Chapter 8: The Voice Behind the Locked Door
“Marcus, please.””
The voice came through the basement door again.
Soft.
Shaking.
Familiar.
Marcus couldn't move.
He knew that voice.
Not from memory.
Not from an old recording.
He knew it because it belonged to the woman who had raised him.
His mother.
The woman who had been buried twenty-six months ago.
“No,” he whispered.
Beside him, Daniel looked just as stunned.
Vanessa had collapsed against the wall.
“Noah,” she said, barely audible, “come here.””
The boy didn't move.
He clung to Marcus.
“Daddy, that's Grandma.””
Marcus stared at the basement door.
“Noah,” he said quietly, “stay behind me.””
“Marcus.””
The voice came again.
“Open the door.””
His chest tightened.
Every instinct told him to run.
Another part of him needed to know.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“You said you lost the key.””
She nodded weakly.
“Then how is someone inside?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel suddenly pointed toward the floor.
“There.””
A small brass key sat near the baseboard.
Marcus stared at it.
It hadn't been there moments earlier.
Or maybe he'd been too distracted to notice.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't touch it.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever put it there wants you to.””
The basement voice became louder.
“Marcus, she's coming.””
He froze.
“Who?””
There was no answer.
Then something struck the other side of the door.
Bang.
Noah jumped.
Emma started crying upstairs.
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Vanessa whispered, “Go get her.””
He turned to Daniel.
“Stay with Noah.””
Daniel nodded.
Marcus ran upstairs.
The nursery door was open.
Emma was crying in her crib, her little legs kicking beneath the blanket.
Marcus lifted her.
She immediately quieted against his chest.
Then he saw something on the floor.
Another envelope.
He picked it up.
The front said:
*FOR MARCUS — READ THIS BEFORE YOU OPEN THE BASEMENT.*
He ripped it open.
Inside was a single page.
*Your mother is not alive.*
Marcus swallowed.
Below it:
*But she left someone behind.*
His eyes moved lower.
*The woman in the basement knows why Noah and Emma were separated. She knows which child was meant to disappear.*
Marcus stared at the final line.
*And she knows what Vanessa did after Claire died.*
He ran downstairs.
Vanessa was still near the wall.
Daniel stood between her and the basement.
Marcus held up the letter.
“What did you do after Claire died?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I buried her.””
Daniel's head snapped toward her.
“You said she was alive.””
“She was barely breathing.””
“You told me she escaped.””
“She didn't.””
Marcus stared.
“Stop.””
They both looked at him.
“I want the truth.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“She told you Claire died years ago.””
“She lied,” Marcus said.
“Yes.””
“And you lied too.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?””
Vanessa sank to the floor.
“The night Claire gave birth, your mother arrived.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What did she want?””
“The babies.””
“Why?””
“She believed one of them belonged to your family.””
“Which one?””
“The girl.””
Marcus glanced toward Emma's room upstairs.
Vanessa continued.
“She took Emma.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She took her.””
“Then who was the boy?””
“Noah.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“You told me Noah died.””
“I thought he did.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You thought?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother told me the boy was sick. She said he wouldn't survive.””
“So what did she do?””
“She told me to leave him.””
Marcus's voice became cold.
“And you did?””
“I was terrified.””
“You left a newborn baby?””
“I came back.””
“When?””
“Before sunrise.””
“And?””
“He was gone.””
Marcus stared.
“Who took him?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel whispered, “I do.””
Marcus turned.
Daniel's face was pale.
“My father.””
Silence.
“Your father took Noah?””
“He took the boy because he wanted leverage over Claire.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would he care about a newborn?””
“Because Claire had something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the basement.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That my father had been paying people to alter medical records.””
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
“Why?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“He had been involved in an adoption network.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“You said you didn't know.””
“I didn't know about the network.””
“But you knew babies were being moved.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I knew something wasn't right.””
“And you stayed?””
“I was trying to save Claire.””
“You saved yourself.””
Her face broke.
“I was twenty-four years old.””
“And Noah was a newborn.””
“I know.””
The words echoed.
Marcus looked toward the basement.
“Who's down there?””
Nobody answered.
Then the voice came again.
“Marcus.””
He stepped toward the door.
The voice was softer now.
“Your mother knew.””
His skin prickled.
He looked at Daniel.
“You said my mother was involved.””
“She was.””
“With the adoption network?””
Daniel nodded.
Marcus stared at the door.
The lock was still closed.
He picked up the brass key.
Daniel grabbed his wrist.
“Wait.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You said your father took Noah.””
“Yes.””
“Then why is someone using my mother's voice?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I don't know.””
Marcus pulled free.
“Exactly.””
He inserted the key.
The lock turned.
The basement door opened an inch.
Cold air spilled into the hallway.
Vanessa began crying.
“Marcus, don't.””
He opened it wider.
The basement was dark.
A single light burned at the bottom of the stairs.
No movement.
Then the voice came.
“Come down.””
Marcus started down.
Daniel followed.
Vanessa stayed behind.
“I'm not leaving her alone,” she whispered.
Marcus looked back.
“Then come.””
She hesitated.
Then followed.
The basement smelled of dust and damp wood.
Boxes lined the walls.
Old furniture covered in sheets.
An unused freezer.
And at the center of the room was a wooden table.
Someone had placed three things on it.
A photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
And a thick brown envelope.
Marcus approached.
The hospital bracelet was tiny.
*BABY BOY — NO NAME*
The photograph showed Claire.
She was sitting on the same chair from the old family house.
Her face was bruised.
She was holding two newborns.
Marcus looked at the babies.
The same babies from the mysterious photograph.
He turned the picture over.
There were words written on the back.
*Don't trust the woman who says she saved them.*
Marcus slowly looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“I didn't write that.””
Daniel reached for the envelope.
Marcus stopped him.
“I'll open it.””
Inside were birth records.
Dozens.
Names.
Dates.
Hospital stamps.
Several pages had been crossed out.
One file had Marcus's name on it.
His hands shook as he opened it.
*Marcus Hale — emergency contact.*
He turned the page.
There was another name.
*Claire Mercer — biological mother.*
Marcus stared.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Marcus handed him the paper.
Daniel read it.
His face drained of color.
“No.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“What?””
Marcus looked at her.
“This says Claire is my biological mother.””
The basement went silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“She wasn't.””
“Then why is your name here?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus flipped through the pages.
There was a second document.
A genetic test.
Three names.
Claire Mercer.
Marcus Hale.
Noah Hale.
*MATCH: 99.98%.*
Marcus stopped breathing.
Daniel took the paper.
His hands began to shake.
“Noah is Claire's son.””
Marcus whispered, “That means he's…”
“Your brother.””
The word seemed impossible.
Marcus looked upstairs.
Six years.
Six years of raising a child he had thought was his son.
And now the evidence said Noah was his half-brother.
He stumbled backward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at another page.
“There's more.””
Marcus took it.
The result for Emma.
*Claire Mercer — biological mother: excluded.*
Marcus's eyes widened.
“Emma isn't Claire's.””
Vanessa covered her face.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Then whose daughter is she?””
“I don't know.””
“Stop saying that!””
His voice echoed through the basement.
“You know something.””
“I know she wasn't supposed to be born.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“The pregnancy wasn't supposed to happen.””
“Why?””
“Because your mother had arranged for the girl to disappear.””
Marcus stared.
“Why would she do that?””
“Because she knew what the girl was.””
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not who.””
“Then what?””
She pointed toward the envelope.
“Read the last page.””
Marcus pulled it out.
His eyes moved down the document.
Then stopped.
At the bottom was a name.
*Father: Daniel Mercer.*
Marcus looked up.
Daniel was staring back.
“No,” he whispered.
Marcus held up the paper.
“It says Emma is your daughter.””
Daniel didn't move.
Vanessa began shaking.
Then the basement lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
Emma screamed upstairs.
Noah shouted.
And from behind Marcus came a whisper.
Not from the speakers.
Not from a recording.
A real voice.
May you like
Right against his ear.
“You finally found me.””
