my attorney because my wife has been accessing documents connected to my daughter's inheritance.""
She shook her head.
"You've become obsessed.""
"No, Celeste. I've finally started paying attention.""
I looked toward Devin.
He had been standing quietly near the staircase.
"Buddy, can you take Maya upstairs for a moment?""
He nodded.
Maya hesitated.
"Dad?""
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
She looked at Celeste.
Then she followed her brother.
Once they were gone, I turned toward Vanessa.
"Tell me everything.""
Vanessa sat down.
Her face had lost its usual confidence.
"Celeste told me Rachel had created a second will shortly before her death. She said the original will had been changed because Rachel was worried you would eventually remarry.""
I frowned.
"That makes no sense.""
"I know.""
"What did she claim the second will said?""
Vanessa looked at Celeste.
"She said Rachel had promised to leave the house to her.""
Margaret let out a quiet breath.
"Rachel would never have done that.""
Vanessa nodded.
"That's what I told her.""
I looked at Celeste.
"Why didn't you tell me about this supposed amended will?""
"Because you wouldn't have listened.""
"Try me.""
She looked away.
Vanessa continued.
"Celeste said she wanted to settle the matter before Maya turned eighteen. She believed that once Maya became an adult, she could challenge anything involving the estate.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"That's why you tried to access the trust.""
Celeste snapped.
"Stop making accusations!""
I ignored her.
"How much money did you think you could get?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars was supposed to be transferred first.""
"And afterward?""
She looked at me.
"Celeste wanted to use the money to purchase a property.""
"What property?""
Vanessa looked down.
"A house.""
I waited.
Then she said, "In her name.""
The room went completely silent.
I turned toward my wife.
"You were going to use Maya's inheritance to buy yourself a house?""
Celeste's face hardened.
"It was an investment.""
"For whom?""
"For this family!""
"Which family?""
She stared at me.
I continued.
"Because from where I'm standing, you were planning to take my daughter's money, claim my daughter's house, and leave her with nothing.""
Celeste's eyes flashed.
"She has you! She has your salary! She has everything!""
I shook my head.
"You really believe being a father means I owe you control over everything she owns?""
She didn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
"Andre, I spoke with the bank. They have temporarily flagged the box pending legal review. However, there is a problem.""
"What?""
"Celeste was listed as an authorized visitor under an older access arrangement.""
I frowned.
"Who authorized that?""
Daniel paused.
"Your signature appears on the original authorization.""
I stared at the phone.
"I never authorized her.""
"I know. We need to investigate how that document was created.""
I looked toward Celeste.
She was watching me.
Then Daniel continued.
"There's something else. The bank recorded a second visit to the box last week. Someone removed an envelope and signed the collection receipt.""
"Who?""
"Your wife's sister.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked down.
"Did you take something from that box?""
Vanessa nodded.
"An envelope.""
"What was inside?""
"I didn't open it.""
Celeste suddenly shouted.
"You're lying!""
Vanessa stood.
"No, I'm not!""
"You told me you destroyed it!""
My heart stopped.
I slowly turned toward Celeste.
"What did you just say?""
She froze.
Vanessa looked at her.
Then back at me.
Celeste tried to recover.
"I meant the envelope was supposed to be destroyed.""
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"What's inside it?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Rachel's original letter.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"The letter addressed to me?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is it?""
"In my car.""
Celeste rushed toward the door.
I moved in front of her.
"Don't.""
"Get out of my way!""
"Not until you tell me what you've been hiding.""
She looked at me with pure hatred.
Then she said something I will never forget.
"Rachel was going to destroy my life even after she died.""
I stared at her.
"What did she do?""
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"She made sure you would never be able to give me anything.""
For the first time, I understood how deeply she resented my first wife.
It wasn't simply jealousy.
It was the knowledge that Rachel had protected Maya in ways Celeste could never control.
Vanessa quietly walked toward the front door.
"I'll get the envelope.""
Celeste grabbed her arm.
"Don't you dare!""
Vanessa pulled free.
"You told me it was just a letter. You said Rachel had written something embarrassing about Andre. You never told me what was really inside.""
She disappeared outside.
Celeste stood motionless.
I watched her.
"Why did you marry me?""
She looked up.
"What?""
"Was it because you loved me?""
Her expression changed.
For a moment, I thought she might answer honestly.
Then she said, "I loved the life we could have had.""
I nodded slowly.
There was my answer.
Vanessa returned carrying a small white envelope.
It was sealed.
Rachel's handwriting was on the front.
For Andre. Only if Celeste ever attempts to take what belongs to Maya.
My hands began shaking.
I took the envelope.
Margaret stepped beside me.
"Rachel knew," she whispered.
I looked at the handwriting.
Then at Celeste.
"Did you know what this letter said?""
She didn't answer.
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small folded sheet of paper.
The letter began with a sentence that made my heart stop.
My darling Andre, if you're reading this, then the person I feared has finally shown you who she really is.
I sat down.
And I began to read.
I need you to know that I never wanted you to live your life in fear of being alone. I wanted you to find happiness again. But I need you to protect Maya.
Celeste came to see me in the hospital. She asked me to change the trust. She said she would love Maya as her own if I gave her control over the money.
I refused.
She became angry.
She told me that Maya would eventually be pushed out of your life because she would always remind you of me.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
I told her that if she ever hurt my daughter, I would make sure the law protected her.
Then she said something I cannot forget.
She said she would wait until I was gone.
I stopped reading.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Celeste had gone completely pale.
I looked at the second folded sheet.
It contained the name and contact information of Rachel's original estate attorney.
And beneath it was one final sentence.
Andre, there is one more truth I need you to know. Celeste didn't come into our lives by accident.
I stared at the words.
Then I looked at my wife.
"What does this mean?""
Celeste stepped backward.
"Give me that letter.""
I didn't move.
"Why did Rachel write this?""
"She was sick. She was frightened. She wasn't thinking clearly.""
Margaret shook her head.
"She was clearer than any of us.""
I looked down at the final sentence.
She knew about you before you ever met her.
My heart began pounding.
I looked at Celeste.
"Before we met?""
She said nothing.
Then Vanessa whispered from beside the door.
"Andre, there's something you don't know about how Celeste first approached you.""
I turned.
Vanessa's face was wet with tears.
May you like
"She already knew who you were.""
And suddenly, the entire beginning of my marriage seemed to collapse.
