Chapter 7: The Baby in the Photograph

Marcus stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Two newborns.

Two blankets.

Two tiny faces.

And one room he had never seen before.

His thumb trembled against the screen.

“No,” he whispered.

The message remained beneath the photograph.

*You have been raising the wrong baby for six years.*

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel's expression had changed completely.

Marcus looked at him.

“Is this real?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You took this?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Everyone keeps saying they don't know.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“You changed Noah's birth records?””

She couldn't meet his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I was trying to protect him.””

“From what?””

“From the truth.””

Marcus looked down at Noah.

The boy was still pressed against his side, clutching the stuffed dinosaur so tightly that its fabric was wrinkled beneath his fingers.

Marcus knelt.

“Noah.””

The boy looked up.

“Am I your son?””

The question broke something in the room.

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel looked away.

Noah stared at Marcus as though he didn't understand why anyone would ask.

“Of course.””

Marcus swallowed.

“No matter what anyone says?””

Noah nodded.

“You're my daddy.””

Marcus pulled him into his arms.

For several seconds, nothing else mattered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“That's exactly why I never told you.””

Marcus lifted his head.

“Never told me what?””

“That blood isn't the only thing that makes someone a father.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Don't give me some speech.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm not.””

He looked at Noah.

“I wanted him safe.””

Marcus stood.

“You don't get to say you wanted him safe after showing up in my house in the middle of the night.””

“I didn't come for Noah.””

“You came for Emma.””

“I came because Vanessa broke our agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“She promised me she would tell you the truth before Emma was born.””

Vanessa whispered, “I couldn't.””

“You had years.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“You already lied about Noah.””

Vanessa flinched.

“And now there are two babies in this story?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“Which one is Emma?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The baby in the pink blanket.””

“And Noah?””

“The blue.””

Marcus's breath caught.

“But that's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Noah is six.””

“Yes.””

“And Emma is four months old.””

“Yes.””

Marcus pointed at the photograph.

“So these children weren't born together.””

Daniel shook his head.

“They were.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You said Claire died years ago.””

“She did.””

“Then these aren't Claire's babies.””

“They were.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Claire gave birth that night.””

Marcus felt dizzy.

“You told me she died years ago.””

“I meant she had been presumed dead.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That was the story we used.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Used by whom?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“By your mother.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“My mother?””

“She found Claire after the delivery.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Claire was bleeding.””

“And the babies?””

“One was dying.””

Marcus looked toward Noah.

“Which one?””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Noah.””

Marcus's heart pounded.

“He survived.””

“Barely.””

“Then why did you separate them?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“We didn't.””

Marcus frowned.

“You just said—”

“I didn't know which child was which.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

“The room was dark. Claire was unconscious. There were people everywhere.””

“Who?””

“Your mother's driver. A nurse. Claire. Me.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I was outside.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You weren't supposed to be there.””

“I arrived after.””

Marcus raised his voice.

“Stop.””

Both of them fell silent.

“I need one version,” Marcus said.

“One. No more half-truths.””

He pointed to the photograph.

“Start with that night.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Claire gave birth at the old house.””

Marcus listened.

“She had twins. A boy and a girl.””

“Why wasn't she in a hospital?””

“She was hiding.””

“From whom?””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

“His father.””

Marcus frowned.

“Daniel's father?””

Daniel's face darkened.

“He was violent.””

Vanessa continued.

“Claire didn't trust anyone. She believed he would take the children.””

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

“So the old house became a secret delivery.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew.””

“Yes.””

“And somehow Noah ended up with me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“But I didn't bring him to you.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Then who did?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door creaked.

Everyone looked up.

Noah grabbed Marcus's hand.

“Daddy.””

Marcus squeezed his fingers.

“It's okay.””

Daniel suddenly moved toward the staircase.

Marcus blocked him.

“Stay here.””

“I heard that.””

“Stay here.””

A second creak came from upstairs.

Then a soft thump.

Emma began crying from the nursery.

Marcus turned.

Vanessa gasped.

“I left her crib light on.””

He ran upstairs.

The nursery door was open wider than before.

Marcus rushed inside.

Emma was crying.

Her blanket had been pulled halfway off.

The window remained locked.

But something was on the floor.

A small white envelope.

Marcus picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

*MARCUS*

His hands went cold.

He opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

He read the first line.

*Your mother knew which twin was which.*

Marcus froze.

The letter continued.

*She told Vanessa to take the boy and leave the girl.*

His eyes moved rapidly.

*She believed the boy belonged to Daniel and the girl belonged to Marcus.*

Marcus stopped.

He read the line again.

His pulse hammered.

A floorboard creaked behind him.

He turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

“Don't read the rest.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

“I didn't know your mother had decided which baby belonged to whom.””

Marcus held up the letter.

“Then who does Emma belong to?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Look at me.””

She did.

“Who is Emma's biological father?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I don't know.””

“You've had four months to know.””

“I was terrified to test her.””

“Why?””

“Because the result would change everything.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everything already changed.””

He turned toward Emma.

Her crying softened.

Marcus lifted her carefully.

She clung to his shirt.

He looked at her tiny face.

Then at Noah.

Two children.

One photograph.

One secret.

A lifetime of lies.

He went downstairs.

Daniel was waiting.

Marcus held up the letter.

“Did your father have anything to do with the babies?””

Daniel's expression became hard.

“He wanted them gone.””

“Gone where?””

“Anywhere that wasn't with Claire.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed one of them was his.””

Marcus looked at him.

“One?””

“Yes.””

“Which one?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The boy.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“And the girl?””

Daniel shook his head.

“That is where the story changes.””

“What do you mean?””

“Your mother believed the girl was yours.””

Marcus looked down at Emma.

Daniel continued.

“She made Vanessa sign a document saying she had given birth to her.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“But Vanessa did give birth.””

“Yes.””

“Then why sign anything?””

“Because your mother threatened to expose Claire.””

Marcus stared.

“To whom?””

“Everyone.””

Marcus felt sick.

“So Emma might actually be my daughter.””

“She might.””

“Might?””

Daniel looked toward the front door.

“That is why I came.””

Marcus followed his gaze.

“What are you talking about?””

“Because someone has been trying to find the girl.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“The same person who sent those messages.””

Marcus's phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

*Do not trust Daniel.*

Marcus looked at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*Do not trust Vanessa.*

Then:

*The only person you can trust is already inside the house.*

Marcus slowly looked around.

Daniel stood near the staircase.

Vanessa stood beside the couch.

Noah was beside Marcus.

Emma was in his arms.

Four people.

One house.

One liar.

Then Marcus heard something.

A faint metallic click from the basement.

He looked toward the closed door.

Daniel's face changed.

“What?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Did you hear that?””

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa whispered, “Don't go down there.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because it's locked.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why is the basement locked?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Marcus…”

He walked toward the door.

Daniel followed.

Marcus grabbed the handle.

Locked.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Where's the key?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa.””

“I lost it.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then his phone lit up again.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the basement.

A person was standing inside.

Holding a second photograph of the twins.

Marcus's blood turned cold.

The message underneath read:

*One of your children is in this house because of a mistake.*

Then another line appeared.

*The other one is here because someone planned it.*

From behind the basement door came a woman's voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

And impossible.

“Marcus?””

He froze.

Vanessa's face crumpled.

Daniel stepped backward.

Noah whispered, “Daddy… who's that?””

Marcus stared at the door.

The voice came again.

“Marcus, please.””

He knew that voice.

He had heard it his entire childhood.

His mother's voice.

But his mother had been dead for two years.

And someone was now standing on the other side of the locked basement door.
