Chapter 14: The Truth Everyone Buried
I should have listened to Richard.
I knew that.
I knew meeting Vanessa alone was probably the worst decision I could make.
But I also knew something else.
Vanessa had spent years controlling the story.
And now, for the first time, she wanted to talk.
That meant she was afraid.
We met at an abandoned café two miles from the old house.
I wasn’t alone.
Richard waited outside.
The investigator was on the way.
I made sure of that.
Vanessa sat in the corner booth.
No makeup.
No perfect hair.
No confident smile.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
For the first time, I saw her as a person.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I finally saw the cracks.
“You came.””
I sat across from her.
“You asked me to.””
She looked down.
“You look like Claire.””
The words surprised me.
I almost stood up.
“Don’t.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Don’t pretend you miss her.””
Her expression changed.
“I do.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You hated her.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I hated what she had.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“It isn’t.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said:
“Your mother knew I was desperate.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew my life before Daniel.””
I waited.
Vanessa sighed.
“I was drowning.””
I didn’t feel sympathy yet.
Not after everything.
“I had debts.””
“Financial?””
“Yes.””
“And Mom knew?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“She tried to help you.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“She did.””
The answer shocked me.
“She helped me.””
“Then why?””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“Because she still looked at me like I was beneath her.””
I frowned.
“That’s not true.””
“You weren’t there.””
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“But I know my mother.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She was kind.””
That sounded like an admission.
“She was always kind.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“And somehow that made it worse.””
I didn’t understand.
“She could forgive everyone.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Except herself.””
My heart tightened.
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
“Claire knew Daniel was struggling.””
My expression changed.
“She knew about his business?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“She helped him.””
I froze.
“With money?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your mother saved him.””
My father.
The man who had later considered changing her wishes.
The man who stood silently while I was hurt.
“He owed everything to her.””
Vanessa’s voice became bitter.
“And he still chose me.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Daniel came to me after Claire died.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“He was broken.””
She laughed sadly.
“And I was there.””
My hands tightened.
“You manipulated him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I did.””
She looked down.
“I convinced him Claire had hidden things.””
My stomach turned.
“You planted doubts.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I wanted what she had.””
There it was.
The truth.
Not an excuse.
Not an accident.
A choice.
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
I stayed silent.
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She placed a photograph on the table.
My mother.
And someone else.
A man.
I recognized him.
Mark Wilson.
My father’s best friend.
“What is this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Mark wasn’t just a witness.””
I looked closer.
The picture showed my mother speaking with him.
“What was he doing?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He was helping Claire.””
I frowned.
“Helping her with what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Finding out who was stealing from her.””
My heart raced.
“Then why did he sign the document?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Because he was forced.””
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
The question was bigger than Vanessa.
Bigger than my father.
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“Someone who still has access to everything.””
I stared.
“Who?””
She looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather was dead.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was.””
The answer made no sense.
Then she slid another document across the table.
I read the date.
Three months after my grandfather supposedly died.
A bank transfer.
A signature.
His name.
Impossible.
“That’s not real.””
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s why your mother was investigating.””
My hands shook.
“My grandfather was involved?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Someone was using his identity.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the café door opened.
Richard walked in.
His face was pale.
“Emily.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“We found the person who has been moving the money.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
Then said:
“The account belongs to someone you know.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Richard looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“Your father’s lawyer.””
I stared.
The man who had handled everything after my mother died.
The man who prepared the documents.
The man who knew every secret.
And then Richard added:
“His name is Daniel’s childhood friend.””
I whispered:
“Mark.””
Richard nodded.
“But that’s not the worst part.””
My blood ran cold.
“What is?””
May you like
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“She wasn’t working alone.””
