Chapter 10: The Last Flower Adrian Left Behind
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
The call had ended.
But the voice remained.
I’m the reason Adrian died.
Those words echoed louder than anything else.
The room around me disappeared.
The wedding guests.
The flowers.
The people who had spent months hiding pieces of the truth.
None of it mattered.
Because someone had just confessed.
Someone who knew Adrian.
Someone who knew me.
Someone who had been close enough to know exactly how to destroy our lives.
“Meredith.””
Julian’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“Who was it?””
I stared at the phone.
“I don’t know.””
But even as I said it, something inside me already knew.
Because the voice hadn’t sounded like a stranger.
It sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Victor looked at me carefully.
“Did they identify themselves?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“What did they say?””
I hesitated.
Everyone watched me.
Then I whispered:
“They said they were the reason Adrian died.””
The room changed.
Julian’s face went pale.
Colleen covered her mouth.
Claire took a step back.
And then Claire said something that made my blood run cold.
“I know that voice.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I know who it was.””
Nobody moved.
“Who?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I’m not sure.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“Because I only heard it once.””
“When?””
“The night Adrian died.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Claire swallowed.
“When I arrived at the crash.””
Everyone went silent.
“You heard that person there?””
She nodded.
“I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. Adrian was hurt.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And then someone else arrived.””
“Who?””
Claire looked at Julian.
Then at me.
“I never saw their face.””
The frustration almost overwhelmed me.
“But you heard their voice.””
“Yes.””
“And you recognize it.””
“Yes.””
“Then who was it?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“It sounded like…”
She stopped.
“Like who?””
Her voice barely came out.
“Like Rachel.””
The name hit the room like a gunshot.
Rachel.
The woman who called me that morning.
The woman who sent me to the wedding.
The woman who knew exactly where I would be.
The woman who claimed Adrian had trusted her.
I felt sick.
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“You said she was the one who arranged for you to come here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I thought back.
Rachel’s words.
Her urgency.
Her insistence.
She needed me to take the job.
She knew Colleen would be there.
She knew I would find the truth.
Or at least part of it.
But why?
If she was responsible, why lead me here?
Unless she wanted me to uncover everything.
Unless this was part of the plan.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Rachel.
I stared at the screen.
Everyone saw my expression.
“What is it?”” Julian asked.
I didn’t answer.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*Meet me where Adrian proposed. Come alone.*
My heart stopped.
Because I knew exactly where that was.
The old botanical garden near the lake.
The place where Adrian had taken me two years earlier.
The place where he got down on one knee surrounded by flowers.
The place where he promised me forever.
A place only a few people knew.
I looked at the message again.
Then at everyone in the room.
“I need to go.””
Julian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
His face fell.
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
“So was Adrian.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
They were supposed to.
Victor stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t go alone.””
The old version of me would have agreed.
The old version of me would have trusted someone to protect me.
But that version of me had buried a man she loved while everyone around her kept secrets.
“No.””
I grabbed my bag.
“If Rachel wants to talk, I need to hear what she has to say.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Meredith, please.””
I looked at her.
The pain in her eyes was real.
I believed that now.
Not because she was innocent.
But because people could be guilty and still regret what they had done.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because Adrian loved you.””
That almost broke me.
Because it was true.
No matter how much the truth hurt, one thing remained.
Adrian loved me.
And I loved him.
“I’ll be back.””
Julian grabbed my arm.
“Meredith.””
I looked at his hand.
He immediately let go.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology surprised me.
Not because it fixed anything.
But because it was the first honest thing he had said.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have trusted you.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
I walked away.
The botanical garden looked exactly the same.
That was the cruelest part.
The world kept preserving beautiful places even after they became painful.
The lake was still calm.
The flowers were still blooming.
The bench where Adrian proposed was still beneath the old oak tree.
But Adrian wasn’t there.
He would never be there again.
I stood beside the bench.
And waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then I heard footsteps.
Rachel appeared from the path.
She looked exhausted.
Not like someone who was hiding.
Like someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“Meredith.””
I didn’t move.
“Tell me the truth.””
She stopped.
“I know.””
“No more explanations.””
I looked at her.
“No more protecting me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
“Are you?””
“Yes.””
“Because Adrian died?””
She looked away.
“Because I helped create the situation where he died.””
My heart tightened.
“Explain.””
Rachel sat on the bench.
“I was Adrian’s accountant.””
“I know.””
“I found the missing money first.””
“Your name was on the records.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“But Adrian knew I didn’t steal it.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone was afraid.
“It was Claire’s father who started the fraud.””
I listened.
“But someone inside Parker Financial helped him.””
“Who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Colleen.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
The way she said it made me look up.
“You don’t know.””
“What do you mean?””
“Colleen wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
I felt cold.
“Then who was?””
Rachel looked at the flowers beside the lake.
“Adrian’s father.””
I froze.
“His father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Rachel swallowed.
“Because the person using his accounts and his old business connections was someone who knew everything about the family.””
My mind raced.
“Who?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“The person who inherited everything.””
Silence.
Then I understood.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Julian?””
“No.””
I froze.
“Then who?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“The person Adrian trusted to manage the company after his father died.””
I waited.
My heart pounding.
“Victor.””
Everything stopped.
Victor.
The man who brought evidence.
The man who helped reveal the truth.
The man who seemed like the only person telling me everything.
Rachel continued:
“Adrian discovered Victor was moving money through fake accounts.””
I shook my head.
“But Victor helped me.””
“Because Adrian planned for that.””
“What?””
“Adrian knew Victor would try to control the evidence.””
I remembered Adrian’s recording.
Trust the person who brings you the truth, even if it hurts.
Be careful of the person who gives you comfort without answers.
My blood ran cold.
Rachel whispered:
“Adrian knew someone would find the box.””
I stared at her.
“Then why didn’t he tell me who it was?””
“Because he didn’t know if you would survive knowing too soon.””
A tear slipped down my face.
“Where is Victor now?””
Rachel looked toward the path.
My stomach dropped.
“Meredith.””
I turned.
Victor was standing behind us.
Holding something in his hand.
A knife.
Not raised.
Not threatening.
Just there.
But enough.
“You always were too curious.””
My blood froze.
Rachel stood.
“Victor.””
He sighed.
“I really hoped you wouldn’t make this difficult.””
I stepped back.
“You killed Adrian.””
He looked sad.
Almost offended.
“No.””
A pause.
“I made Adrian disappear.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Victor smiled slightly.
“Because Adrian was going to destroy everything.””
“You mean expose you.””
“Yes.””
He took a step closer.
“But he made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He underestimated how much you loved him.””
I felt something shift.
Because Adrian’s final plan suddenly made sense.
The box.
The recordings.
The clues.
He knew Victor would come after the truth.
But he also knew one thing.
I would never stop looking.
Victor lifted the knife slightly.
And then a voice came from behind him.
“Actually, Victor…”
Victor froze.
Julian stepped onto the path.
Behind him were Colleen, Claire, and the police officers following closely.
Victor turned.
“How?””
Julian held up his phone.
“Because Meredith wasn’t alone.””
Victor’s expression changed.
The arrogance disappeared.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Minutes later, it was over.
The truth came out.
Victor had manipulated accounts, framed Adrian, and used the family’s secrets to control everyone around him.
The crash had been an accident.
But everything after it had been a plan.
A plan to erase Adrian’s evidence.
A plan to make me look guilty.
A plan that failed because Adrian knew me better than anyone.
Six months later, I returned to the botanical garden.
Not for answers.
Not for revenge.
Just to remember.
I was standing beside the same flowers where Adrian proposed when I noticed something new.
A small plaque near the garden entrance.
It was dedicated to a flower collection.
The Adrian Parker Memorial Garden.
I smiled through my tears.
Because Adrian always loved flowers.
Not because they were beautiful.
Because they were proof that something could be broken, buried, and still grow again.
I placed a bouquet on the bench.
White roses.
Lavender.
The same flowers I had chosen for a wedding that never happened.
Then I noticed a small envelope beneath the bench.
My name was written on it.
Adrian’s handwriting.
Again.
Inside was one final note.
Meredith,
If you found this, then you did exactly what I knew you would do.
You searched.
You questioned.
You fought.
I’m sorry I couldn’t stand beside you.
But I need you to know something.
Our wedding day was never the most important day of my life.
This was.
Every ordinary morning.
Every stupid argument.
Every late-night conversation.
Every moment with you.
That was my forever.
Don’t spend your life trying to find the person who took me away.
Spend it becoming the person I loved.
I folded the letter carefully.
And for the first time in months, I didn’t feel like I was saying goodbye.
I felt like I was moving forward.
Because Adrian’s last gift wasn’t the truth.
It wasn’t revenge.
It wasn’t justice.
It was the reminder that even after someone leaves…
May you like
love can still remain.
And sometimes, the person who loses everything is the person who finally discovers what was real all along.
