Chapter 4: The Secret Behind His Mother’s Death
Ethan stood frozen in the hallway.
The notebook shook slightly in his hand.
He read the sentence again.
And again.
*“Dad, I heard Claire talking to someone on the phone. She said she knows what happened to Mom.””*
For two years, Ethan had lived with one painful truth.
His wife, Laura, was gone.
A rainy night.
A car accident.
A phone call from the hospital that changed his entire world.
The doctors told him there was nothing anyone could have done.
The police report said the road was slippery.
The investigation was closed.
Everyone told him to accept it.
But now his eight-year-old son had written something that made the past come rushing back.
Claire knew something.
Something she had never told him.
His phone buzzed.
*Unknown Number: Do you understand now why Noah was afraid?*
Ethan looked at the screen.
His fingers moved slowly.
*Who are you?*
The reply came.
*Someone who promised Laura I would protect Noah.*
Ethan stopped.
Laura.
Nobody said her name anymore.
Not like that.
Not with a promise attached.
His chest tightened.
*How do you know my wife?*
A few seconds passed.
Then:
*Meet me tomorrow. Alone. I’ll tell you what happened the night Laura died.*
Ethan stared at the message.
A part of him wanted to throw the phone away.
Because some truths were too painful to uncover.
But another part of him—the part that had watched Noah cry at a train station—knew he couldn’t ignore this.
Not again.
He had ignored Noah once.
He would never do it twice.
The next morning, Ethan drove to the small coffee shop mentioned in the message.
It was on the edge of town.
Quiet.
Almost empty.
He arrived early.
He didn’t know if that was because he was nervous or because he was desperate for answers.
Five minutes later, a woman walked in.
Ethan recognized her immediately.
Not because he knew her well.
Because he had seen her before.
At Laura’s funeral.
She had stood in the back.
She had cried harder than some family members.
“Ethan?””
He stood slowly.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked around before sitting down.
“My name is Sarah Mitchell.””
Ethan searched his memory.
Then he remembered.
Laura’s coworker.
They had met only a few times.
“What does Laura have to do with this?””
Sarah looked at him sadly.
“She tried to tell you.””
Ethan frowned.
“Tell me what?””
“That Claire wasn’t who she pretended to be.””
The words landed heavily.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Sarah looked surprised.
“You still don’t believe it?””
“I believe my wife loved me.””
“She did.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Sarah lowered her eyes.
“Because she was scared.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Scared of what?””
Sarah reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because Laura asked me to.””
Ethan stared at it.
“Why?””
“Because she said if anything happened to her, you needed to see it.””
His hands went cold.
“You had this for two years?””
Sarah looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Not even me?””
Sarah hesitated.
“That’s the part you need to understand.””
She pushed the envelope toward him.
“Laura didn’t think you were involved.””
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
His wife’s.
The sight of it almost broke him.
He hadn’t seen her handwriting in years.
He unfolded the paper.
*Ethan,*
*If you are reading this, something happened that I was afraid of.*
His breathing became uneven.
*I need you to listen carefully. Claire has been lying to us.*
Ethan stopped.
Sarah watched his reaction.
He continued reading.
*She told me she wanted to help our family. She said she understood what it felt like to lose someone. I believed her.*
*I was wrong.*
Ethan’s eyes moved faster.
*She has been asking questions about my insurance, my savings, and what would happen to Noah if something happened to me.*
The paper trembled.
Laura had never been paranoid.
Never.
She was careful.
Thoughtful.
The kind of person who noticed when Ethan was tired before he admitted it.
*I confronted her. She denied everything. But after that day, things changed.*
*She started acting like I was a threat.*
Ethan swallowed.
Then he reached the next line.
*Ethan, please protect Noah. Claire cannot be allowed to raise him alone.*
The room felt smaller.
The noise of the coffee shop disappeared.
“You’re saying Claire caused the accident?””
Sarah shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Ethan looked up.
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Laura was investigating Claire before she died.””
“Investigating?””
Sarah nodded.
“Laura found financial records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Transfers.””
Ethan stared.
“From where?””
Sarah took a breath.
“From an account connected to Claire’s family.””
Ethan felt anger rising.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me this?””
“Because the evidence disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
Sarah looked at him.
“After Laura died, her laptop was gone.””
Ethan froze.
Her laptop.
He remembered.
The police had asked about it.
They said they assumed it was lost in the accident.
At the time, he was grieving too much to question anything.
But now…
Now every unanswered question came back.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“Because yesterday I saw Noah at the station.””
Ethan looked down.
“And?””
“I saw the way he looked at you.””
Her voice softened.
“He wasn’t angry.””
Ethan’s eyes burned.
“He was scared.””
Sarah nodded.
“He looked exactly like Laura did before she died.””
Silence.
Ethan folded the letter carefully.
“Where is Noah?””
Sarah looked surprised.
“You don’t know?””
“He was sent to his aunt.””
“Which aunt?””
Ethan hesitated.
He didn’t know.
That realization hit him harder than anything else.
He didn’t even know where his own son was.
Sarah saw his face.
“Ethan…”
“I trusted her.””
His voice cracked.
“I trusted Claire.””
Sarah didn’t say anything.
Because there was nothing to say.
Ethan stood.
“I need to find my son.””
As he reached the door, his phone rang.
The name on the screen made his blood run cold.
Claire.
He answered.
“What?””
There was silence.
Then her voice.
But it wasn’t angry.
It wasn’t confident.
She sounded frightened.
“Ethan…”
He said nothing.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because I know what you found.””
His grip tightened around the phone.
“What did you just say?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“I know about the messages.””
Ethan looked at Sarah.
“How?””
Another silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Because I know who sent them.””
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Her answer came quietly.
And it changed everything.
“The person who was with Laura the night she died.””
The line went silent.
Ethan couldn’t move.
Because if Claire was telling the truth…
Then the person trying to expose her wasn’t just a witness.
They were someone connected to the biggest tragedy of his life.
Someone who had been hiding for two years.
Someone who knew exactly what happened to Laura.

And before Ethan could ask another question, Claire said one final sentence:
“Ethan… you need to find Noah before they do.””
