Chapter 8: The Voice That Exposed Them All
The recording played again.
And somehow, hearing Melissa’s voice was worse than reading the messages.
Words on paper could be explained away.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
A bad choice.
But a voice?
A voice carried intention.
It carried emotion.
It carried the truth people tried to hide.
The hospital room was silent as Melissa’s own words filled the air.
“Once Claire is gone, Ryan won’t have a choice.””
Ryan went completely still.
I looked at him.
His face had lost all color.
The investigator continued playing the recording.
Melissa’s voice came through clearly.
“She’s the only thing standing between us and what we deserve.””
A pause.
Then another voice answered.
A man.
Daniel Carter.
Melissa’s father.
“You’re sure this will work?””
My stomach tightened.
The recording continued.
Melissa laughed softly.
“She trusts Ryan too much.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that sentence hurt in a way I didn’t expect.
Not because it was true.
Because it revealed how carefully she had studied me.
She knew my kindness.
She knew my patience.
She knew my belief that the people I loved would protect me.
And she used all of it against me.
Daniel’s voice came again.
“What if something goes wrong?””
Melissa answered immediately.
“Nothing will.””
The confidence in her voice was terrifying.
“She always tries to be strong. She won’t admit she needs help.””
My father’s hands curled into fists.
“She knew,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“She knew exactly who I was.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
Melissa’s voice continued.
“And when the baby comes, Ryan will see everything differently.””
A pause.
“He’ll realize Claire was never the person he needed.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
A tear moved down his face.
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Melissa broke the silence.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I understand perfectly.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
“You think I wanted this?””
I stared at her.
“You planned it.””
“I wanted a chance.””
“A chance to what?””
She looked toward Ryan.
“To fix my family.””
Ryan laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Your family?””
Melissa looked at him.
“Yes.””
He shook his head.
“You almost killed my wife.””
She flinched.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You locked her outside.””
“I thought someone would find her.””
“You watched her beg.””
“I was angry.””
“You knew she was pregnant.””
“I knew.””
The answer came too quickly.
Everyone heard it.
Everyone understood.
Ryan stepped back.
“You knew.””
Melissa looked away.
And that was the moment something inside him broke.
Not his anger.
Not his trust in her.
Something deeper.
The last piece of the person he thought she was.
“My sister knew my wife could die.””
Melissa’s voice became defensive.
“She’s not dead.””
The room went silent.
Even she seemed to realize what she had said.
My father looked at her with complete disgust.
The investigator immediately stepped forward.
“Melissa Carter, you need to be careful with your statements.””
But she wasn’t listening.
She was looking at me.
“You always had to be the victim.””
I stared at her.
“Victim?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“Everyone feels sorry for you.””
My chest tightened.
“You trapped me on a freezing balcony.””
“And now everyone thinks I’m a monster.””
The anger in her voice was almost unbelievable.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Anger.
Because she wasn’t upset that she hurt me.
She was upset that people finally saw her.
“You are a monster,” Ryan said quietly.
Melissa looked at him.
And something in her face changed.
Because that was the one opinion she cared about.
His.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t mean that.””
Ryan looked at her.
“I do.””
The room became still.
“You’re my sister.””
Melissa’s eyes filled.
“You can’t just throw me away.””
Ryan’s expression was broken.
“I didn’t throw you away.””
He pointed toward me.
“You did this.””
For the first time, Melissa had no answer.
The investigators took her away.
But the damage she caused remained.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
The baby moved occasionally, reminding me she was still there.
Still fighting.
Still holding on.
I stared at the ceiling.
Ryan sat in the chair beside the bed.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Finally, he said:
“I’m going to ask you something.””
I turned my head.
“What?””
“Do you hate me?””
The question surprised me.
I looked at him.
“No.””
His eyes lowered.
“Maybe you should.””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
I didn’t hate Ryan.
Hate was easy.
This was harder.
“I love you,” he whispered.
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“But?””
I looked at him.
“But love isn’t enough.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“I needed you before my father came.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“I needed you when Melissa insulted me.””
“I know.””
“I needed you when I was standing outside that door.””
His face broke.
“I know.””
The silence between us was painful.
But it was honest.
And honesty was something we had been missing.
The next morning, my doctor came in with unexpected news.
“The contractions have reduced significantly.””
I smiled.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
I placed a hand over my stomach.
My daughter was stronger than everyone who tried to hurt us.
The doctor smiled.
“She’s doing very well.””
After she left, my father walked in.
He looked tired.
But calmer.
“What happened?””
He sat down.
“The investigation expanded.””
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“And Melissa?””
“Yes.””
I waited.
My father hesitated.
That worried me.
“What?””
“They found something else.””
I sighed.
“What now?””
He handed me a folder.
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Accounts.
Documents.
I looked through them.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“This is why they were so desperate.””
I looked at the numbers.
“I don’t understand.””
“They weren’t just trying to access your family connections.””
“Then what?””
He pointed to a line.
A company name.
A company connected to Ryan.
My heartbeat changed.
“What does this mean?””
My father looked at me.
“Ryan’s family wasn’t planning to leave him.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“They were planning to replace him.””
The room felt colder.
“Replace him with who?””
My father was silent.
Then he answered.
“Someone who would give them more power.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
He handed me another page.
A photograph was attached.
A man I had never seen before.
Underneath his picture was a name.
And when I read it, my blood ran cold.
Because it was the same name I had seen hidden in Melissa’s deleted messages.
The person she had been communicating with.
The person who had been funding everything.
The person who had been waiting for me to disappear.
My father looked at me.
“Claire…”
I looked at the photo.
“Who is he?””
My father’s voice became quiet.
“He’s the reason this started.””
I swallowed.
“Tell me.””
My father looked at the name.
Then said:
“He’s your husband’s half-brother.””
I stared.
Ryan’s half-brother.
A man I had never heard of.
A man connected to Melissa.
A man who had been secretly working against us.
And then my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then a message appeared.
One sentence.
May you like
Six words.
*I know where your daughter is going.*
