Chapter 5: The Box Under the Table

Nobody moved.

Not the guests.

Not the musicians.

Not even the bride.

The entire wedding reception froze around one sentence.

He left instructions that you were only supposed to open it after you learned who betrayed him.

I stared at the stranger standing beside the gift table.

He looked uncomfortable, like he had walked into a room where he knew he didn’t belong.

The small wooden box in his hands suddenly felt heavier than it looked.

My name was written on the top.

Meredith Collins.

Adrian’s handwriting.

Again.

My heart started racing.

“Who are you?”” Julian demanded.

The man looked at him.

“My name is Daniel Hayes.””

Julian’s face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

“You know him?”” I asked.

Julian didn’t answer.

Daniel looked between us.

“I knew Adrian.””

“When?”” I asked.

“Before the accident.””

The word made my stomach twist.

Accident.

Everyone kept using that word.

Like it explained everything.

Like it erased the possibility that someone had made a choice.

I stepped forward.

“Give me the box.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he handed it to me.

It was small enough to fit in both my hands.

But holding it felt like holding a piece of Adrian’s final days.

I ran my fingers over the lid.

There was a tiny metal lock.

Locked.

I looked at Daniel.

“How do I open it?””

He glanced at Colleen.

Then at Julian.

“Adrian told me you would know.””

I frowned.

“I would know?””

Daniel nodded.

“He said you were the only person who would understand why he locked it.””

That made no sense.

I looked at the box again.

A memory surfaced.

A silly one.

A moment I hadn’t thought about in months.

Adrian and I were sitting on the floor of our apartment surrounded by wedding decorations.

I had been trying to organize everything.

Flowers.

Guest lists.

Music.

Menus.

He had been distracting me by opening random drawers and finding old things.

At one point, he found a tiny wooden box I kept on my bookshelf.

“What’s this?”” he asked.

I grabbed it from him.

“Nothing.””

He smiled.

“Interesting.””

“It’s just something my grandmother gave me.””

“Does it have a secret?””

“No.””

“Then why are you hiding it?””

I laughed.

“Because not everything needs a reason.””

He had looked at me for a long moment.

Then said:

“That’s what I love about you.””

I had rolled my eyes.

“What?””

“You still believe some things can just be simple.””

At the time, I thought he was being romantic.

Now I wondered if he was trying to tell me something.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“You remembered something.””

I looked up.

“How did you know?””

“Because Adrian told me you would.””

I tightened my grip on the box.

“What exactly did Adrian tell you?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“He said if anything happened to him, you would need proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence again.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had pieces.

And I was the only person who didn’t know the whole story.

I turned toward Julian.

“Did you know about this?””

His expression was unreadable.

“No.””

I studied him.

“You’re lying.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I’m not.””

“You recognized Daniel.””

“I recognized his name.””

“Why?””

Julian looked away.

“Because Adrian mentioned him.””

“What did he say?””

Julian didn’t respond.

I stepped closer.

“What did Adrian say?””

Colleen spoke softly.

“Meredith.””

I looked at her.

“Not now.””

Her face fell.

I hated that part of me still cared.

I hated that after everything, I still saw the woman who cried at her son’s funeral.

But grief didn’t disappear just because someone hurt you.

Sometimes it made things harder.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Maybe we should do this somewhere private.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I held the box against my chest.

“I’m tired of private conversations.””

My voice shook.

“I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.””

I looked at Julian.

“At the funeral, everyone told me Adrian was gone.””

I looked at Colleen.

“They held my hand.””

Then I looked at Claire.

“She cried beside me.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“And all of you knew something.””

Nobody denied it.

That hurt the most.

I took a breath.

“Open the box.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

“Meredith—”

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“At least everyone can hear the truth at the same time.””

Julian stepped forward.

“You don’t know what’s inside.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I know what’s outside.””

“What?””

“Lies.””

The room went completely silent.

Daniel slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small key.

My heart jumped.

“You had the key?””

He nodded.

“Adrian gave it to me.””

I stared.

“When?””

“The day before he died.””

The words hit like a wave.

The day before.

He was alive.

He was planning.

He was fighting something.

And I had been at home choosing cake flavors.

Thinking our biggest problem was whether chocolate frosting was too childish for a wedding.

Daniel unlocked the box.

The click echoed.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A folded document.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

My hands went cold.

It was Adrian.

But not the Adrian I remembered.

This Adrian looked exhausted.

Serious.

He was sitting at a desk with papers scattered around him.

On the back of the photo were five words.

Trust Meredith.

Not them.

I swallowed.

“Why would he write this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he knew you would question yourself.””

I unfolded the document.

It was a printed email.

The sender’s name caught my attention.

Parker Financial Accounting Department.

The subject line made my heart stop.

Unauthorized Transfer Report.

I read the first few lines.

My eyes moved faster.

Then slower.

Because the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.

The missing money.

The account.

The fake records.

Someone had created a trail that made it look like Adrian was responsible.

But the final line was the one that destroyed me.

The account had been accessed using credentials belonging to:

Colleen Parker.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

Colleen looked like she might collapse.

“Meredith…”

I held up the paper.

“Is this true?””

Her lips trembled.

“I can explain.””

“Did you access the account?””

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at Julian.

And I saw him close his eyes.

Like he already knew.

That was the moment I realized something.

Julian wasn’t protecting his mother.

He was protecting the truth from me.

“Tell me,” I whispered.

Colleen sat down.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Mistakes?””

“Financial mistakes.””

“Two million dollars is not a mistake.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was desperate.””

“Why?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire stepped forward.

“Because of me.””

Everyone turned.

Claire looked terrified.

But she continued.

“My father’s company was collapsing.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She wiped her eyes.

“I asked Colleen for help.””

Julian looked at her.

“Claire, stop.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Meredith deserves to know.””

I felt the room shifting beneath me.

“What did you ask her for?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“A loan.””

“And?””

“She gave it to me.””

I looked at Colleen.

“From the company?””

Colleen didn’t answer.

“Yes,” Claire whispered.

A horrible silence followed.

Then I understood.

The missing money.

The fake account.

The investigation.

Adrian finding out.

But one question remained.

“Why would Adrian die because of this?””

Nobody answered.

Until Daniel spoke.

“Because Adrian discovered someone was trying to cover it up.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel glanced toward the entrance.

Everyone followed his eyes.

The person standing there made my blood run cold.

A man I had never seen before.

Older.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a folder.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Julian.

And he said:

“Julian, we need to talk.””

Julian’s face went pale.

The man stepped closer.

“Because Meredith just found out the wrong part of the story.””

I tightened my grip on Adrian’s letter.

“What does that mean?””

The man looked at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“Because your fiancé didn’t die while trying to expose his family.””

May you like

He paused.

“He died because he discovered who was trying to frame you.””
