Chapter 9: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.

*I know where your daughter is going.*

Six words.

A threat.

A warning.

Or both.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Ryan noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

Then at my father.

“I got a message.””

My father stood.

“From who?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read it once.

Then again.

His expression changed.

“Show the investigators.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“Who sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

The number was unfamiliar.

No name.

No profile picture.

Nothing.

Just a blank screen and a sentence that made my entire body tense.

My father picked up his phone.

“Don’t respond.””

I nodded.

But inside, I already knew.

Whoever sent this knew about my baby.

They knew enough to scare me.

And they wanted me to know they were watching.

The investigators arrived twenty minutes later.

They traced the number.

Or tried to.

But whoever sent the message had covered their tracks.

“This was routed through several systems,” the investigator explained.

My father frowned.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning whoever sent it knew what they were doing.””

I looked at the investigator.

“Could it be Melissa?””

He shook his head.

“She’s in custody.””

“Daniel?””

“Possible, but unlikely.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew the answer.

The person from the photograph.

Ryan’s half-brother.

The man whose existence had been hidden from me.

And apparently from almost everyone else.

Ryan sat down slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“My brother.””

The word sounded strange.

“My father never talked about another child.””

The investigator placed the photo on the table.

“His name is Ethan Carter.””

Ryan stared at the picture.

“How old is he?””

“Thirty-five.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

Ryan looked confused.

“Because my father told me he only had one child.””

My father looked at him.

“People lie.””

Ryan swallowed.

“What do we know about him?””

The investigator opened a folder.

“Ethan was raised by his mother after Daniel Carter left.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“Left?””

“Yes.””

“For another family?””

The investigator nodded.

“For Evelyn.””

Silence.

The pieces began connecting.

The hidden child.

The resentment.

The family obsession.

The need to prove something.

My father continued reading.

“Ethan spent years believing Daniel abandoned him.””

I looked at the photo.

“And now?””

The investigator looked at me.

“Now he believes the Bennett family owes him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

The investigator hesitated.

“Because Ethan believes Ryan was given the life that should have been his.””

Ryan looked sick.

“He blames me?””

“Yes.””

“For something I didn’t even know happened?””

“Yes.””

I leaned back against the pillow.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Melissa’s anger.

Daniel’s involvement.

The obsession with my family.

They weren’t just trying to get money.

They were trying to rewrite their own story.

They wanted Ryan to lose what they believed he stole.

Even though he never stole anything.

That afternoon, Ryan called his father.

Nobody expected him to answer.

But he did.

“Ryan.””

The voice on the speaker sounded tired.

Ryan’s face hardened.

“Did you know?””

A pause.

“Know what?””

“About Ethan.””

Silence.

That was the answer.

Ryan closed his eyes.

“You knew.””

Daniel sighed.

“Ryan—”

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You let me believe I was your only child.””

“Things were complicated.””

“Complicated?””

Ryan stood.

“You had another son.””

“Ryan.””

“And he was helping Melissa destroy my wife.””

Daniel said nothing.

The silence became unbearable.

My father took the phone.

“Daniel Carter.””

The voice on the other end changed.

Fear.

“General Bennett.””

“You involved my daughter in your family’s problems.””

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“But you allowed it.””

Daniel had no response.

“Where is Ethan?””

Another silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.””

My father looked at the investigator.

The investigator immediately signaled.

The call was being recorded.

My father continued.

“Daniel, this is your final chance.””

A shaky breath.

“He’s angry.””

“That isn’t an answer.””

“He thinks Ryan ruined his life.””

Ryan looked away.

“He did nothing.””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“I know.””

The call ended.

But it gave us something.

Confirmation.

Ethan was involved.

That evening, I finally met the man who had been hiding behind everyone else.

Not in person.

Through a video call.

The investigators had found an account connected to him.

His face appeared on the screen.

He looked nothing like Ryan.

That surprised me.

I expected some resemblance.

Some family connection.

There was none.

Only bitterness.

He stared at the camera.

Then at me.

“So.””

His voice was calm.

“You’re Claire.””

I didn’t answer.

He smiled slightly.

“I expected someone different.””

“Different how?””

“Less impressive.””

I felt my anger rise.

But I stayed calm.

Years in the Army taught me something.

The loudest person in the room usually had the least control.

“Why are you doing this?””

Ethan leaned back.

“Doing what?””

“Trying to destroy my family.””

He laughed quietly.

“Your family?””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“You mean the family that never knew I existed?””

I stayed silent.

He continued.

“My father built everything for Ryan.””

“That wasn’t Ryan’s fault.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“It was mine.””

The words surprised me.

“You blame yourself?””

“I blame everyone.””

I looked at him.

“That doesn’t justify hurting innocent people.””

He smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You think this is about money.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He leaned closer.

“This is about taking back what was stolen.””

“What was stolen?””

He answered immediately.

“Everything.””

I shook my head.

“You’re hurting people who had nothing to do with your father’s choices.””

His expression changed.

Almost like he understood.

But then it disappeared.

“Your daughter will grow up knowing the truth.””

I froze.

“What?””

“That families have consequences.””

The investigator immediately moved closer.

The call was being recorded.

“Where is the child going?”” he asked.

Ethan smiled.

“I think you know.””

The screen flickered.

Then froze.

The call ended.

Everyone rushed to trace it.

Minutes passed.

Then the investigator looked up.

“We have a location.””

My father stood.

“Where?””

The investigator hesitated.

That scared me.

“Say it.””

He looked at me.

“The location is connected to Ryan.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

The investigator turned the screen around.

An address appeared.

A place I recognized.

Ryan’s old family property.

The house where his parents had raised him.

Ryan went pale.

“That house has been empty for years.””

The investigator shook his head.

“Not anymore.””

My father grabbed his coat.

“We go now.””

Ryan stood.

“I’m coming.””

My father looked at him.

“No.””

Ryan stared.

“That’s my family.””

My father’s expression softened slightly.

“And Claire is your wife.””

Ryan looked at me.

“I’m not leaving her again.””

The words hit harder than he knew.

Because that was the thing I had needed from him all along.

Not perfection.

Not strength.

Just choosing me.

The investigators prepared to leave.

Before they took me for additional protection, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time from the same unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*You’re too late.*

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

My breath disappeared.

It was a picture of a nursery.

A crib.

A blanket.

A room prepared for a baby.

And on the wall above the crib was a handwritten sign.

Three words.

*Welcome home, daughter.*

Ryan looked at the picture.

Then whispered:

“That’s our baby’s room.””

My father looked at the screen.

His face became completely cold.

Because beneath the photo was a timestamp.

Taken less than one hour ago.

May you like

And the location tag revealed something impossible.

The picture had been taken from inside the hospital.
