Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Door
The lock clicked again.
Marcus grabbed Noah and pulled him behind his legs.
Vanessa stood perfectly still.
No scream.
No question.
No instinctive move toward the baby.
She simply stared toward the staircase as if she already knew exactly who was downstairs.
Marcus noticed.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa's lips moved.
No sound came out.
“Vanessa.””
A heavy step creaked on the first stair.
Marcus reached for the nursery door and pushed it almost closed.
“Stay here.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He can't see you.””
“Who?””
Another step.
Then another.
Marcus looked at Noah.
“Go into the closet.””
Noah's eyes widened.
“Daddy—”
“Now.””
“I don't want to.””
“Trust me.””
Noah slipped into the closet.
Marcus moved in front of the crib.
Emma was crying again, her little fists opening and closing.
Vanessa whispered, “Don't let him take her.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel.””
A shadow crossed the gap beneath the nursery door.
Marcus's pulse thundered.
He lowered his voice.
“Is Daniel here?””
Vanessa nodded.
The doorknob moved.
Once.
Twice.
Marcus stepped back.
The door opened slowly.
A man stood in the hallway.
Late forties, perhaps.
Dark jacket.
Wet hair.
No umbrella.
His eyes moved first to Marcus.
Then to Vanessa.
Then to the crib.
His face was strangely calm.
“Vanessa,” he said.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man didn't answer.
He looked at the baby.
“That's her.””
Marcus's hand tightened into a fist.
“Don't come any closer.””
The man's eyes shifted toward him.
“You finally figured it out.””
“Figured what out?””
“That your wife has been lying to you.””
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel.””
The man's expression barely changed.
“So she told you my name.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Are you Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“What's your full name?””
“Daniel Mercer.””
Marcus felt a strange jolt.
The name meant nothing.
But the way Vanessa reacted told him it mattered.
Daniel looked at the ceiling camera.
“You found that one too.””
Marcus immediately moved between him and the crib.
“What do you want?””
“My daughter.””
Emma suddenly stopped crying.
Daniel stared at her.
Marcus shook his head.
“She's not your daughter.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“You still believe everything Vanessa tells you?””
“She is my daughter.””
“You have a blood test?””
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“I gave Vanessa nine months to tell you.””
Vanessa whispered, “You promised you would leave us alone.””
“I promised to leave you alone if you told the truth.””
“I didn't know.””
“You knew enough.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel answered before she could.
“Ask her about the hospital.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus's voice sharpened.
“Tell me.””
Daniel stepped into the nursery.
Marcus blocked him.
“Stay back.””
Daniel stopped.
“You should ask her why Emma's birth records were changed.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately raised a hand.
“Slowly.””
Daniel pulled out a folded document.
He held it between two fingers.
“A copy.””
Marcus didn't take it.
“Put it on the floor.””
Daniel did.
Then he stepped back.
Marcus picked it up.
The document carried the hospital's name.
He scanned it.
Mother: Vanessa Hale.
Father: Marcus Hale.
Female infant.
Birth date.
Everything appeared normal.
Then he saw a second line.
*Original record amended.*
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
The original father's name had been blacked out.
Underneath was a handwritten notation.
*Parentage under review.*
He looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She said nothing.
Daniel folded his arms.
“Ask your wife.””
Marcus's voice shook.
“Vanessa.””
“I didn't change it.””
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“She always says that.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“You disappeared.””
“You told me to.””
“You threatened me.””
“I asked you to tell the truth.””
“You said you'd ruin my life.””
“I said I'd expose what happened.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What happened?””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“Claire happened.””
Vanessa looked down.
Marcus felt a chill.
“What does my mother have to do with Claire?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Everything.””
A tiny cry came from the closet.
Noah.
Marcus glanced toward the door.
Daniel heard it.
His head turned.
“Is that Noah?””
Marcus's body went rigid.
“You know my son?””
Daniel looked strangely sad.
“I know exactly who he is.””
Vanessa whispered, “Please.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You told me he was mine.””
Marcus froze.
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
Daniel continued.
“Then you changed your story.””
Marcus turned slowly toward Vanessa.
“Is Noah Daniel's son?””
“No.””
Daniel said, “Yes.””
Vanessa said, “No.””
Marcus looked at both of them.
Emma began crying again.
Noah's voice came from the closet.
“Daddy?””
Marcus almost broke.
He opened the closet and pulled Noah out.
The boy pressed against him.
Daniel stared at Noah's face.
Then his eyes moved to the child's wrist.
The birthmark.
His expression changed.
Marcus saw it.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You've seen that before,” Marcus said.
Daniel nodded.
“On Claire.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don't talk about her.””
Daniel ignored her.
“She had the same mark.””
Marcus looked at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
“Are you saying Noah is related to Claire?””
“I'm saying the mark runs in the family.””
Marcus's mind raced.
The hidden camera.
The messages.
The hospital record.
Claire.
Daniel.
Noah.
Emma.
There were too many pieces.
And none of them fit.
Then Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then ask Vanessa why she went to the old house the night before Emma was born.””
Vanessa's face collapsed.
Marcus stared at her.
“What happened at the old house?””
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
“You said Claire was dead.””
“She is.””
“Then what happened there?””
Daniel answered.
“Vanessa found Claire's box.””
Marcus turned to him.
“And what's inside?””
“Something that proves Emma's identity.””
Vanessa whispered, “No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What is inside?””
She began to cry.
“Letters.””
“From Claire?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
“About the babies.””
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“The babies?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was pregnant.””
Daniel corrected her.
“She was pregnant with twins.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Twins?””
“One survived.””
Marcus turned to Vanessa.
“What happened to the other?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I don't know.””
Daniel's voice became colder.
“You do.””
“No.””
“You were there.””
“No.””
“You took the baby.””
Marcus's heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“I was trying to save her.””
“Save who?””
“Claire.””
“What happened to the baby?””
Vanessa backed against the wall.
“I didn't take Emma.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I didn't say Emma.””
Silence.
Marcus felt every muscle in his body tense.
Daniel looked at him.
“That wasn't the baby I meant.””
Marcus's blood ran cold.
“Then who?””
Daniel's eyes moved toward Noah.
“The baby Vanessa took was Noah.””
Noah buried his face against Marcus's chest.
Marcus couldn't speak.
Vanessa started sobbing.
“No. No, that's not how it happened.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then tell me how it happened.””
“I found him.””
“Where?””
“At the old house.””
“Why?””
“Because Claire was dying.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“She wasn't dying.””
“She was bleeding.””
“You left her.””
“I had Emma!””
Daniel flinched.
Marcus stared.
“Wait.””
He looked between them.
“You said Emma was involved.””
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“Claire had two babies.””
Daniel said nothing.
“One was Emma,” Vanessa whispered.
“The other was Noah.””
Marcus's head spun.
“But Noah was born to me.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I changed the records.””
“Why?””
“To protect them.””
“From whom?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“From the person who started all of this.””
The phone in Marcus's hand buzzed.
All three adults looked at it.
A new message appeared.
*Daniel is lying.*
Marcus stared.
Another message arrived.
*Vanessa is lying too.*
Then a photograph loaded.
It showed two newborn babies wrapped in identical hospital blankets.
One blanket had a pink tag.
The other had a blue tag.
The photograph was dated the night Emma was born.
Marcus's breath caught.
The blue-tagged baby had a tiny crescent-shaped mark on his wrist.
Noah.
But the photograph had not been taken at the hospital where Marcus believed Emma was born.
It had been taken somewhere else.
Somewhere unfamiliar.
And on the back wall of the photograph was a sign Marcus recognized immediately.
The old family house.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*You have been raising the wrong baby for six years.*
