Chapter 5: The Person Who Knew Where Noah Was
Ethan stood in the middle of the parking lot, holding his phone against his ear.
For the first time in two years, Claire sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
And that terrified him more than anything.
“Who are they?”” Ethan asked.
There was a pause.
A long one.
“Claire.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“I don’t know if I can explain everything over the phone.””
“You know exactly what’s happening.””
“No, Ethan. You think you do.””
His jaw tightened.
“Then tell me.””
Another silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“The person sending those messages is the same person who was at the accident scene.””
Ethan felt the world shift.
“What?””
“I found out last night.””
“You found out?””
“Yes.””
“You mean you knew someone was contacting me?””
“I knew someone might.””
His anger rose.
“You knew?””
“Ethan, listen to me—”
“No. You listen.””
People walking through the parking lot glanced at him, but he didn’t care.
“My son wrote in his notebook that you knew something about Laura’s death.””
Claire went silent.
That was all the answer he needed.
“You knew.””
“Ethan…”
“You knew.””
“I didn’t kill Laura.””
The words came out too quickly.
Ethan froze.
He hadn’t accused her of that.
Not yet.
But she had answered a question he never asked.
“You didn’t kill her?””
Claire’s breathing stopped.
A mistake.
A terrible one.
“Ethan, that’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
“I mean you’re twisting everything.””
“No.””
He looked down at the ground.
“I’m finally seeing it.””
Claire’s voice became softer.
“Please come home.””
The request surprised him.
Not because she wanted him there.
Because she sounded like she was losing control.
“Why?””
“Because Noah is in danger.””
Ethan’s heart tightened.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“You sent him away.””
“I sent him to a safe place.””
“You sent him away because you wanted him gone.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then prove it.””
Silence.
A painful, revealing silence.
Finally Claire spoke.
“Ethan, if you really want answers, come home.””
The call ended.
He stared at the screen.
Sarah was still standing near the coffee shop entrance.
She had heard enough from his expression.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked at her.
“She says Noah is in danger.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“Did she say where he is?””
“No.””
“Then we need to find him.””
Ethan nodded.
But as they walked toward his car, one thought kept repeating in his mind.
Why was Claire scared?
Because she had been exposed?
Or because someone else was coming for Noah?
The first place Ethan went was Noah’s aunt’s house.
His sister, Rachel, lived forty minutes away in a quiet neighborhood filled with old trees and small family homes.
The entire drive, Ethan barely spoke.
Every red light felt too long.
Every second away from Noah felt like another mistake.
When Rachel opened the door, her smile disappeared immediately.
“Ethan?””
She looked behind him.
“Where’s Noah?””
The question cut deeper than anything.
Because Rachel didn’t ask how he was.
She asked where he was.
Like she already knew something was wrong.
“He’s not here?””
Rachel’s face turned pale.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan stepped inside.
“Claire said he was staying with you.””
Rachel stared at him.
Then slowly shook her head.
“She never called me.””
The room went silent.
Ethan felt sick.
“What?””
“She never contacted me.””
“Rachel, she told me she arranged everything.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
Rachel looked confused.
“Ethan… yesterday was the first time I heard Noah was leaving.””
The truth hit him like a wave.
Claire hadn’t sent Noah anywhere safe.
She had removed him.
That was the plan.
His phone buzzed.
Both Ethan and Rachel looked at it.
A message.
From the unknown number.
*You’re looking in the wrong place.*
Ethan opened it.
Another message appeared.
*Noah was never supposed to arrive at his aunt’s house.*
His blood ran cold.
Sarah stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Ethan showed her.
Rachel covered her mouth.
“Where is my nephew?””
No one answered.
Because nobody knew.
And that was the most terrifying part.
An hour later, Ethan was back at home.
Not because he wanted to be there.
Because Claire was there.
And she had promised answers.
She stood in the living room when he entered.
For once, she looked different.
No perfect makeup.
No calm smile.
No carefully chosen words.
She looked exhausted.
“You found out.””
Ethan closed the door.
“Where is my son?””
“I don’t know.””
His expression hardened.
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because someone else took him.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
Claire walked toward the table.
She picked up a folder.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“After I knew who was behind this.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You were going to tell me?””
“Yes.””
“Like you told me about Laura?””
Claire flinched.
A small reaction.
But Ethan saw it.
“You know something.””
Claire looked away.
“I know enough.””
“Then start talking.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed photographs.
Documents.
Records.
Ethan picked them up.
The first picture showed Noah leaving school.
The second showed the same black SUV parked across the street.
The third showed someone watching him.
Ethan’s stomach turned.
“How long?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“How long has someone been following him?””
“Three months.””
“Three months?””
“I found out when I noticed the car.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
Claire looked angry.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Several times.””
“When?””
She hesitated.
“Every time I tried, Noah interrupted.””
Ethan stared at her.
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“That’s not the reason.””
“Then what is?””
Claire looked at the pictures.
“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me.””
Ethan said nothing.
For the first time, he saw something unfamiliar on her face.
Not manipulation.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I hated Noah.””
The confession shocked him.
Claire looked down.
“I hated how much of Laura I saw in him.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“But I never wanted him hurt.””
The room became quiet.
“You wanted him gone.””
“Yes.””
She didn’t deny it.
And somehow that honesty made it worse.
“I wanted him gone from our house.””
She swallowed.
“I wanted you to stop living in the past.””
Ethan stared.
“So you manipulated me.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“I did.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“But someone else was watching.””
Ethan looked at the photos again.
“Who?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you protecting them?””
“I’m not.””
“Then tell me everything.””
She looked at him.
“I will.””
The phone rang.
Not Ethan’s.
Claire’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained of color.
“What?””
Ethan watched her answer.
“Hello?””
No response.
Then a voice.
A child’s voice.
Small.
Terrified.
Ethan saw Claire’s hand begin to shake.
“Who is it?””
Claire looked at him.
She couldn’t speak.
The voice came faintly through the phone.
But Ethan heard it.
He heard his son.
“Claire…”
A pause.
Then Noah whispered:
“Dad was right about you.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Noah!””
The line went silent.
Then a man’s voice replaced it.
Cold.
Calm.
“You should have listened to your son the first time.””
The call ended.
Claire dropped the phone.
Ethan stared at her.
Because the person who had Noah wasn’t hiding anymore.
They wanted him to know.
They wanted Ethan to hear his son’s fear.
May you like
And on the floor beside Claire’s phone, a new message appeared.
*You have 24 hours before Noah learns the truth about what happened to his mother.*
