Chapter 8: Adrian’s Final Recording
The phone inside the wooden box kept ringing.
Not loudly.
Not urgently.
Just enough to make everyone in the dark ballroom stop breathing.
The sound was unnatural.
Like a ghost from a life that had ended three months ago.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
The room returned in pieces.
Confused faces.
Whispering guests.
A wedding interrupted by a secret nobody was supposed to hear.
I stared down at the phone inside the box.
The screen still showed the same message.
*PLAY THIS BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE.*
My hands trembled.
Because I knew.
I knew Adrian recorded it.
I knew this was something he left behind.
Something he wanted me to hear.
But suddenly, I was afraid.
Not of the truth.
Of what the truth would take away from me.
Because every answer I found created another wound.
I pressed play.
For three seconds, there was only static.
Then his voice filled the room.
“Meredith.””
I stopped breathing.
Nobody had heard his voice since the funeral.
Not like this.
Not alive.
Not speaking directly to me.
My knees almost gave out.
“Meredith, if you’re hearing this, then I wasn’t able to explain everything myself.””
His voice was quiet.
Calm.
The same voice that used to wake me up on Sunday mornings.
The same voice that told me terrible jokes just to hear me laugh.
“I’m sorry.””
A tear slipped down my face before I could stop it.
“I know you hate when I say that without explaining.””
A tiny laugh came through the recording.
“And I know you’re probably angry right now.””
I covered my mouth.
Because he was right.
Even after death, Adrian knew me.
“But if you’re angry, that means you’re listening.””
The recording paused.
Then continued.
“I need you to understand something first. I never stopped trusting you.””
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt.
Because that was the question that had haunted me.
Why didn’t he tell me?
Why did he carry this alone?
“Meredith, I didn’t tell you because I knew what you would do.””
A small smile appeared in his voice.
“You would have jumped in front of the problem before you even knew what it was.””
Someone behind me quietly cried.
I didn’t look.
I couldn’t.
“I spent my whole life trying to protect my family.””
His voice became heavier.
“But I made a mistake.””
A pause.
“I thought protecting people meant hiding the truth from them.””
My heart tightened.
“Please don’t make the same mistake.””
The ballroom was completely silent.
“Everyone you’re about to hear from has some part of the truth.””
I looked around.
At Julian.
At Colleen.
At Claire.
At Victor.
“But nobody has all of it.””
The recording continued.
“The night I died, I wasn’t going to confront my family.””
My eyes moved to Julian.
“I was going to meet someone else.””
A chill ran through me.
Someone else.
“Someone who had been manipulating everything from the beginning.””
The phone crackled.
“I found evidence that someone was moving money through Parker Financial.””
Victor looked tense.
“But the money wasn’t the real goal.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Adrian’s voice continued.
“The money was a distraction.””
Everyone looked confused.
“The real goal was control.””
The room went quiet.
“Someone wanted my family fighting each other.””
I looked at Colleen.
At Julian.
At Claire.
And suddenly I saw it.
The pattern.
Everyone had been hiding something.
Everyone had been protecting someone.
Everyone had been blaming someone else.
“And when they realized I was close to exposing them, they needed someone else to take the blame.””
My heart dropped.
“Someone innocent.””
The recording paused.
Then Adrian said my name.
“Meredith.””
I broke.
Because hearing him say it felt too real.
“I’m sorry this happened to you.””
My tears fell freely now.
“I’m sorry I brought you into a world where people use love as a weapon.””
The words were painful.
Because Adrian never thought he was protecting me from danger.
He thought he was protecting me from the people he loved.
“I left you something in the box.””
I looked down.
The flash drive.
“The evidence is there.””
Daniel immediately looked at the box.
“But don’t open it until you know who to trust.””
My heart jumped.
“Because the evidence can be destroyed.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Adrian continued.
“There is a backup.””
I looked at the phone.
“Someone else has it.””
The recording became quieter.
“I gave that person instructions to wait until you found the first piece.””
A pause.
“Because if you’re hearing this, it means someone failed to stop you.””
The words sent a chill through me.
Failed.
Not because they didn’t try.
Because they tried.
“And Meredith…”
His voice softened.
“There’s something else.””
I wiped my face.
“What?””
“He wasn’t trying to frame you.””
The room went still.
“He was trying to make it look like you had a reason to disappear.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian’s recording continued.
“If I’m right, the person behind this doesn’t want you blamed.””
A pause.
“They want you gone.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Nobody spoke.
“I need you to remember one thing.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“Trust the person who brings you the truth, even if it hurts.””
A pause.
“And be careful of the person who gives you comfort without answers.””
The recording ended.
The ballroom remained silent.
Then everyone started talking at once.
Guests whispered.
Someone asked what was happening.
The coordinator tried to control the room.
But I heard none of it.
Because one sentence was stuck in my mind.
Be careful of the person who gives you comfort without answers.
I looked toward Colleen.
She looked devastated.
Then toward Claire.
She looked terrified.
Then Julian.
He looked broken.
Who had comforted me?
Who had held my hand?
Who had let me believe I knew the truth?
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
I opened it.
*You finally heard him. Good. Now ask Julian why he lied about the last thing Adrian said.*
My eyes moved to Julian.
He saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I turned the phone toward him.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know this number?””
I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Julian.””
His silence was enough.
“You do.””
He looked away.
“I’ve seen it before.””
“Where?””
He swallowed.
“On Adrian’s phone.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“The night before he died.””
I stepped closer.
“What was the message?””
Julian looked at me.
And I saw the hesitation.
The same hesitation everyone had.
The same hesitation that had destroyed me.
“Tell me.””
He looked at Colleen.
She whispered:
“Julian, don’t.””
I turned.
“Why are you telling him not to?””
Nobody answered.
Then Julian finally spoke.
“Because the last message Adrian received wasn’t from the person we thought.””
“Who was it from?””
Julian closed his eyes.
“Meredith…”
“Who?””
He opened his eyes.
And the fear I saw there was different.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of what I would feel.
“It was from you.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Adrian received a message from your phone.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I never sent him anything.””
Julian nodded.
“I know.””
“Then someone used my phone.””
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
Julian looked at me.
“Because they wanted Adrian to believe you were the person betraying him.””
The room became silent again.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, it wasn’t a warning.
It was a photo.
A security image.
A woman standing outside my apartment building the night before Adrian died.
A woman holding my phone.
A woman looking directly at the camera.
I stared.
Because I knew her.
Everyone knew her.
She had comforted me when Adrian died.
She had cried with me.
She had told me she understood my pain.
And now her face was on the screen.
May you like
The woman who had been secretly using my phone was…
Colleen Parker.
