Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Locked Door
I stared at the photograph until my hands went numb.
Colleen.
Standing outside my apartment.
Holding my phone.
The woman who had hugged me while I cried.
The woman who told me Adrian was gone.
The woman who said she would always think of me as family.
She had been there.
Before Adrian died.
Before everything fell apart.
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing left to say.
The evidence was sitting in my hand.
And somehow, I still wanted someone to explain that I was wrong.
That there was another woman with the same face.
The same silver hair.
The same posture.
But there wasn’t.
It was her.
“Mom.””
Julian’s voice was barely a whisper.
Colleen looked like she had aged years in seconds.
“I can explain.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone could explain.
That was the one thing this family was good at.
Explaining after the damage was already done.
“Why were you outside my apartment?””
My voice sounded strangely calm.
That scared me more than anger.
Colleen looked down.
“Meredith…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Not another secret.””
She closed her eyes.
“I went there because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of what Adrian had found.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid of Adrian?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I was afraid of losing him.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you hurt him?””
“I didn’t.””
“Your picture says otherwise.””
She looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“I was trying to stop something.””
“What?””
“The person who was manipulating everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
Of course.
Another silence.
Another missing piece.
I turned toward Julian.
“You knew.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“How long?””
He looked down.
“Since the night Adrian died.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew my phone was used?””
“Yes.””
“You knew someone was trying to make it look like I betrayed him?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Julian’s face broke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were protecting the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Because we all knew it was true.
Julian looked away.
“Adrian made me promise.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He told me not to tell you unless I knew who was responsible.””
“And did you?””
His silence answered.
“No.””
I looked around.
At all of them.
“How many more things are there?””
Nobody answered.
I felt something inside me finally break.
Not because they lied.
I expected lies now.
Because I realized Adrian died believing I was safe.
And the people he trusted had spent three months deciding what I was allowed to know.
“I want the flash drive.””
Victor immediately handed it to me.
Julian stepped forward.
“Meredith—”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I’m done waiting.””
I walked toward a small table near the entrance and opened my laptop from my work bag.
My hands shook as I plugged in the drive.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then a folder appeared.
ADRIAN_FINAL.
I stared at the name.
Final.
A word I hated.
Inside were dozens of files.
Financial records.
Photos.
Emails.
Videos.
One file stood out.
OPEN_LAST.
I clicked it.
A video appeared.
Adrian was sitting in his car.
The camera angle was from the dashboard.
He looked tired.
But alive.
My breath caught.
“Meredith.””
He was speaking to me again.
“If you’re watching this, then things went worse than I expected.””
I touched the screen.
I wanted to reach through it.
I wanted to tell him to stop.
To come home.
To tell me everything.
“I found the person who started all of this.””
My heart raced.
“I thought it was about money.””
He shook his head.
“I was wrong.””
The video paused for a second.
Then Adrian continued.
“It was about you.””
My breathing stopped.
“Someone wanted access to my accounts, my company, and my life.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“But they couldn’t control me.””
A sad smile appeared.
“So they decided to control the person I loved.””
I covered my mouth.
“Meredith, if someone is trying to make you believe I didn’t trust you, don’t believe them.””
A tear fell.
“Because the truth is, I trusted you more than anyone.””
The video became darker.
Adrian looked toward the car window.
Like he was worried someone was watching.
“There is one person you need to find.””
My heart pounded.
“Not because they are guilty.””
A pause.
“Because they know who is.””
The screen froze.
Then Adrian said a name.
A name nobody expected.
“Rachel.””
I stared.
Rachel.
The florist who had given me the wedding job.
The woman who called me that morning.
The woman who said she was sick.
The woman who sent me to Hawthorne Estate.
“No.””
I whispered.
Everyone looked at me.
“Who is Rachel?”” Julian asked.
I looked up.
“You know her?””
Julian frowned.
“No.””
But Victor’s expression changed.
“You said Rachel?””
“Yes.””
Victor went pale.
“Rachel Morgan?””
I nodded slowly.
“Why?””
He looked at the screen.
“Because she worked with Adrian.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“She wasn’t just another florist.””
I felt cold.
“What was she?””
Victor hesitated.
“Adrian’s former accountant.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
The morning replayed in my mind.
The phone call.
Her voice.
Her asking me to cover the wedding.
Sending me here.
Why?
Why would she do that?
Unless…
I looked at the screen again.
The video had ended.
But there was one final file.
A voice recording.
I clicked it.
Static.
Then Rachel’s voice.
“I know you’re going to find this eventually.””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“Adrian was too smart to leave everything where someone could erase it.””
My heart pounded.
“Meredith, if you’re listening, I need you to know something.””
A pause.
“I lied to you.””
The room went completely silent.
“I wasn’t sick that morning.””
My blood ran cold.
“I needed you at that wedding.””
I stared at the laptop.
“Because I knew Colleen would be there.””
My hands went cold.
“She had to see you.””
The recording continued.
“She had to know Adrian’s message reached you.””
A pause.
Then Rachel whispered:
“But there is one thing Adrian never found out.””
Everyone leaned closer.
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“The person who caused the crash wasn’t trying to kill Adrian.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“They were trying to kill you.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
A voice I had heard hundreds of times.
A voice from my own memories.
“Meredith.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
And it wasn’t Colleen.
It wasn’t Julian.
It wasn’t Claire.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone I had never suspected.
The voice whispered:
“You finally know enough.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who has been protecting you since the beginning.””
My heart raced.
“No.””
A quiet laugh.
“Adrian told you not to trust comfort without answers.””
The line went silent for a second.
Then the person said:
“But he never told you to question the person who brought you the truth.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
The answer came softly.
And it changed everything.
May you like
“I’m the reason Adrian died.””
The call ended.
