Chapter 4: The Night Adrian Disappeared

I stared at the photo until my eyes started burning.

Because my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

Adrian.

Alive.

Standing in the parking garage of Parker Financial.

And beside him…

His mother.

Colleen.

Not crying.

Not saying goodbye.

Arguing.

The woman who held my hand at his funeral.

The woman who told me she would always be family.

The woman who had looked at me three months later like I was a threat.

She had been the last person with Adrian before he died.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“No.””

The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.

Julian looked at my face.

He knew.

He knew what I had seen.

“Meredith.””

I looked up.

“Did you know?””

His expression changed.

“Know what?””

I laughed once.

A sharp, empty sound.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend.””

The garden suddenly felt too small.

The wedding guests were only a few yards away, celebrating, drinking champagne, taking pictures.

They had no idea that the family they were celebrating was falling apart behind a door.

“Why was your mother with Adrian that night?”” I asked.

Julian said nothing.

That silence was my answer.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

“Meredith, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped away from him.

“For three months, I thought I lost Adrian because of a random accident.””

“Because that’s what happened.””

“Then why does he have a letter saying otherwise?””

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Because Adrian was paranoid.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“Paranoid?””

“Yes.””

“You’re calling my fiancé paranoid?””

“I’m saying Adrian had a habit of assuming the worst when he didn’t understand something.””

I stared at him.

“That’s not true.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I knew him.””

Julian looked away.

“No. You knew the version of him he showed you.””

That sentence hurt.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it sounded like something someone says when they are trying to make you doubt your own memories.

I thought of Adrian’s smile.

His voice.

The way he touched my hand whenever we crossed a street.

Was all of that real?

Or was there a part of him I never knew?

Before I could answer, Colleen appeared behind Julian.

Her face was pale.

“Julian.””

He turned.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not grief.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Meredith, please.””

I held up my phone.

“Tell me why you were with Adrian that night.””

Colleen closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked much older.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around.

“This is not the place.””

“Funny.””

My voice shook.

“You didn’t think that when you let me bury him without knowing?””

Julian stepped forward.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, it’s not enough.””

People inside the ballroom began looking toward us.

I didn’t care.

“You both knew something.””

Colleen whispered:

“Meredith.””

“You watched me mourn him.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I loved Adrian.””

“Then why did you lie to me?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than any answer.

Because silence was a choice.

I grabbed my flower tools from the table near the door.

“I’m leaving.””

Julian’s expression changed.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Because for the first time, I wanted him to stop me.

I wanted him to say something that made sense.

I wanted him to be the brother Adrian loved.

Instead, he said:

“Because if you leave now, you’ll believe the wrong person.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Julian looked at Elena.

She immediately looked away.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You think Elena is lying?””

Julian didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I walked toward Elena.

“Is there something else you didn’t tell me?””

She looked guilty.

“Meredith…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not another secret.””

She swallowed.

“There is something.””

Of course there was.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

“What?””

Elena looked at Julian and Colleen.

Then lowered her voice.

“Adrian wasn’t investigating his family.””

My heart stopped.

“He was investigating the company.””

“What company?””

“Parker Financial.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because money was missing.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Julian.

He looked away.

“How much?””

Elena hesitated.

“Nearly two million dollars.””

The number made my stomach twist.

“No.””

“I saw the records.””

“Adrian would have told me.””

“He wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Elena’s eyes softened.

“Because he was trying to protect you.””

I looked down at the letter.

The words suddenly felt heavier.

I was trying to protect you.

I had read those words.

But I thought they were about emotional pain.

Not danger.

Not betrayal.

Not murder.

I hated that my mind even went there.

“Murder?””

Nobody spoke.

But everyone reacted.

Colleen looked terrified.

Julian looked angry.

Elena looked sad.

And that told me everything.

They had all thought it.

Even if they never said it.

I stepped closer to Julian.

“Did you kill my fiancé?””

The question was quiet.

But it changed the entire atmosphere.

Julian stared at me.

Then his face hardened.

“No.””

I searched his eyes.

I had spent years around him.

I knew his expressions.

I knew his voice.

But now I couldn’t tell what was real anymore.

“Then help me understand.””

He looked exhausted.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what Adrian found.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at his mother.

That small movement told me more than words could.

Colleen shook her head.

“Julian.””

“Mom, she deserves to know.””

My heart pounded.

Finally.

Finally someone was going to tell me.

Julian took a breath.

“Adrian found out the missing money wasn’t taken from the company.””

“Then where was it taken from?””

He looked at me.

“From an account created in his name.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He was being set up.””

The world became quiet.

“Who?””

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

And that terrified me.

Because I knew.

I knew before he spoke.

“It looked like Adrian stole the money.””

My mouth went dry.

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Julian looked toward his mother.

Colleen whispered:

“Meredith…”

The sound of my name from her lips almost broke me.

Because I remembered her at my funeral.

I remembered her crying.

I remembered believing she was the only person who understood my pain.

Then she said:

“Adrian was going to expose me.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Everything stopped.

The flowers.

The wedding.

The music.

The entire world.

“What?””

Colleen’s tears fell.

“I never wanted him hurt.””

Julian immediately turned toward her.

“Mom.””

She shook her head.

“He was my son.””

“Then why were you there?””

Her face collapsed.

And for the first time, I saw the truth.

Not the whole truth.

But enough.

“Because I was begging him.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For forgiveness.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Colleen wiped her tears.

“Because the night Adrian died…”

Her voice broke.

“I was the one who told him to leave.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the ground.

“It means if I had kept my mouth shut, he would still be alive.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then a loud crash came from inside the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

A guest screamed.

I looked through the glass doors.

A man was standing beside the gift table.

Holding a small box.

My name was written on it.

The man looked directly at me.

Then he shouted:

“Meredith Collins?””

My blood ran cold.

“Yes?””

He lifted the box.

“This belonged to Adrian Parker.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Then he added:

“And he left instructions that you were only supposed to open it after you learned who betrayed him.””
