Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Mask

Roberto forgot how to breathe.

For several seconds, his mind refused to process what his eyes were seeing.

The woman standing inside the security room had Vanessa’s face.

The same blonde hair.

The same posture.

The same voice.

But it couldn’t be her.

Because Vanessa was standing right behind him.

He slowly turned.

She was there.

One hand covering her mouth.

Her face had lost all color.

Not the face of someone caught lying.

The face of someone seeing a ghost.

“Who is that?”” Roberto whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice cracked.

And Roberto heard it.

The fear.

The confusion.

The terror.

Inside the security room, the woman laughed softly.

“You always were slower than I expected, Roberto.””

His entire body went cold.

Because she knew his name.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from Daniel.

From him.

The woman stepped closer to the doorway.

The emergency lights painted her face in red shadows.

“Seven years,” she said.

“And you still never questioned anything.””

Roberto moved in front of Vanessa instinctively.

Not because he trusted her.

Because his first instinct was always protecting his family.

Even when the family itself had become a mystery.

“Who are you?””

The woman smiled.

“You really don’t recognize me?””

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“That hurts.””

Daniel stood beside her.

His expression was different from the respectful one Roberto knew.

No professionalism.

No loyalty.

Only confidence.

“Roberto,” Daniel said calmly, “you should have stayed at the office tonight.””

The words echoed.

Because that was exactly what the message had said.

He was not supposed to come home early.

He was not supposed to see.

“Why?”” Roberto asked.

Daniel looked at him.

“Because some truths are easier to hide when people follow routines.””

The sentence made Roberto’s stomach twist.

The routine.

His predictable schedule.

His late nights.

His absence.

They had counted on it.

They had built their secrets around it.

“How long?”” Roberto asked.

Daniel frowned.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been using my house?””

Silence.

Then the woman smiled.

“That’s the wrong question.””

Roberto stared at her.

“What’s the right one?””

She stepped closer.

“The right question is why Elena trusted the wrong person.””

The mention of his wife’s name made his anger explode.

“Don’t speak about Elena.””

The woman’s smile disappeared.

“Why? Because you think you knew her?””

Roberto’s jaw tightened.

“I knew my wife.””

“No.””

The woman looked almost sorry.

“You knew the woman she allowed you to know.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

The woman’s expression changed.

A small smile returned.

“There she is.””

Roberto looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The woman laughed.

“You never told him?””

Roberto turned.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Roberto…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Not another secret.””

The woman leaned against the doorframe.

“She’s been very good at secrets.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“She always was.””

Roberto looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

A thousand memories rushed through Roberto’s mind.

Daniel standing beside him at Elena’s funeral.

Daniel helping him install security cameras.

Daniel telling him he would protect Sofía.

All those years.

All that trust.

“You were never protecting my family,” Roberto said.

Daniel looked away.

“I did what I had to do.””

“No.””

Roberto stepped closer.

“You did what someone paid you to do.””

Daniel’s silence confirmed it.

Vanessa whispered:

“Roberto, listen to me.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I can explain.””

“Can you?””

Her lips trembled.

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at the woman.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Roberto.

“The woman you’re looking at…”

She stopped.

Roberto waited.

“She’s not who you think.””

The woman laughed.

“That’s ironic coming from you.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“She’s Elena’s sister.””

The world seemed to stop.

Roberto stared.

“Elena never had a sister.””

The woman smiled.

“That’s what you were told.””

A thousand questions collided in his mind.

“Elena had no siblings.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She did.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because Elena cut contact with her years before you met.””

“Why?””

The woman answered.

“Because she knew what I was capable of.””

Roberto looked at her.

“Then why are you here?””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, the confidence disappeared.

“Because Elena left something behind.””

“The box?””

“Yes.””

Roberto tightened his grip.

“The box was empty.””

The woman smiled.

“No.””

“What?””

“You found the first box.””

A chill moved through him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Roberto, you don’t understand what’s happening.””

Roberto turned sharply.

“You’re right. I don’t.””

His voice became colder.

“But I’m starting to understand one thing.””

He pointed at Daniel.

“You have been inside my home for years.””

Then at the woman.

“You have been hiding from me.””

Then at Vanessa.

“And you have been lying to me.””

Nobody spoke.

Roberto continued.

“You all knew something about my wife.””

The woman looked at him.

“Your wife knew something about all of us.””

“What?””

“She found out that Marcus Vale wasn’t the person behind everything.””

The room went silent.

Roberto’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

The woman stepped closer.

“Marcus was dangerous.””

A pause.

“But he wasn’t the only one.””

Roberto remembered the note.

*Trust no one. Not even Vanessa.*

“What did Elena discover?””

The woman looked at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Roberto.

“She discovered that someone close to her was working with Marcus.””

Roberto’s heartbeat increased.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Was it you?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

But this time, Roberto believed the fear in her voice.

“Then who?””

The woman whispered:

“The person Elena trusted most after you.””

Roberto frowned.

“Who?””

The woman’s eyes moved toward the staircase.

Toward the room where Sofía slept.

And Roberto felt his entire body go cold.

“No.””

The woman’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

He stepped backward.

“You’re wrong.””

But then his phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

Roberto opened it.

A photograph appeared.

His hands went numb.

It was a picture taken moments earlier.

Inside Sofía’s bedroom.

While they were downstairs.

The photo showed someone standing beside his daughter’s bed.

Someone who had entered without triggering the alarm.

Someone who knew the security system.

Someone who knew the house.

The message underneath contained only four words:

*Look at the mirror.*

Roberto stared at the image.

Then he noticed something.

In the reflection of Sofía’s bedroom mirror…

A person was visible.

Not the intruder.

Someone else.

Someone standing outside the room.

Someone watching.

And Roberto recognized the clothing immediately.

Because it belonged to the person standing beside him.

Vanessa.

He slowly raised his eyes.

Vanessa saw the photograph.

Her face collapsed.

“Roberto…”

He took a step back.

“Were you upstairs?””

“No.””

“Then why are you in the reflection?””

“I wasn’t.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not!””

The woman from the security room suddenly whispered:

“Roberto.””

He looked at her.

She pointed at the phone.

“Zoom in.””

His fingers moved automatically.

He enlarged the reflection.

And then he saw it.

A detail hidden behind Vanessa.

A second shadow.

A second person.

Someone holding something in their hand.

A knife.

Roberto’s blood ran cold.

Because the person standing behind Vanessa wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he had trusted even more.

Someone who had access to every corner of his home.

Someone who had been near Sofía for years.

Daniel.

But Daniel was standing right in front of him.

Roberto looked between the image and the man.

Impossible.

Unless…

The person in the photograph wasn’t from tonight.

The timestamp appeared at the bottom.

Seven years ago.

The night Elena died.

Roberto stopped breathing.

Because the picture had been taken inside the mansion…

After the accident.

And Elena was in the background.

Alive.

Standing behind the person with the knife.

Roberto stared at the screen.

His entire world shifted.

His wife had not died immediately after the crash.

She had made it home.

She had come back to the house.

And someone inside this mansion had been waiting for her.

May you like

Then a final message appeared.

*Now you know why Elena never told you the truth. She wasn’t trying to protect herself. She was trying to protect Sofía.*
