Chapter 7: The Night Elena Came Home

Roberto stared at the photograph until the pixels blurred.

His mind kept rejecting it.

Again and again.

Because accepting it meant accepting something impossible.

Elena had not died on the road.

She had survived long enough to return home.

Long enough to enter this mansion.

Long enough to fear someone inside it.

And someone had been waiting for her.

His thumb moved across the screen.

The timestamp remained.

Seven years ago.

The night everything ended.

The night everyone told him he lost his wife.

But the photograph told a different story.

A darker one.

“Where did you get this?””

His voice was barely recognizable.

The woman who claimed to be Elena’s sister looked at him.

“From Elena.””

Roberto looked up sharply.

“What?””

“She knew someone would eventually need proof.””

“Then why didn’t she give it to me?””

The woman’s expression changed.

“Because she didn’t know who she could trust.””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Then back to the woman.

“Who are you?””

She hesitated.

“My name is Isabella.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Vanessa reacted did.

A small movement.

A slight widening of her eyes.

Roberto saw it.

“You know her.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Roberto…”

“You know her.””

“I knew of her.””

“Explain.””

Isabella stepped into the hallway.

“Your wife and I stopped being sisters a long time ago.””

Roberto frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Elena discovered the truth about our family.””

“What truth?””

Isabella looked toward the photograph.

“That some people will destroy anything to keep their secrets alive.””

Daniel suddenly moved.

Just one step.

But Roberto noticed.

“You’re nervous.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

“You are.””

“I’m trying to prevent this from getting worse.””

Roberto laughed quietly.

“Getting worse?””

His eyes hardened.

“My wife is dead. My daughter lost her sight. People I trusted have been lying to me for years.””

He stepped closer.

“What exactly does worse look like?””

Daniel had no answer.

That was the first time Roberto saw fear in him.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Daniel,” Roberto said slowly.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Something?””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if I wanted you dead, you wouldn’t be standing here.””

The sentence filled the hallway.

Everyone went silent.

Roberto’s face changed.

Not because of the threat.

Because Daniel had admitted something without realizing it.

“You just confirmed you had the opportunity.””

Daniel’s expression tightened.

He looked away.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

But he ignored her.

Roberto noticed.

“Are you two working together?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not like you think.””

“Then tell me how I should think.””

No answer.

The frustration inside Roberto reached its limit.

He walked into the security room.

The monitors covered one wall.

Every camera.

Every hallway.

Every entrance.

His home.

His fortress.

His prison.

“How many years?””

Daniel followed him.

“What?””

“How many years have you known someone was hiding inside my house?””

Daniel looked at the screens.

“Seven.””

The answer was quiet.

But it landed like a weapon.

Roberto turned slowly.

“Seven years?””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You were trying?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Do you think I wanted to watch you suffer?””

Roberto’s voice dropped.

“I think you watched.””

Daniel flinched.

A small reaction.

But enough.

Roberto looked at the monitors.

“Show me the footage from the night of the accident.””

Daniel immediately said:

“No.””

Roberto turned.

“No?””

“You don’t want to see it.””

“That’s my decision.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he walked to the computer.

His fingers moved.

A folder appeared.

*ARCHIVE — ELENA CRASH NIGHT*

Roberto stared.

The file existed.

All these years.

Hidden inside his own security system.

“You kept this?””

Daniel nodded.

“Why?””

“Because the official investigation didn’t make sense.””

Roberto looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I had doubts.””

“Doubts are not answers.””

“No.””

Daniel opened the file.

The video loaded.

The date appeared.

Seven years earlier.

The mansion looked younger.

Different.

But familiar.

Roberto watched silently.

The camera showed the front entrance.

A car arriving.

His heart stopped.

Because it was Elena’s car.

She was alive.

She stepped out.

Walking.

Breathing.

Holding something against her chest.

An envelope.

Roberto moved closer to the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

Nobody spoke.

Elena entered the house.

The footage switched.

Kitchen.

Hallway.

Living room.

Then suddenly—

The camera went black.

Roberto looked at Daniel.

“What happened?””

“The system was manually shut down.””

“By who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The footage returned.

A different camera angle.

Elena was standing in the hallway.

And someone was facing her.

The image was grainy.

But clear enough.

Roberto froze.

Because the person standing in front of Elena was Vanessa.

Not the Vanessa he knew.

A younger Vanessa.

Angry.

Desperate.

Holding the same envelope Elena carried.

Roberto’s stomach twisted.

“No.””

Vanessa behind him whispered:

“Roberto…”

He turned.

“Explain.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

She looked at the screen.

“I met Elena that night.””

“Why?””

“She came to me.””

“For what?””

“To ask for help.””

Roberto stared.

“You were helping her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you in the footage fighting?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I was trying to stop her from leaving.””

The sentence sounded terrible.

Even to her.

Roberto’s expression changed.

“Stop her?””

“I was scared.””

“Of Marcus?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

She looked at him.

“You.””

The answer shocked him.

“Me?””

“She knew you would go after the truth.””

“Of course I would.””

“And she knew what would happen if you found out.””

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“That the person behind everything was someone you loved.””

The room became silent.

Roberto looked at the screen again.

Elena.

Vanessa.

The envelope.

The argument.

“What happened next?””

Daniel answered.

“The footage cuts there.””

“Why?””

“Because someone deleted the rest.””

Roberto looked at him.

“Can you recover it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I tried.””

“Can you?””

“Yes.””

“Then do it.””

Daniel sat down.

The computer processed the damaged files.

Minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

Then suddenly, the screen flickered.

A hidden clip appeared.

The timestamp changed.

One hour later.

The camera showed the basement.

Roberto felt a strange fear building inside him.

Because he knew that place.

The basement had been closed after Elena died.

No one went there.

The video began.

Elena entered.

She was crying.

Behind her was Vanessa.

And behind Vanessa…

A man.

Roberto leaned closer.

The image sharpened.

His heart stopped.

Because the man was not Marcus.

It was not Daniel.

It was someone else.

Someone he had known for years.

Someone whose voice he had trusted.

The man stepped into the light.

And Elena turned toward him.

“You promised you would protect Sofía.””

The man answered:

“I did.””

Elena shook her head.

“You protected yourself.””

Roberto felt his entire body go numb.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it every day.

At breakfast.

At dinner.

At business meetings.

At family gatherings.

The man stepped closer to Elena.

And said:

“I’m sorry, but you should have stayed quiet.””

The video froze.

Daniel looked at Roberto.

No one moved.

Then Roberto whispered:

“Play it.””

Daniel pressed the button.

The frozen image moved again.

Elena backed away.

The man reached for her.

And before the screen cut out, Roberto heard the final words Elena ever spoke.

Words meant for him.

“Roberto was right about one thing…”

A pause.

“He should have never trusted his own brother.””

The screen went black.

Roberto stood completely still.

Because he had spent seven years believing his enemy was outside his family.

But the truth had been living beside him all along.

And upstairs, sleeping in the room he built to protect her…

Was the daughter of the man who had destroyed everything.

His phone vibrated.

One new message.

No number.

No photograph.

May you like

Only a sentence.

*Ask your brother why he came back to the mansion tonight.*
