Chapter 8: The Brother Who Never Left

Roberto stared at the message.

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of seven years of lies.

*Ask your brother why he came back to the mansion tonight.*

His brother.

The phrase itself felt impossible.

Because Roberto had spent years believing he was the only person left from his family.

His parents died when he was young.

His brother disappeared from his life long before Elena’s death.

A wound Roberto had stopped trying to reopen.

A person he had buried without a funeral.

“Who is your brother?””

Isabella’s voice broke the silence.

Roberto looked at her.

The question should have been easy.

Instead, it felt like admitting a secret he had hidden even from himself.

“Adrian.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Isabella noticed immediately.

“You know that name.””

Vanessa looked away.

Roberto stepped toward her.

“You know my brother?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled.

“I met him once.””

“When?””

“Before we got married.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because Elena asked me to.””

Roberto froze.

“Elena?””

“Yes.””

“Why would Elena ask you to meet my brother?””

Vanessa looked toward the security monitors.

“Because she knew something was wrong.””

“With Adrian?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

Roberto felt a mixture of anger and confusion.

“My brother disappeared years before Elena died.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“What?””

“He didn’t disappear.””

Her voice dropped.

“He was watching.””

The words hit him.

Roberto remembered being twenty-six.

The last conversation he had with Adrian.

The anger.

The accusations.

The moment Adrian told him he would regret choosing ambition over family.

Then he left.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

No contact.

Roberto spent years believing Adrian hated him.

“You’re saying my brother was here?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Not always.””

“Then where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Roberto looked at the woman standing in front of him.

For years, he had believed Vanessa’s greatest secret was betrayal.

Now he realized it was something else.

Fear.

She had always been afraid.

But of whom?

A sound came from upstairs.

A small creak.

Everyone stopped.

Roberto’s eyes immediately moved toward the staircase.

“Sofía.””

He ran.

The others followed.

His daughter’s bedroom door was open.

Roberto’s heart dropped.

He had closed it.

He knew he had.

“Sofía?””

No answer.

Then:

“Daddy.””

Her voice came from the window.

Roberto rushed over.

She was standing there, holding something.

Not afraid.

Confused.

“What happened?””

She turned toward him.

“Someone left this.””

He took the object from her hands.

A small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

His heart stopped.

Because he recognized it.

The same kind of envelope Elena had carried in the footage.

“Where did you find it?””

“On my pillow.””

Roberto looked around the room.

The window was closed.

The security alarm showed no activity.

Impossible.

Someone had entered.

Someone had been close enough to his daughter to place something beside her while she slept.

His protective instincts exploded.

“Did you hear anyone?””

Sofía nodded.

“A man.””

Roberto went still.

“What did he say?””

She touched her fingers together nervously.

“He said he was sorry.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did he touch you?””

“No.””

Roberto knelt immediately.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She reached toward his face.

“Daddy.””

“Yes?””

“Why do you sound scared?””

The question broke something inside him.

Because he realized his daughter had spent years recognizing fear in others.

And he had spent years pretending he didn’t feel it.

“I’m okay.””

She shook her head.

“You say that when you’re not.””

Roberto closed his eyes briefly.

Then he opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The handwriting was not Elena’s.

It was Adrian’s.

His brother’s.

Roberto knew it immediately.

Only one sentence was written.

*I came back because Elena asked me to protect Sofía.*

His breathing stopped.

Below that:

*I failed her once. I won’t fail her again.*

Roberto looked up.

The anger he felt was mixed with something he hated even more.

Hope.

A dangerous emotion.

Because hope made people vulnerable.

“Where is Adrian?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“He contacted me tonight.””

Roberto stared.

“You knew he was here?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to confirm the truth.””

Roberto laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in my life seems to be trying to protect me by lying to me.””

Daniel accepted the criticism.

Because he knew it was deserved.

“What did Adrian say?””

Daniel looked at the note.

“He said he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Elena’s accident wasn’t the beginning.””

Roberto frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It means the crash was the final step.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Final step of what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“An operation.””

Roberto stared.

“An operation?””

“Someone had been moving money through your company.””

The words immediately connected.

Business.

Marcus.

Adrian.

Elena.

Vanessa.

Everything.

“How long?””

“Years.””

Roberto felt sick.

“My company?””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone used your name, your reputation, and your trust.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

Roberto noticed.

“Say it.””

“I don’t know.””

“Say it.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Someone close to you.””

The same phrase again.

Everyone kept saying it.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone inside.

Roberto’s phone rang.

This time, the number was visible.

A number he had never seen.

But Daniel recognized it.

His face changed.

“It’s him.””

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“Adrian.””

Roberto answered.

For a few seconds, neither person spoke.

Then a voice came through.

Older.

Tired.

Familiar.

“Roberto.””

His chest tightened.

“Adrian.””

A long silence.

“I knew you would eventually find out.””

“You’ve been here.””

“Yes.””

“You came into my house.””

“Yes.””

“You were near Sofía.””

“Yes.””

Roberto’s anger rose.

“Do you understand what that sounds like?””

“I do.””

“You expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

The answer surprised him.

“No?””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice sounded broken.

“Because if I were you, I wouldn’t trust me either.””

Roberto said nothing.

“I made mistakes.””

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You abandoned us.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Because Elena made me promise.””

Roberto’s grip tightened.

“Promise what?””

“That if anything happened to her, I would stay away from you.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed the person watching you would hurt anyone close to you.””

Roberto looked around the room.

“So you left?””

“Yes.””

“And that protected us?””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice cracked.

“It only delayed what was coming.””

A pause.

Then Roberto asked:

“Who killed Elena?””

Silence.

Longer this time.

Finally Adrian answered.

“I don’t know.””

Roberto’s anger returned.

“You don’t know?””

“I know who helped.””

“Who?””

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Your brother-in-law.””

Roberto froze.

“My brother-in-law?””

“Yes.””

“I don’t have a brother-in-law.””

Adrian went silent.

And that silence terrified him.

“Roberto…”

“What?””

“There is something you don’t know about Elena.””

His heart pounded.

“What?””

“She wasn’t alone the night she died.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone else was in the car.””

Roberto stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Your daughter.””

The room disappeared.

Roberto looked at Sofía.

His daughter.

The child who survived.

The child who lost her sight.

The child who had been told she was only a victim of an accident.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian answered:

“Sofía remembers more than she thinks.””

Roberto looked at her.

She was listening.

She always listened.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because someone told her not to.””

“Who?””

Adrian paused.

Then:

“The same person who has been inside your home tonight.””

The call ended.

Immediately.

Roberto stood frozen.

Then Sofía spoke.

Quietly.

“Daddy.””

He turned.

“Yes?””

Her face was pale.

“I think I remember something.””

Roberto knelt.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Mommy was scared.””

“When?””

“Before the crash.””

“What did she say?””

Sofía closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She said…”

Roberto waited.

“She said, ‘If Roberto asks, tell him the truth.’”

His heart broke.

“What truth?””

Sofía opened her eyes.

And whispered:

“She said the person who hurt us…”

A pause.

“…was not trying to kill Mommy.””

Roberto leaned closer.

“Then what were they trying to do?””

Sofía’s voice trembled.

“They were trying to take me.””

At that moment, every light in the mansion went out.

And from the hallway came a slow sound.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking toward them.

Someone who had entered without triggering a single alarm.

Someone who knew exactly where Sofía was.

Then a familiar voice spoke from the darkness.

“Roberto.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

And he knew one thing.

May you like

The person standing outside the room had been there all along.

“Your daughter finally remembered.””
