Chapter 3: The Stranger Behind the Shadows
Roberto watched the final frame of the video until the screen went black.
He didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
Because the person standing in the shadows wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone whose face had haunted his memories for seven years.
Someone he thought he would never see again.
Someone who was supposed to be gone.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“No…”
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Vanessa’s eyes moved from his face to the phone.
She knew.
She knew exactly what he had seen.
“Roberto,” she whispered.
He slowly looked up.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the moment something inside him broke.
Not because she was silent.
Because he had spent years believing she would always stand beside him.
He had ignored small warnings.
Small comments.
Small moments where Sofía looked uncomfortable around her.
He had defended Vanessa when others questioned whether she truly understood the responsibility of becoming part of their family.
He had told himself everyone needed time.
Everyone needed patience.
Everyone needed a chance.
But maybe he had been giving chances to the wrong people.
“Who is he?”” Roberto asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“Roberto…”
“Who is he?””
His voice was louder this time.
Sofía, standing nearby, flinched.
Immediately, Roberto softened.
He hated that his anger had entered the same room as his daughter.
He crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, go back upstairs.””
“Daddy…”
“I’m okay.””
She reached for his hand.
“You’re shaking.””
The simple observation cut deeper than any accusation.
Because she was right.
Roberto was shaking.
Not from fear.
From the realization that the walls he built around his daughter might have protected her from strangers but failed to protect her from the people inside.
“I’ll be there soon,” he promised.
Sofía held his hand for another second.
Then she nodded.
“Don’t let people lie to you.””
Roberto froze.
“Why did you say that?””
The little girl looked toward Vanessa.
“Because the house sounds different when someone is lying.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
For the first time that night, she looked genuinely unsettled.
Roberto watched his daughter slowly walk upstairs.
Only when her bedroom door closed did he turn back.
“Now.””
Vanessa remained silent.
“Who is he?””
She crossed her arms.
“I don’t know what you think you saw.””
“You know exactly what I saw.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
“I’m not afraid.””
“Vanessa.””
His voice dropped.
“I built a company from nothing. I know when someone is trying to distract me.””
She looked at him.
“And you think that’s what I’m doing?””
“I think you’re hiding something.””
The accusation hung between them.
For a few seconds, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
“After everything I’ve done for you, this is what you think?””
Roberto stared at her.
“What have you done?””
The question made her angry.
“You really want to ask me that?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“I stayed when everyone else left.””
Roberto’s expression hardened.
“Everyone?””
“When Elena died, your entire life collapsed. You barely spoke. You barely slept. You were obsessed with protecting Sofía and punishing yourself.””
His face tightened at the mention of Elena.
“You don’t get to use her.””
“I’m not using her.””
“You are.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Roberto. I’m reminding you that I was there.””
He looked at her.
“And now I’m asking why.””
Her eyebrows narrowed.
“Why what?””
“Why were you really there?””
The question hit harder than he expected.
For a moment, Vanessa looked hurt.
Then the expression disappeared.
“You think I married you for money?””
Roberto didn’t answer.
And that was answer enough.
Her face changed.
“You do.””
“I didn’t say that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
She turned away.
But Roberto noticed something.
A small tremor in her hand.
Nervousness.
Not sadness.
Nervousness.
“Daniel,” Roberto said.
She stopped.
“What about him?””
“Why was he with you?””
“He was checking security.””
“At midnight?””
“It wasn’t midnight.””
“Don’t change the subject.””
Vanessa turned back.
“He works here.””
“He reports to me.””
“And?””
“And he doesn’t meet people in my private office without telling me.””
She stared at him.
Then slowly smiled.
A cold smile.
“You’re angry because you think I cheated.””
Roberto didn’t respond.
“But you haven’t even asked the more important question.””
“What question?””
“Why would someone send you that video?””
The words caught him off guard.
Vanessa continued.
“Think about it. Whoever sent that wants you angry. They want you suspicious. They want you to destroy everything before you know the truth.””
Roberto studied her.
It was a reasonable argument.
And that bothered him.
Because Vanessa was good with words.
She always had been.
She knew exactly how to make herself sound like the victim.
But this time, he needed facts.
Not feelings.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Vanessa’s eyes flickered.
A tiny reaction.
“He went home.””
Roberto immediately noticed.
“You know that?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She hesitated.
“I saw him leave.””
“When?””
“Earlier.””
“What time?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Vanessa.””
“About eight.””
Roberto looked toward the security panel near the entrance.
“The cameras show everyone who leaves.””
She became quiet.
He walked toward the panel.
The system displayed recent activity.
Visitors.
Staff.
Vehicle movements.
He entered the security code.
Access denied.
He frowned.
He tried again.
Access denied.
His eyes narrowed.
“Why is my access not working?””
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence was enough.
“Vanessa.””
“I don’t know.””
“Who changed my security permissions?””
“I don’t know.””
He turned.
“You’re lying.””
She looked offended.
But before she could answer, the mansion lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then everything went dark.
The emergency lights turned on a second later.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
Roberto immediately moved toward the staircase.
“Sofía.””
He ran upstairs.
“Daddy!””
Her voice came from her room.
He opened the door.
She was sitting on the bed.
Safe.
But terrified.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“Someone was outside.””
Roberto looked toward the window.
The curtains moved slightly.
“Did you see someone?””
“No.””
“Did you hear something?””
She nodded.
“What?””
Her face tightened.
“A man.””
Roberto felt his stomach drop.
“What did he say?””
Sofía held onto the blanket.
“He said…”
She stopped.
“Sweetheart?””
“He said, ‘She promised me he would never come home early.’”
Roberto froze.
Behind him, Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
Because she heard it too.
Roberto slowly turned.
The accusation was no longer in his eyes.
Only disbelief.
“Who was he talking about?””
No one answered.
Then Sofía whispered something else.
Something that made the room feel colder.
“Daddy…”
“Yes?””
“I know that man’s voice.””
Roberto stepped closer.
“Who was it?””
The little girl looked toward him.
“I heard him seven years ago.””
Roberto’s breath stopped.
Seven years.
The accident.
The night Elena died.
The night everything changed.
Sofía’s hands began to tremble.
“He was the person who came to Mommy’s car before the crash.””
Roberto felt the world tilt beneath his feet.
Because for seven years, he believed his wife’s death was a terrible accident.
A tragedy with no one to blame.
But his daughter had just opened a door he had spent years trying to keep closed.
And before he could ask another question, his phone buzzed.
One final message appeared.
No photo.
No video.
Just a name.
May you like
A name that made Roberto’s blood run cold.
*The man you buried seven years ago is alive. And Vanessa has known the entire time.*
