Chapter 9: The Woman in the Dark

Marcus spun around.

“Who’s there?””

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Then Noah screamed from upstairs.

“Daddy!””

Marcus ran.

His shoulder slammed into the basement door as he burst into the hallway.

The emergency lights had come on, casting the house in a dim amber glow.

Vanessa was already halfway up the stairs.

Daniel followed.

“Emma!”” Marcus shouted.

He reached the nursery first.

The crib was empty.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“No.””

He searched the room.

The blanket was on the floor.

The window was still locked.

The nursery door was open.

No baby.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

“Emma!””

Behind him, Vanessa screamed.

“She’s gone!””

Marcus turned.

“Noah?””

The boy was standing in the hallway, frozen.

He pointed toward the guest room.

“Someone took her.””

Marcus ran.

The guest room door stood open.

The curtains were moving.

The hidden camera was gone from the nightstand.

Marcus checked beneath the bed.

Empty.

Bathroom.

Empty.

Closet.

Empty.

Then he saw the window.

It was open.

His stomach dropped.

“You said it was locked,” Daniel said behind him.

Marcus turned.

“It was.””

Daniel crossed the room.

He examined the latch.

“It was opened from inside.””

Marcus stared.

“From inside?””

Daniel nodded.

“There’s no forced entry.””

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her face was white.

Marcus turned on her.

“Where is my daughter?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't say that.””

“I don't!””

“You know this house better than anyone.””

“I swear—”

Marcus grabbed her shoulders.

“Where is Emma?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I don't know!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Marcus.””

“Get away from me.””

“She may know something.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Then talk.””

Vanessa looked toward the open window.

“She has a key.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with terror.

“Claire.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Claire is dead.””

“I know.””

“Then stop saying her name.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She had a key to this house.””

“What are you talking about?”” Marcus demanded.

“Your mother gave it to her.””

“My mother never met Claire.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“She did.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Where?””

“Here.””

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

Daniel stepped back.

“My father told me your mother never knew Claire.””

“He lied.””

Marcus looked between them.

“How did Claire get into this house?””

Vanessa whispered, “Through the basement.””

Marcus remembered the voice.

The impossible voice.

The darkness.

The whisper against his ear.

He looked toward the staircase.

“There's another entrance.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Behind the shelves.””

Marcus ran downstairs.

Daniel followed.

Vanessa came last.

The basement was still dark except for the emergency light.

Marcus grabbed a flashlight from a shelf and swept the beam across the walls.

Boxes.

Cabinets.

Old photographs.

Then Daniel pointed.

“The shelves.””

Marcus moved the nearest bookcase.

It scraped across the floor.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

Marcus stared.

“How long has that been there?””

Vanessa whispered, “Since the house was built.””

“Open it.””

“I don't have the key.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You said Claire had a key.””

“I don't have it.””

Daniel searched beneath a loose floorboard.

His fingers closed around something metallic.

He pulled out a key.

Marcus took it.

The door opened.

A narrow passage disappeared into darkness.

Fresh footprints marked the dusty floor.

Marcus's pulse raced.

“She came through here.””

Daniel nodded.

“Recently.””

Marcus entered.

The passage smelled like earth and old wood.

It sloped upward.

They reached another door.

Marcus opened it.

They emerged behind the garage.

Rain tapped softly against the roof.

No one was there.

But something lay on the ground.

A pink baby blanket.

Marcus picked it up.

Emma's.

There was a note pinned to it.

He opened it.

*You are almost ready to hear the truth.*

He read the next line.

*Take Daniel to the old house. Come alone.*

Daniel stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Marcus handed him the note.

Daniel read it.

“It's a trap.””

“I know.””

“But you're going.””

“Yes.””

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“She took your daughter.””

“She may be expecting me.””

“That makes it more dangerous.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You said she's your daughter.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“If she is.””

“You just saw the test.””

“Yes.””

“Then you're coming.””

Vanessa grabbed Marcus's arm.

“No.””

He turned.

“Why?””

“Because that's what she wants.””

“Who?””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

“She wants Daniel.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because he knows where Claire's body is.””

Daniel looked at her sharply.

“You said Claire was buried.””

“She was.””

“Where?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Claire wasn't buried.””

Silence.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

“She disappeared after the hospital.””

“You told me she died.””

“She did.””

“Then where is her body?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You lied to me.””

“I was protecting the children.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Enough.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the old house?””

She hesitated.

“Twenty minutes from here.””

“Take me.””

“No.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“Take me.””

They left the house.

Daniel drove.

Vanessa sat in the passenger seat.

Marcus remained in the back, gripping the blanket Emma had been wrapped in.

Noah sat beside him.

Marcus had refused to leave him alone.

Rain streaked the windows.

No one spoke for several minutes.

Then Noah whispered, “Daddy?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

Marcus's heart broke.

“No.””

“Even if I'm not really your son?””

Marcus pulled him closer.

“You are my son.””

“But the paper said—”

“I don't care what the paper says.””

Noah stared at him.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

Daniel glanced at them through the mirror.

“Blood doesn't decide family.””

Marcus met his eyes.

“Then help me bring Emma home.””

Daniel nodded.

The road narrowed.

Trees swallowed the headlights.

Finally, the old house appeared beyond a rusted iron gate.

It looked abandoned.

Windows broken.

Paint peeling.

Marcus stared at it.

“This is where it happened?””

Vanessa nodded.

They stepped inside.

The house smelled of mildew and dust.

Every floorboard creaked.

Daniel carried a flashlight.

Vanessa walked ahead.

Marcus followed with Noah.

Then he heard something.

A baby crying.

Emma.

Marcus ran toward the sound.

“Emma!””

He entered an old bedroom.

Empty.

The cry stopped.

A voice spoke from behind him.

“You shouldn't have brought Noah.””

Marcus turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Dark coat.

Wet hair.

Her face was pale.

Marcus stared.

He had never seen her before.

But Daniel had.

He whispered one word.

“Claire.””

Vanessa began shaking.

The woman looked at her.

“You promised me.””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus stared at the woman.

“You're alive.””

Claire's eyes moved toward Noah.

Then to Marcus.

“I was never dead.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Emma?””

Claire looked at him.

“Safe.””

“Give her to me.””

“No.””

Marcus moved forward.

“She's my daughter.””

Claire looked at him.

“Is she?””

Marcus froze.

Claire slowly pulled an old document from her coat.

“Your mother changed more than one record.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes widened.

The document showed the original birth records.

Not one child.

Three.

His mother's name appeared as an emergency contact.

Claire's name appeared beside two infants.

And the third line made Marcus's blood freeze.

*Infant transferred before registration.*

Marcus looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Claire's voice was quiet.

“It means you were never raising two children.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“Three?””

Claire nodded.

“One died.””

Marcus swallowed.

“And the other?””

Claire looked directly at Noah.

“He survived.””

Marcus's arm tightened around the boy.

“Then Emma?””

Claire's expression softened.

“Emma isn't the missing child.””

Marcus stared.

“Then who is?””

Claire reached into her coat.

She pulled out a photograph.

Three newborn babies.

Three blankets.

Three tiny faces.

Marcus looked at the third infant.

Then at Noah.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Claire whispered:

“The third baby was taken before anyone could register her.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“Who took her?””

Claire looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus's voice shook.

“Who?””

Claire answered.

“Your mother.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“No.””

Claire stepped toward her.

“She took the girl because she knew exactly who she was.””

Marcus looked down at the photograph again.

The baby girl had a tiny crescent mark on her wrist.

The same mark Noah carried.

His stomach dropped.

“Why would my mother take her?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Because that child wasn't just mine.””

Daniel stared.

“Whose was she?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

“She belonged to all three of you in ways none of you ever understood.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door slammed.

Claire's face changed.

“She found us.””

Marcus turned.

“Who?””

Claire grabbed his arm.

“The woman who has been sending you the messages.””

Marcus looked toward the dark hallway.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A familiar voice called from the shadows.

“Marcus.””

He froze.

The voice belonged to his mother.

Claire whispered:

“She didn't die.””

May you like

The footsteps stopped outside the room.

Then the door began to open.
