Chapter 7: The Man Who Carried Laura’s Last Secret
Ethan stared at the door.
Behind it stood Mark.
The man who had helped him arrange Laura’s funeral.
The man who had sat beside him during the darkest week of his life.
The man who had looked him in the eyes and said, “I’m so sorry, Ethan. She was a wonderful woman.””
Now Ethan wondered if those words had been real.
Or just another performance.
The door handle moved again.
“Ethan,” Mark called from outside.
“I know you’re in there.””
Sarah whispered behind him.
“Don’t open it.””
Claire nodded.
“He’s dangerous.””
Ethan turned toward her.
“You knew he was involved.””
Claire looked away.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
“You think I wanted to believe it?””
Her voice cracked.
“Mark was Laura’s lawyer. He was someone she trusted.””
Ethan looked back at the door.
“And you?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence told him more than words could.
Mark knocked again.
“Ethan, please. We don’t have much time.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Where is my son?””
The house became silent.
For a few seconds, there was no answer.
Then Mark spoke.
“Alive.””
Ethan’s chest tightened.
“Open the door.””
“No.””
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“You first.””
Mark paused.
“Fine.””
Ethan stood near the door but didn’t unlock it.
“Where is Noah?””
“I can take you to him.””
“Why should I trust you?””
A long pause.
Then Mark answered quietly.
“You shouldn’t.””
The honesty surprised Ethan.
“I know what it looks like.””
“It looks like you helped someone destroy my family.””
Mark didn’t deny it.
“That’s because I did.””
Everyone froze.
Claire covered her mouth.
Sarah looked stunned.
Ethan’s hand tightened around the door handle.
“What did you just say?””
Mark’s voice became heavier.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Ethan laughed without humor.
“My wife is dead. My son is missing. And you call that mistakes?””
“I didn’t kill Laura.””
“But you know who did.””
Silence.
A painful silence.
Then Mark said:
“Yes.””
The answer felt worse than any denial.
Ethan stepped away from the door.
Sarah whispered:
“He admitted it.””
Claire looked terrified.
“Ethan, don’t let him manipulate you.””
But Ethan barely heard them.
His entire focus was on the man outside.
“Tell me everything.””
Mark sighed.
“I can’t through a door.””
“Then leave.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because the person who has Noah knows I’m here.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
Mark lowered his voice.
“They’re watching this house.””
A cold feeling moved through Ethan.
“You brought them here?””
“No.””
“Then how did they know?””
No answer.
And that was the worst part.
Because Ethan realized something.
Someone had known every step they took.
Every place they went.
Every conversation they had.
Mark spoke again.
“Ethan, you have to trust me for five minutes.””
Ethan looked at Sarah.
Then Claire.
Neither of them knew what to do.
Finally, Ethan unlocked the door.
But he kept his distance.
Mark entered slowly.
He looked older than Ethan remembered.
His suit was wrinkled.
His face was tired.
Like he hadn’t slept in days.
The moment he saw Claire, his expression changed.
“You’re alive.””
Claire stared.
“What does that mean?””
Mark looked at Ethan.
“She told you everything?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Start talking.””
Mark nodded.
“I owe you that.””
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
Ethan recognized some of them.
Laura’s files.
“You kept them.””
Mark looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Ethan’s anger rose.
“Everyone was afraid.””
Mark accepted the accusation.
“I know.””
“While my son was losing his mother and then his father, everyone was afraid.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
The apology only made Ethan angrier.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Act sorry now.””
Mark looked at him.
“I am sorry.””
“Sorry doesn’t bring Laura back.””
“No.””
His voice became quiet.
“But maybe it can bring Noah back.””
That stopped Ethan.
“Explain.””
Mark opened the folder.
“The night Laura died, she wasn’t driving home from work.””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
“She was meeting someone.””
“Who?””
Mark hesitated.
“Me.””
The room went silent.
Ethan stared.
“You were with her?””
“Not exactly.””
“Then what does that mean?””
Mark looked at the documents.
“Laura called me because she found something.””
“What?””
“A connection between Daniel and someone else.””
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?””
Mark looked at Claire.
Then back at him.
“You.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“Laura thought someone was trying to use your name.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It didn’t to me either.””
Mark pulled out another document.
“A transfer authorization.””
Ethan looked at it.
His own signature was on the page.
But he had never seen the document before.
“This is fake.””
“Yes.””
“Someone forged my signature.””
Mark nodded.
“Exactly.””
Ethan looked up.
“Why?””
“To move money without raising suspicion.””
“How much?””
Mark answered:
“Enough to make it look like you had a reason to hurt Laura.””
The room went cold.
Sarah whispered:
“They were framing him.””
Mark nodded.
“That was the plan.””
Ethan stared at the document.
His whole life had been built around a lie.
But one question remained.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Mark looked away.
“Because I was the one who helped create the lie.””
The confession was quiet.
But devastating.
“What?””
Mark swallowed.
“Daniel pressured me.””
“Why?””
“Because he had proof that I had made illegal changes to client accounts.””
Ethan stared.
“So you helped him.””
“Yes.””
“And Laura found out.””
“Yes.””
“And then she died.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth was finally coming out.
But it didn’t feel like relief.
It felt like another wound opening.
Ethan grabbed the folder.
“Where is Noah?””
Mark reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small piece of paper.
“A location.””
Ethan took it.
But before he could read it, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Mark’s face changed.
“Don’t answer.””
Ethan stared.
“Why?””
“Because they want to know if I told you.””
The phone kept ringing.
Ethan looked at the others.
Then answered.
Nobody spoke.
Only breathing.
Then Noah’s voice.
“Dad?””
Ethan’s entire body went still.
“Noah?””
A small sob came through the phone.
“Dad, I’m scared.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I’m coming for you.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Confusing.
“No?””
Noah whispered:
“Don’t come here.””
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Noah said something that made everyone in the room freeze.
“Because the person keeping me here…”
His voice trembled.
“…is someone you told me I could always trust.””
The call ended.
Ethan stared at the phone.
Slowly, he looked up.
At Claire.
At Mark.
At Sarah.
Because Noah had just revealed the most terrifying truth yet.
May you like
The person who took him wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone inside their family.
