Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Smile
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even Vanessa looked shocked by what she had just admitted.
She realized it a second too late.
Her own words had betrayed her.
“She wasn’t supposed to find that.””
My father stared at her.
“Find what?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
She tried to recover.
“I meant the payment.””
Richard stepped closer.
“What payment?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was the problem.
She always had an answer.
Always had an explanation.
But now she had nothing.
My father stood.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you’re innocent.””
The room went silent.
I had never heard him say those words to her.
Not once.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“After everything I did for you?””
My father looked disgusted.
“What does that mean?””
She stared at him.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I think I was stupid.””
That seemed to hurt her.
“You needed me.””
My father shook his head.
“I needed help.””
Vanessa smiled.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“You needed someone who would tell you that Claire was wrong.””
My stomach tightened.
She said my mother’s name like it was an insult.
“You hated that she always saw through you.””
My father looked at her.
“Don’t talk about her.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Why? Because now you suddenly care?””
The words hit him.
Because some part of them was true.
He had failed my mother.
He had failed me.
But Vanessa was not innocent.
Richard interrupted.
“Everyone needs to stop talking and start answering questions.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“What was the payment?””
She remained silent.
“Mrs. Carter.””
Finally, she said:
“It was for information.””
My stomach dropped.
“What information?””
She looked at me.
Not my father.
Me.
“Your mother’s financial records.””
I felt numb.
“You were spying on her.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
The word came from my father.
Vanessa looked at him.
He looked broken.
“You were.””
She stared.
Then she laughed softly.
“You really want to pretend you didn’t know?””
My father froze.
“What?””
“You knew I was looking.””
The room became silent.
My father shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“You told me to find out what Claire was hiding.””
My father’s face lost all color.
I felt like the ground disappeared beneath me.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
But the word sounded weak.
“I didn’t know she would…”
He stopped.
Would what?
Steal?
Manipulate?
Destroy?
I couldn’t finish the sentence.
“You hired her.””
My father sat down.
“I asked her to look into finances.””
Richard looked at him.
“Without your wife’s permission?””
My father looked away.
“Yes.””
My hands shook.
“So Mom was right.””
Nobody answered.
“She knew.””
Margaret whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked at the ceiling.
Trying not to cry.
My mother spent her final weeks knowing the people closest to her were betraying her.
And I had spent years thinking she simply got unlucky.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You all want to blame me.””
I turned toward her.
“Because you’re the one who destroyed everything.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what I lost.””
I stared.
“You lost nothing.””
“You don’t know that.””
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
For once, I wanted her to speak.
I wanted to hear every ugly truth.
And finally, she did.
“Claire promised Daniel would leave everything to you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at my father.
“She knew.””
My father looked confused.
“Knew what?””
“That you planned to change the inheritance after she died.””
The room froze.
I turned toward my father.
“What?””
He looked horrified.
“I never changed anything.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You thought about it.””
My father went silent.
And that silence told me enough.
“You considered taking my inheritance.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I thought about using some of it to save the house.””
I stared.
The house.
The house where Vanessa cut my dress.
The house where I spent years feeling unwanted.
“You were going to use Mom’s money to protect yourself.””
My father looked ashamed.
“I didn’t do it.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“But you wanted to.””
The truth hurt.
But it also freed me.
Because now I finally knew.
My mother wasn’t overprotective.
She wasn’t paranoid.
She was preparing me for exactly this.
Richard received another notification.
He looked at the screen.
“Emily.””
I turned.
“What now?””
His face was serious.
“The investigator found the person who approved the medication change.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Richard looked at the document.
Then he said:
“It was authorized by a family member.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
But Richard shook his head.
“No.””
The room froze.
“It wasn’t her.””
My father whispered:
“Then who?””
May you like
Richard looked directly at him.
“The authorization came from Daniel Carter.””
