Chapter 4: The Messages Hidden in My Husband’s Phone

The room stopped breathing.

At least that was what it felt like.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The investigator’s words stayed suspended in the air.

*The messages were with someone saved under the name… Claire’s Husband.*

I looked at Ryan.

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not annoyance.

Fear.

“Ryan,” I whispered.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Too desperate.

My father noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The investigator remained standing near the door, holding the folder.

“I’m not saying you were involved, Mr. Bennett. We need to verify the identity of the account.””

Ryan stood.

“Give me the phone.””

The investigator didn’t move.

“Mr. Bennett—”

“I said give me the phone.””

My father stepped between them.

“Ryan.””

One word.

But it carried the weight of a command.

Ryan froze.

My father looked at him carefully.

“Let them do their job.””

Ryan looked away.

“I didn’t do this.””

Nobody answered.

Because the question was no longer whether Ryan had locked me outside.

He hadn’t.

The question was whether he had helped someone else do it.

And that possibility hurt in a completely different way.

The investigator placed the folder on the table.

“We recovered the messages from Melissa Carter’s device.””

He opened it.

“The contact name was edited. We don’t know when.””

My stomach tightened.

“Edited?””

“Yes.””

“So someone changed the name?””

The investigator nodded.

“Possibly.””

My father looked at the papers.

“What do the messages say?””

The investigator hesitated.

Then he began reading.

“Melissa wrote: ‘She needs to learn she can’t control everything.’”

My hands tightened around the blanket.

Another message.

“‘Ryan won’t stop me. He never does.’”

Ryan closed his eyes.

The words hurt him.

I could see that.

But I couldn’t tell if he was hurt because they were lies…

or because they were true.

The investigator continued.

“Then the other person replied: ‘Don’t make it obvious.’”

A silence filled the room.

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Continue.””

“Melissa replied: ‘Relax. She thinks everyone loves her too much to hurt her.’”

My chest felt heavy.

Because that was the part that hurt most.

Not the cruelty.

Not even the betrayal.

It was the confidence.

Melissa knew she could hurt me.

Because she believed nobody would stop her.

The investigator turned another page.

“There are more.””

Ryan looked at him.

“Read them.””

The investigator looked at me.

I nodded.

“Go ahead.””

He continued.

“The other person wrote: ‘Make sure she doesn’t call anyone.’”

A cold shiver moved through me.

My father’s expression changed.

That wasn’t a joke.

That wasn’t an accident.

That was planning.

Then came the next line.

“Melissa replied: ‘The balcony door locks from outside.’”

Ryan made a sound like he had been punched.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Ryan.””

He shook his head.

“No. I didn’t know.””

The investigator looked at him.

“We need access to your phone.””

Ryan didn’t answer.

My father looked at him.

“Ryan.””

Slowly, Ryan reached into his pocket.

His hand was shaking.

He handed over his phone.

I watched him do it.

And something inside me broke.

Because even if he had nothing to hide, the fact that I had to watch someone search my husband’s phone after almost losing our baby felt unbearable.

The investigator stepped outside.

The room became quiet again.

Evelyn sat in the corner, crying silently.

My father stood beside me.

Ryan stood across from me.

A man I loved.

A man I no longer completely understood.

Finally, he spoke.

“Claire.””

I didn’t look at him.

“I swear to you.””

I stared at the window.

“I swear I had nothing to do with this.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Melissa think she could do whatever she wanted?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Because for years, Ryan had taught her there were no consequences.

Every insult.

Every cruel joke.

Every comment.

He had allowed them all.

“She knew you would protect her,” I said.

Ryan looked down.

“I thought she was just mean.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“She was testing how much she could get away with.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“No, Ryan. You know now.””

The words hurt him.

But I needed him to hear them.

A few minutes later, the investigator returned.

His expression had changed.

That was never a good sign.

“What did you find?”” my father asked.

The investigator looked at Ryan.

“Mr. Bennett, can you tell me why Melissa Carter had access to your phone?””

Ryan frowned.

“She didn’t.””

The investigator held up the device.

“She did.””

My heart stopped.

Ryan stared.

“What?””

“There were deleted conversations.””

Ryan went pale.

“What conversations?””

The investigator looked at me.

“Between you and Melissa.””

Ryan looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

The investigator unlocked the phone.

“She used your account.””

“How?””

“She had access to your cloud backup.””

Ryan’s face changed.

Then suddenly, something clicked.

“My old tablet.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Ryan swallowed.

“Melissa used to borrow my tablet when hers broke.””

The investigator nodded.

“When was this?””

“Months ago.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Months ago?””

Ryan looked sick.

“I forgot she had it.””

The investigator continued.

“She didn’t just have access. She had been monitoring messages.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What kind of messages?””

The investigator looked at the folder.

“Mostly family conversations.””

Then he paused.

“But there’s something else.””

My father stepped forward.

“What?””

The investigator looked at me.

“She had access to information about your pregnancy.””

My stomach dropped.

“What information?””

“Your medical appointments.””

The room went silent.

Ryan whispered:

“No.””

The investigator continued.

“Your due date. Your doctor’s schedule. Your concerns about complications.””

I felt sick.

Melissa hadn’t just been cruel.

She had been watching.

Planning.

Learning.

“How?”” I whispered.

The investigator looked at Ryan.

“She had access through your shared accounts.””

Ryan looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

Again.

Those words.

I didn’t know.

I closed my eyes.

Because that was the sentence that had almost destroyed me.

The investigator pulled out another document.

“There’s one more thing.””

My father looked at him.

“What?””

He placed a printed message on the table.

“This was sent two hours before Thanksgiving dinner.””

I stared at the page.

A message from Melissa.

To Ryan.

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

*She needs to stop pretending she’s better than us. Tonight, we remind her she’s not untouchable.*

My breath caught.

Ryan looked at the message.

Then at me.

“Claire…”

I couldn’t answer.

Because suddenly I understood.

The balcony wasn’t about making me stronger.

It wasn’t about a joke.

It wasn’t about Melissa losing control.

She wanted to hurt me.

She wanted me afraid.

And the worst part?

She had been certain Ryan would never stop her.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stood outside.

“Colonel Bennett?””

My father looked up.

“Yes?””

The officer held a small evidence bag.

“We found this in Melissa Carter’s car.””

Inside the bag was a folded piece of paper.

The officer looked at me.

“We believe you need to see it.””

My father took it.

Slowly, he unfolded the paper.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Something worse.

Pain.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my father struggling to find words.

Because written on that paper was a sentence that wasn’t meant to be found.

A sentence that revealed Melissa’s real plan.

A sentence that made Ryan whisper:

“She wasn’t trying to scare you…”

May you like

He looked at the paper.

“She was trying to make sure you never came home.””
