Chapter 6: The Voice From The Forgotten Night

Ethan didn’t remember leaving the house.

One second, he was standing in the living room staring at Claire’s phone.

The next, he was outside, running toward his car with his keys clenched so tightly in his hand that his knuckles turned white.

“Noah.””

His son’s voice kept replaying in his mind.

The fear.

The confusion.

The way he had said Claire’s name first.

Not Dad.

Not because he didn’t love him.

Because Noah had been trying to survive.

Sarah followed him outside.

“Ethan!””

He stopped beside the car.

“What?””

“We need to think.””

“My son is with someone who kidnapped him.””

“And if you rush in without knowing where he is, you could make it worse.””

Ethan looked at her.

His eyes were filled with anger.

“I already made it worse once.””

Sarah softened.

“Ethan.””

“I believed someone else over him.””

His voice cracked.

“I watched him beg me not to leave.””

The memory hit him again.

Noah’s tiny hands holding his coat.

His tear-filled eyes.

His last question.

“Are you coming with me?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I’m not losing him again.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Then we find him the right way.””

Behind them, Claire walked outside.

Ethan turned immediately.

“You knew.””

Claire stopped.

“What?””

“You knew someone was watching him.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was trying to protect him.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“By sending him away?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Because there was no defense.

Sarah stepped between them.

“We don’t have time for this.””

Claire looked at her.

“You’re Sarah.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“You remember me.””

“I remember everyone who was close to Laura.””

Ethan noticed the way Claire said it.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Almost like Sarah was a threat.

“Why?””

Ethan looked between them.

“Why does everyone connected to Laura know more than me?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence made him angrier than any confession.

They went back inside.

Claire placed the phone on the table.

“The person who called used a blocked number.””

Sarah picked it up.

“Did Noah say anything else?””

Claire shook her head.

“Only that sentence.””

“Exactly?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“He said, ‘Dad was right about you.’”

Ethan looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Claire swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

“No, Ethan.””

Her voice became desperate.

“I know what it sounds like, but I don’t know what he meant.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Then tell me everything you know.””

Claire sat down.

For the first time since he had known her, she looked completely defeated.

“I met Laura six months before the accident.””

Ethan frowned.

“You knew her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She hired me.””

The room went silent.

“You never told me that.””

“Because Laura asked me not to.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

Claire looked away.

“She didn’t trust people easily.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Claire took a breath.

“Laura was worried about money disappearing from your accounts.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

“She thought someone was accessing financial information.””

“Who?””

Claire looked at him.

“That’s what she was trying to find out.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“And you helped her?””

Claire nodded.

“At first.””

“At first?””

Claire’s eyes filled with regret.

“Then I made a mistake.””

Ethan waited.

“What mistake?””

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“I told someone what Laura was investigating.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know who they were at the time.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“But you know now.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Laura’s brother.””

The room went completely still.

Ethan stared.

“Daniel?””

Claire nodded.

“No.””

Sarah looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

“You knew him?””

Sarah’s face changed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Laura’s family.””

Ethan looked at Sarah.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Sarah didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel wasn’t at the funeral.””

Ethan frowned.

“He was Laura’s brother. Why wouldn’t he be there?””

Sarah looked down.

“Because he disappeared two days before.””

Ethan felt a chill.

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“He knew Laura had discovered something.””

“And you think he caused the accident?””

Claire hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered Ethan.

Because it was honest.

“I think,” Claire continued, “that Daniel knows what happened.””

They spent the next hour searching through old records.

Claire opened a hidden folder on her laptop.

Ethan noticed.

“You had this the whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at him.

“Of exactly what is happening now.””

Inside were emails.

Photos.

Notes.

Laura’s research.

Ethan clicked through them.

Most were about financial transactions.

Unknown accounts.

Missing money.

Then he saw a name.

*Daniel Hart.*

A file opened.

*Possible connection: Insurance changes.*

Ethan stopped.

“What is this?””

Claire looked away.

“Laura suspected Daniel was trying to change the beneficiary on her insurance policy.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“That’s why she was investigating.””

Ethan felt sick.

“How much?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Two million dollars.””

The number sat in the room.

Heavy.

Impossible.

“He wanted her money?””

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

Claire shook her head.

“Laura found something else.””

“What?””

Claire pointed at another file.

A photo.

A blurry image from a security camera.

A man standing outside Laura’s office.

Ethan leaned closer.

He recognized the face.

His stomach dropped.

Because it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone he knew.

Someone who had attended family dinners.

Someone who had hugged Noah.

Someone who had told Ethan he was sorry for his loss.

“Mark.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You know him?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Laura’s lawyer.””

Claire whispered:

“He was working with Daniel.””

The discovery changed everything.

For two years, Ethan had believed Laura’s death was a tragic accident.

Now he wondered if it had been planned.

A knock suddenly came from the front door.

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Were you expecting someone?””

She shook her head.

The knock came again.

Harder.

Sarah whispered:

“Don’t open it.””

Another knock.

Then a voice.

“Ethan?””

His blood ran cold.

He knew that voice.

Mark.

Laura’s lawyer.

The man who had helped them after her death.

The man who had comforted him.

The man who had told him:

“Some things happen for reasons we’ll never understand.””

Ethan slowly walked toward the door.

Claire grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he knows.””

The door handle moved.

Someone outside was trying to open it.

Ethan stepped back.

Then his phone buzzed.

A new message.

From the unknown number.

He opened it.

*Do not let him inside.*

Ethan stared.

A second message appeared.

*He was the last person to see Laura alive.*

The door handle turned again.

And then Mark’s voice came through the wood.

“Ethan, I know where Noah is.””

Everyone froze.

Because outside the door stood the man who might hold the answers.

May you like

Or the man who had destroyed their family.

And Ethan had only seconds to decide whether to open the door.
