Chapter 4: The Secret Buried With Elena

For seven years, Roberto had lived with one truth.

Elena was gone.

The doctors confirmed it.

The police confirmed it.

The evidence confirmed it.

A rainy highway.

A broken guardrail.

A car that had lost control.

A tragic accident that took the woman he loved and left his daughter fighting for the pieces of a life that no longer existed.

He had built his entire existence around that pain.

Every decision.

Every sleepless night.

Every protective measure.

Every dollar he spent trying to give Sofía the life Elena would have wanted.

But now, standing in his daughter’s bedroom, hearing the words she had carried silently for years, Roberto felt the ground beneath him disappear.

Because if Sofía was right…

Then he had not only lost Elena.

He had spent seven years mourning a lie.

“Daddy?””

Sofía’s voice pulled him back.

He looked at his daughter.

The little girl who had been only a few months old when the accident happened.

The little girl who should have grown up hearing stories about her mother.

Not carrying memories of fear.

“Sweetheart,” Roberto said carefully, “what do you mean you heard him before?””

Sofía held the blanket tightly.

“I don’t know.””

“Try to remember.””

Her face tightened.

Roberto immediately regretted pushing.

But he needed answers.

For Elena.

For Sofía.

For himself.

“I was little,” Sofía whispered.

“But I remember sounds.””

Roberto sat beside her.

“What sounds?””

“The rain.””

His chest tightened.

“The rain?””

“Yes.””

She nodded slowly.

“And Mommy singing.””

For a moment, Roberto couldn’t breathe.

Because he remembered that too.

Elena always sang when she drove.

Soft songs.

Old songs.

Songs she said made boring roads feel shorter.

Sofía continued.

“And then there was a loud sound.””

“The crash?””

She nodded.

“Then someone opened the door.””

Roberto felt his hands go cold.

The official report said Elena died instantly.

No one was supposed to have reached the vehicle before emergency services.

No one.

“What happened after that?”” he asked.

Sofía closed her eyes.

“I heard a man.””

“What did he say?””

“I don’t remember everything.””

“It’s okay.””

She swallowed.

“But he was angry.””

Roberto looked at her.

“Angry?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

The room became silent.

Then Sofía whispered:

“He said Mommy wasn’t supposed to be there.””

Roberto stood up.

The words hit him like a physical blow.

Behind him, Vanessa shifted.

He had almost forgotten she was there.

Almost.

But now he remembered.

And he remembered the message.

*Vanessa has known the entire time.*

He turned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her face was no longer controlled.

No longer elegant.

The perfect mask had cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

Roberto stared.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked toward Sofía.

“Not here.””

His eyes narrowed.

“No.””

“Roberto.””

“No more secrets.””

His voice filled the room.

“Sofía spent seven years believing she was the only one carrying this memory.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“I was protecting her.””

“No.””

The word came instantly.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Her expression changed.

And that reaction confirmed everything.

Roberto walked past her and closed Sofía’s bedroom door gently.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa remained still.

Finally, she whispered:

“The man in the video…”

“Who is he?””

She looked at the floor.

“His name is Marcus Vale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until it did.

Roberto’s face changed.

Because somewhere deep in his memory, he knew that name.

Not from his personal life.

From business.

Years ago, before Roberto’s company became successful, Marcus Vale had been one of his competitors.

A businessman with a reputation for aggressive deals.

A man who lost everything after Roberto exposed illegal practices connected to one of his companies.

Marcus disappeared afterward.

Everyone assumed he left the country.

“You knew him?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“How?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“He contacted me before we met.””

Roberto stared.

“What?””

“He wanted information.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“Why?””

“Because of the accident.””

Roberto’s voice became dangerous.

“What information?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He believed Elena knew something about him.””

“Something?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“That’s a lie.””

She looked at him.

“I know she had documents.””

Roberto froze.

“What documents?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re telling me my wife was carrying information that could destroy Marcus Vale, and you never told me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“When did you know?””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice dropped.

“Six months after Elena died.””

Roberto stepped back.

Six months.

She had known for six months.

And she said nothing.

“Why?””

“I was scared.””

“Of Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

The question came quietly.

That made it worse.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t marry you because of Marcus.””

“But you knew about him.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came into my house.””

“Yes.””

“You became part of my daughter’s life.””

Her eyes moved toward the stairs.

“I cared about Sofía.””

“Did you?””

The question hurt her.

Good.

Because Roberto was hurting.

“I did.””

“Then why did you hide this from her father?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Before she could speak, Roberto’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Older.

Confident.

“Roberto.””

His entire body froze.

He recognized the voice.

Not because he remembered meeting him.

Because he had heard it before.

In nightmares.

In old recordings.

In the moments after Elena’s funeral when he replayed every piece of evidence trying to understand what happened.

“Marcus.””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“So Vanessa finally told you.””

Roberto’s grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

“You sound angry.””

“You came into my house.””

“No.””

Marcus corrected him.

“I came back to what was mine.””

Roberto’s expression darkened.

“What does that mean?””

“You still don’t know, do you?””

“Know what?””

“The truth about Elena.””

The name alone was enough to make Roberto’s anger explode.

“Don’t say her name.””

“Why? Because it hurts?””

“Because you don’t deserve to.””

A pause.

Then Marcus spoke softly.

“She was going to expose me.””

Roberto said nothing.

“She discovered something she wasn’t supposed to discover.””

“What?””

“You should ask Vanessa.””

Roberto looked toward the woman standing across from him.

“She already told me you contacted her.””

Another pause.

Then Marcus laughed.

“She told you that?””

“What else is there?””

“Ask her why she really stayed.””

Roberto’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

But Marcus ignored the question.

“Ask her why she never mentioned the envelope Elena left behind.””

Roberto felt the air leave his lungs.

“Envelope?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

A flash of fear.

Real fear.

Roberto saw it.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“Where is it?””

“Roberto…”

“Where is the envelope?””

She didn’t answer.

That was all the confirmation he needed.

“Where?””

Her voice shook.

“I burned it.””

The room went silent.

Roberto stared at her.

“You burned Elena’s last message?””

“I didn’t know what was inside.””

“You burned it?””

“I was scared!””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Of finding out Elena knew the truth.””

Roberto’s phone remained against his ear.

Marcus was still listening.

Then he spoke.

“Now you understand.””

Roberto looked at the phone.

“What?””

“Your wife wasn’t killed because she knew a secret.””

A pause.

“She was killed because she left the secret with someone else.””

Roberto felt his heartbeat slow.

Because suddenly he understood something.

Marcus had not come back for revenge.

He had come back for something.

Something Elena had hidden.

Something Vanessa had tried to destroy.

Something that was still inside his house.

“Where is it?”” Roberto asked.

Marcus’s voice became almost a whisper.

“You already have it.””

Roberto looked around.

At the mansion.

At the walls.

At the place where he raised his daughter.

At the place he believed was safe.

Then Marcus said:

“Your wife hid the evidence in the only place she knew you would never search.””

The call ended.

Roberto stood frozen.

Until Sofía’s voice came from behind him.

“Daddy?””

He turned.

She was standing at the doorway.

And in her hand was a small wooden box.

One he had never seen before.

“I found this when the lights went out.””

Roberto slowly walked toward her.

“Where did you get that?””

Sofía touched the box carefully.

“From Mommy’s room.””

His breath stopped.

Because Elena’s old room had been locked for seven years.

No one entered.

No one touched anything.

And yet somehow…

His blind daughter had found what everyone else had missed.

She held the box toward him.

“Daddy…”

Her voice trembled.

“I think Mommy wanted you to have this.””

Roberto opened the lid.

Inside was a single photograph.

And behind the photograph was a handwritten note.

Only five words.

May you like

Five words that changed everything.

*Roberto, trust no one. Not even Vanessa.*
