Chapter 5: The Plan Hidden Behind a Smile
The words followed me into my dreams.
*She was trying to make sure you never came home.*
Even after everyone left the room.
Even after the doctors adjusted my medication.
Even after Ryan sat beside me in silence for almost an hour.
Those words remained.
They were heavier than the cold.
Heavier than the pain.
Because a part of me had still been trying to understand Melissa’s actions as something smaller.
Something cruel.
Something reckless.
But not something intentional.
Not something that could have taken my life.
And now I knew.
She had planned it.
The next morning, my father was standing by the window when I woke up.
He had not slept.
I knew because my father had always had a certain look when he was exhausted.
When I was a child, I saw it after long deployments.
When I became an officer, I saw it after difficult missions.
But I had never seen it because of me.
“Dad.””
He turned immediately.
“You’re awake.””
I nodded.
“What happened with the paper?””
His expression hardened.
“Investigators are analyzing it.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
My father looked at me.
Then he walked toward the bed.
“You deserve the truth.””
I waited.
He sat down beside me.
“The paper was a list.””
My stomach tightened.
“A list of what?””
He looked away for a moment.
“A list of things Melissa wanted to accomplish.””
The room felt colder.
“What things?””
My father took a breath.
“She wrote that she wanted you embarrassed.””
I almost laughed.
Embarrassed.
After everything.
That was how it started.
My father continued.
“She wanted Ryan to see you as difficult. She wanted his family to believe you were controlling.””
I looked down.
That sounded exactly like Melissa.
Create a story.
Repeat it enough.
Eventually people believed it.
“But that wasn’t the worst part.””
I looked at him.
“What was?””
His jaw tightened.
“She wrote that if something happened to you, people would blame your pregnancy.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“She planned to make it look like you were already having complications.””
Silence.
A terrible, empty silence.
Because that was the part that scared me.
Melissa wasn’t just angry.
She was calculating.
She knew exactly how people would react.
She knew how to create doubt.
“She thought nobody would believe me,” I whispered.
My father’s face softened.
“She thought nobody knew who you really were.””
I looked at him.
“That was my choice.””
“I know.””
“I didn’t want people treating me differently because of you.””
My father nodded.
“I know, Claire.””
His voice became quieter.
“But there’s a difference between being humble and allowing people to underestimate you.””
I looked away.
Because he was right.
I had spent years hiding the parts of myself that made other people uncomfortable.
My rank.
My accomplishments.
My family.
I had done it because I wanted to be accepted.
But Melissa had used that against me.
A knock came at the door.
Ryan stepped inside.
He looked worse than yesterday.
He held two cups of coffee.
He stopped when he saw my father.
“I can leave.””
My father looked at me.
The decision was mine.
I nodded.
“Stay.””
Ryan slowly entered.
He handed me one of the cups.
“I remembered you like it with extra cream.””
I looked at the coffee.
A small thing.
A normal thing.
And somehow it hurt.
Because I remembered all the normal things.
The mornings.
The jokes.
The plans for our daughter.
The life I thought we were building.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
“I need to ask you something.””
“Anything.””
“Did Melissa ever talk badly about me when I wasn’t around?””
His face changed.
Not because he didn’t know.
Because he knew.
“Sometimes.””
“How many times?””
He looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Try.””
Ryan swallowed.
“A lot.””
The honesty surprised me.
Maybe because he finally stopped trying to protect everyone except me.
“What did she say?””
He hesitated.
“Things like you were too serious.””
I waited.
“That you cared more about your career than family.””
My jaw tightened.
“Anything else?””
Ryan looked miserable.
“She said you thought you were better than everyone.””
I nodded slowly.
“And what did you say?””
He was quiet.
That was answer enough.
“You said nothing.””
“I told her she was being unfair.””
“Once?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
That was the pattern.
He didn’t agree with Melissa.
But he never stopped her.
And sometimes silence was permission.
“I’m sorry.””
I opened my eyes.
“I know.””
“I mean it.””
“I believe you.””
His expression changed.
Like he expected forgiveness immediately.
But I continued.
“That doesn’t mean everything goes back to normal.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
For once, he didn’t argue.
“I know I failed you.””
The words were quiet.
But they mattered.
Not enough.
But they mattered.
The door opened again.
This time, an investigator entered.
“Colonel Bennett.””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“We have more information.””
My father stood.
“What did you find?””
The investigator looked at Ryan.
“We confirmed Melissa had access to Mr. Bennett’s accounts.””
Ryan nodded.
“And?””
The investigator held a file.
“She also deleted certain messages.””
“Which ones?””
“Messages between her and another person.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
The investigator looked at me.
“We identified the person.””
Everyone became still.
“Who?””
The investigator placed the file on the table.
“It wasn’t just Melissa.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Who was helping her?””
The investigator opened the folder.
“Someone inside the family.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Inside the family?””
The investigator nodded.
“The messages were not only with Melissa.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Who else?””
The investigator pulled out a printed screenshot.
“This number belongs to…”
He stopped.
Then looked directly at Ryan.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Ryan stared.
“My dad?””
The investigator nodded.
“Daniel Carter has been communicating with Melissa about Claire for months.””
I felt my heartbeat slow.
Because somehow, deep down, I wasn’t surprised.
The comments.
The looks.
The subtle disrespect.
It had always felt like more than one person.
Ryan stepped back.
“No.””
The investigator looked at him.
“We found messages discussing your marriage.””
Ryan shook his head.
“My father would never—”
Then he stopped.
Because he remembered.
All the times his father stayed silent.
All the times his family laughed.
All the times I was made to feel like an outsider.
My father looked at me.
“Claire.””
I looked at the investigator.
“What did they plan?””
The investigator hesitated.
Then he answered.
“They wanted Ryan to leave you.””
The words hit harder than expected.
Ryan looked devastated.
“Leave?””
The investigator nodded.
“They believed once you became isolated, you would have nowhere to go.””
I stared at him.
“But why?””
The investigator looked at the file.
“Because they wanted something from you.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What?””
The investigator looked at me.
“Your father’s name.””
I froze.
“What?””
He continued.
“They believed your military connections and inheritance would benefit Ryan’s family.””
Ryan looked sick.
“My family?””
The investigator nodded.
“They thought if Ryan divorced you after the baby was born, he would still have access to your family’s influence.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
All those years.
All those insults.
All those moments where I questioned myself.
It wasn’t because they hated me.
Not completely.
They wanted something.
My father looked at Ryan.
“Did you know about any of this?””
Ryan looked horrified.
“No.””
The investigator watched him carefully.
“We believe you were not aware.””
For some reason, that hurt more.
Because Ryan wasn’t the mastermind.
He was just the person who let everyone else stand too close.
The investigator picked up another document.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He placed the paper down.
“This was found in Melissa’s house.””
I read the first line.
And my blood ran cold.
Because it wasn’t a message.
It was a letter.
A letter written before Thanksgiving.
A letter explaining exactly what Melissa planned to do after I was gone.
And at the bottom of the page was one sentence.
A sentence that made Ryan whisper:
“She was going to take my daughter.””
I looked at the final line.
May you like
And my entire body went numb.
*After Claire is gone, the baby will belong to this family.*
