Chapter 12: The Choice My Father Made
I stopped breathing.
No.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I did.
Somewhere deep inside, I had always known there was a missing piece.
A reason my father looked guilty.
A reason he avoided every question about my mother.
But seeing his name on that document made everything real.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
Richard placed the document on the table.
“Mr. Carter, this record requires an explanation.””
My father stared at it.
His hands started shaking.
“I didn’t change her medication.””
Richard remained calm.
“Your signature authorized the request.””
“I signed something else.””
“What?””
My father looked lost.
“I don’t remember.””
Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.
Again.
I noticed.
“You do.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“You know what happened.””
She said nothing.
My father turned toward her.
“Vanessa?””
She looked away.
And that was the moment I understood.
They weren’t just hiding the same secret.
They were hiding different pieces of it.
Richard spoke.
“The request was submitted through a private healthcare coordinator.””
My father looked confused.
“I never contacted anyone.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“Claire told me Daniel trusted Vanessa with household matters.””
My father closed his eyes.
“She handled paperwork.””
I felt sick.
There it was.
The opening.
The mistake.
The thing Vanessa had used.
“She had access.””
My father nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Richard looked at the document again.
“The authorization was made two days before Claire collapsed.””
My father whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire was already suspicious.””
I looked at him.
“She knew.””
He nodded.
“She told me she thought Vanessa was planning something.””
My chest tightened.
“And what did you do?””
My father looked at me.
“I didn’t believe her.””
The answer hurt more than anything.
Because my mother had been fighting alone.
And the person she trusted most had dismissed her.
“You didn’t believe your wife.””
“I thought she was scared.””
“And you believed Vanessa.””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I turned away.
I couldn’t look at him.
Richard’s phone rang.
He answered quickly.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then his face changed.
“Are you sure?””
Everyone watched him.
He ended the call.
“What?””
I asked.
He looked at me.
“The healthcare records were altered.””
My heart pounded.
“By who?””
He hesitated.
“Someone inside the hospital.””
The room went silent.
My father looked confused.
“But why?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“To hide that the medication change was not accidental.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
This wasn’t just Vanessa.
This was bigger.
Someone had helped her.
Someone had covered it up.
Margaret whispered:
“Claire knew.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to look for one thing.””
“What thing?””
Margaret reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small key.
A tiny silver key.
“My mother gave you that?””
She nodded.
“She told me not to give it to you unless you discovered the truth.””
My fingers closed around it.
“What does it open?””
Margaret looked at my father.
Then at Vanessa.
“Something Claire hid before she died.””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
She grabbed the key from my hand.
Everyone froze.
“Give that back.””
Her voice was no longer controlled.
No longer polite.
It was desperate.
I stared at her.
“What is it?””
She tightened her grip.
“Nothing.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter.””
She ignored him.
My father looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Panic.
Real panic.
Because she knew.
Whatever that key opened was worse than everything we had already discovered.
I reached for it.
She pulled away.
“No.””
The word came out like a warning.
Not to me.
To everyone.
My father stood.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
And finally, she said:
“Your mother left something behind.””
A pause.
“Something that could destroy all of us.””
The key slipped from her fingers.
May you like
It hit the floor.
And before anyone could pick it up, Vanessa ran.
