Chapter 10: The Night My Mother Died
For eighteen years, I had carried one version of my mother’s death.
A simple story.
A painful story.
But simple.
She got sick.
She got worse.
The doctors tried everything.
And then one morning, she was gone.
That was the story my father gave me.
That was the story everyone repeated.
But now he was standing in front of me, tears in his eyes, telling me the story was a lie.
“Your mother didn’t die the way I told you.””
The sentence stayed in the air.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
My father looked at the floor.
Like if he didn’t look at me, he wouldn’t have to see what he had done.
“Then tell me.””
My voice sounded different.
Calmer.
And somehow that scared everyone more.
“Tell me what happened.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice cut through the room.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
She froze.
For years, Vanessa had controlled every conversation.
Every argument.
Every moment where I tried to defend myself.
But something had changed.
Maybe it was my mother’s letter.
Maybe it was finally knowing that I wasn’t imagining everything.
Or maybe it was realizing that the people who were supposed to protect me had spent years protecting themselves.
My father sat down.
He looked exhausted.
“I need you to understand something.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent years trying to understand you.””
My throat tightened.
“I understood when you were sad after Mom died.””
I swallowed.
“I understood when you worked late.””
“I understood when you were tired.””
My eyes burned.
“But I never understood why you watched someone hurt me.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Those two words hurt.
Because he wasn’t denying it.
He knew.
Richard stood near the window, quietly listening.
Margaret sat beside me, holding the edge of the chair.
My father finally spoke.
“The night your mother got sick, Vanessa came over.””
I stared at him.
“She was there?””
He nodded.
“She said she wanted to help.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What happened?””
My father rubbed his hands together.
“Your mother had been going through her financial records.””
“Why?””
“Because she noticed things missing.””
My heart started beating faster.
“The inheritance?””
He nodded.
“She believed someone had been looking into her accounts.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t meet my eyes.
My father continued.
“Your mother confronted Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
“What did Vanessa say?””
My father looked at her.
For the first time, there was anger in his eyes.
“She denied everything.””
Vanessa immediately spoke.
“Because I did nothing.””
Nobody responded.
My father continued.
“Your mother was upset. She asked Vanessa to leave.””
I frowned.
“And then?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Then your mother collapsed.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She had been feeling sick already.””
“But you said it was sudden.””
He looked away.
“I lied.””
The honesty was worse than any excuse.
“Why?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Of losing everything.””
I felt sick.
“Everything?””
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“I had just found out about the financial problems.””
My heart stopped.
“What financial problems?””
Vanessa looked furious.
“Daniel.””
“No,” he said quietly.
Then he looked at me.
“You deserve the truth.””
That was the first time I heard him choose me.
Years too late.
But I heard it.
“My business was failing.””
I stared.
“You never told me.””
“I was ashamed.””
“And Vanessa?””
He swallowed.
“She offered to help.””
I almost laughed.
“She offered?””
My father nodded.
“She said she knew people who could help manage the estate.””
Margaret shook her head.
“She manipulated you.””
My father didn’t argue.
“I know.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So my mother found out.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Your mother was paranoid.””
My father immediately looked at her.
“Stop.””
Everyone froze.
Because Daniel had never spoken to Vanessa like that.
Not once.
She stared at him.
“You’re blaming me?””
He looked devastated.
“I’m blaming myself.””
That answer surprised me.
Because for the first time, he wasn’t trying to protect his image.
He was admitting he failed.
“What happened after Mom collapsed?””
My father looked down.
“I called emergency services.””
“And?””
“They took her to the hospital.””
I waited.
“There was something wrong with the paperwork.””
Richard stepped closer.
“What paperwork?””
My father looked at him.
“The medication records.””
Everyone went silent.
My father continued.
“The hospital noticed that some of your mother’s medications had been changed.””
My hand went to my mouth.
“Changed?””
He nodded.
“She had been taking a prescription for months.””
“Who changed it?””
My father didn’t answer.
But nobody needed him to.
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“No.””
She stepped back.
“I didn’t.””
My father whispered:
“Vanessa…”
She looked at him.
“Don’t.””
The fear in her voice was obvious.
Richard immediately pulled out his phone.
“We need to document everything.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“This is insane.””
But nobody believed her anymore.
Then Margaret spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her purse again.
Another envelope.
“I wasn’t supposed to give this to you unless the recording was heard.””
My hands trembled.
“What is it?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Your mother’s medical report.””
My father looked shocked.
“You had that?””
“She asked me to keep copies.””
I opened it.
The pages were old.
But one line stood out.
A doctor’s note.
*Patient condition worsened following possible medication interaction. Further review recommended.*
Possible medication interaction.
My mother hadn’t just gotten sick.
Something had happened.
Something nobody wanted me to know.
Then Richard’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
His expression changed.
He looked at me.
Then at my father.
“We need to leave.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
He lowered the phone.
“Because the investigator just found another record.””
“What record?””
Richard looked serious.
“A payment made the night your mother collapsed.””
My blood ran cold.
“From who?””
He stared at the screen.
“Vanessa Carter.””
The room exploded into chaos.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered the words that made everything worse.
“She wasn’t supposed to find that.””
