Chapter 8: The Face Behind The Betrayal

The call ended.

But Noah’s voice stayed.

*“The person keeping me here is someone you told me I could always trust.””*

Ethan stared at the phone.

His fingers were frozen around it.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

Noah wasn’t taken by a stranger.

He was taken by someone who knew him.

Someone who had been close enough to earn his trust.

Someone who knew Ethan’s family.

Sarah slowly looked around the room.

“Who?””

No one answered.

Ethan looked at Claire.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Not relieved.

Terrified.

Then he looked at Mark.

The lawyer who had hidden the truth.

The man who knew Laura’s secrets.

The man who had admitted helping create the lie that destroyed their lives.

Then Sarah.

Laura’s friend.

The person who had protected the letter for two years.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had reasons.

And now Noah was somewhere with one of them.

Ethan’s phone buzzed.

A message.

*Unknown Number: You still don’t understand. You’re looking at the wrong people.*

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

He typed quickly.

*Who has my son?*

The response came.

*The person who wanted you to choose between your wife and your child.*

Ethan’s heart sank.

Because there was only one person who had been doing that from the beginning.

Claire.

But then another thought came.

What if that was exactly what someone wanted him to believe?

What if the real person behind everything was hiding behind Claire’s mistakes?

“Where is Noah?”” Ethan demanded.

Mark looked at the paper in Ethan’s hand.

“You need to go there.””

Ethan unfolded it.

A location.

An abandoned farmhouse outside town.

His stomach tightened.

“Why would he be there?””

Mark looked away.

“Because that’s where Daniel used to take people when he wanted them hidden.””

Ethan froze.

“Daniel?””

Mark nodded.

“He had a property there.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Then why did you say we were looking at the wrong people?””

Mark didn’t answer.

Ethan noticed.

“Mark.””

The lawyer sighed.

“Because Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who was with him?””

Mark looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

“You know something.””

“I know Daniel had help.””

“From who?””

Mark hesitated.

Then his eyes moved to Claire.

Ethan noticed.

His entire body tensed.

“No.””

Claire stepped back.

“No, Ethan.””

“You looked at her.””

“Because I’m afraid of her.””

Everyone went silent.

Claire stared.

“What?””

Mark shook his head.

“I’m not saying she took Noah.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Claire knows more than she told us.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“Is that true?””

Claire’s face changed.

A thousand emotions passed through her eyes.

Fear.

Regret.

Shame.

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

Ethan felt like he had been hit.

“What else?””

Claire sat down.

“I knew Laura was investigating Daniel.””

“And?””

“And I knew she was afraid.””

“Why?””

“Because Laura found evidence that someone close to you was involved.””

Ethan’s voice became cold.

“Who?””

Claire looked at him.

“I never found out.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did you keep Noah away from me?””

Claire looked down.

The answer came quietly.

“Because I thought you were next.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared.

“What?””

Claire wiped her eyes.

“After Laura died, I found one of her hidden files.””

Mark looked shocked.

“You found it?””

“Yes.””

“What was inside?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Proof that someone was planning to destroy your family.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“And you thought sending my son away would fix that?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought if Noah wasn’t with you, they couldn’t use him to hurt you.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You made him think he wasn’t loved.””

“I know.””

“You made him think I abandoned him.””

“I know.””

“You broke him.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I know.””

For the first time, Ethan saw real regret.

But regret couldn’t erase what happened.

Not yet.

His phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, it included a photo.

Ethan opened it.

His breath stopped.

Noah.

Sitting in a chair.

His face pale.

But alive.

Behind him was a wall.

And written on the wall was one word.

*REMEMBER*

Underneath the photo was a message.

*Come alone if you want your son back.*

Ethan immediately grabbed his jacket.

“No.””

Sarah stepped in front of him.

“You can’t go alone.””

“I have to.””

“That’s what they want.””

“They have Noah.””

“And they want you emotional.””

Ethan looked at her.

“They already took two years from me.””

His voice shook.

“They took his mother.””

He looked at the picture again.

“They took my trust in my own family.””

Then he whispered:

“They are not taking my son.””

Mark stepped forward.

“I’m coming with you.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I know the place.””

“No.””

Mark didn’t move.

“Ethan.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You helped them.””

“Yes.””

“Then why should I trust you?””

Mark looked at the photo of Noah.

“Because I failed Laura.””

His voice cracked.

“And I’m not going to fail her son too.””

Ethan said nothing.

Finally, he nodded.

“Fine.””

Claire stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“I can help.””

“You already helped enough.””

The words hurt.

Ethan saw it.

But he didn’t take them back.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I deserve that.””

Sarah picked up her coat.

“We go together.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You said they might be watching.””

“They are.””

“Then how do we get there?””

Sarah looked toward the road.

“We don’t use your car.””

Forty minutes later, Ethan, Mark, and Sarah approached the abandoned farmhouse.

The place looked exactly like something from a nightmare.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

A rusted fence surrounding the property.

No lights.

No movement.

But Ethan knew.

Someone was there.

Because his son was there.

Mark whispered:

“This is where Daniel kept his private files.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Files?””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

Mark hesitated.

“Everyone.””

A chill moved through Ethan.

“Everyone?””

“Daniel collected information. Secrets. Weaknesses.””

Sarah frowned.

“Why?””

“Control.””

They reached the front door.

It was unlocked.

That scared Ethan more than a locked one would have.

Inside, the house smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Something metallic.

Ethan called softly.

“Noah?””

Nothing.

Then—

“Dad?””

Ethan froze.

“Noah!””

He ran toward the voice.

But Mark grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

Mark pointed.

A small red light blinked near the ceiling.

Camera.

Someone was watching.

A speaker crackled.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

A voice Ethan knew.

A voice he never expected.

“Ethan.””

He stopped.

Because it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Mark.

It wasn’t Claire.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been comforting him since Laura died.

Someone who had held Noah’s hand at the funeral.

Someone Ethan never questioned.

The voice continued:

“You finally came.””

Ethan looked up at the camera.

His blood turned cold.

Because the person speaking knew everything.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every mistake.

And then the voice said:

“I told you two years ago that your family would fall apart.””

A pause.

“And you still believed me.””

Ethan whispered the name.

“No…”

The speaker crackled again.

And the person behind Noah’s disappearance finally revealed themselves.

“Hello, Ethan.””

The voice smiled.

“It’s been a long time.””

And Ethan realized the truth.

The person who destroyed his family…

May you like

Had never been hiding from him.

They had been standing beside him the entire time.
