Chapter 3: The Bottle in Her Pocket
Marcus caught Vanessa's wrist before she could reach the phone.
“Don't.””
She froze.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
The hallway camera was still playing on the screen behind Marcus.
Vanessa standing alone.
The little plastic bottle disappearing into her pocket.
Noah's fingers were wrapped tightly around Marcus's hand.
“That’s Mommy’s medicine,” Noah whispered.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Go to your room.””
“No.””
“Noah,” Marcus said quietly, “stay with me.””
Vanessa pulled against Marcus's grip.
“Let go.””
“Tell me what that bottle is.””
“It’s nothing.””
“You said you didn’t know what I was talking about.””
“I don't.””
“You've changed your answer three times.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You're hurting me.””
Marcus immediately released her.
She stepped backward and rubbed her wrist.
Noah flinched.
Marcus saw it.
The tiny movement.
The way his son had stepped behind him again.
Vanessa noticed too.
“Oh, God,” she whispered.
“Look at him.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
“He’s afraid of me.””
Noah's eyes widened.
Vanessa pointed at him.
“He has been manipulating you for weeks, and now you're letting him turn you against me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Stop.””
“I’m his mother.””
“And I'm his father.””
“And you’re choosing to believe a six-year-old over your wife?””
“I’m choosing to believe what I can see.””
Vanessa looked at the screen.
The video continued.
She was still in the hallway.
The bottle was still in her hand.
Then she glanced toward the nursery.
Marcus paused the footage.
“What is it?””
“It's a prescription.””
“What prescription?””
“Nothing dangerous.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus opened the security app and replayed the moment.
The bottle had a white label.
He zoomed in.
The image became grainy, but enough of the lettering was visible.
A sleep medication.
Marcus stared at it.
His mouth went dry.
“Why do you have that?””
“I can't sleep.””
“You told me you stopped taking anything months ago.””
“I lied.””
The admission was so quiet that Marcus almost missed it.
Noah looked up.
Marcus took a slow breath.
“When did you start again?””
“After Emma was born.””
“You didn't tell me?””
“I didn't want you to worry.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“You carried it into the nursery.””
“I needed it.””
“You were holding our baby.””
“I wasn't giving it to her!””
“I didn't say you were.””
“But that's what you're thinking.””
Marcus looked at the bottle again.
Something about her reaction bothered him more than the medicine.
He had expected anger.
Denial.
Maybe another lie.
Instead, she was trying to tell him the bottle was harmless before he had even accused her of anything.
He felt a chill move down his arms.
“Why did you hide it?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I panicked.””
“About what?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“About what, Vanessa?””
She looked at him.
“About losing you.””
The words hung in the hallway.
Noah glanced between them.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Everything changed when Emma was born. You stopped looking at me the same way.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“This isn't about us.””
“It is.””
“No. You staged an incident involving our son.””
“I didn't.””
“You did.””
“You don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus waited.
Finally she said, “I was desperate.””
“For what?””
“For help.””
Marcus frowned.
“What kind of help requires framing a six-year-old?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“I wasn't trying to hurt Noah.””
“Then what were you trying to do?””
“I needed you to see something.””
“What?””
“That he's changing.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“You pushed him.””
“To prove what he's capable of.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don't know what happened when you weren't there.””
“I know what the camera shows.””
“You weren't there before that.””
“You were.””
Silence.
Then Noah spoke.
“Daddy?””
Marcus turned.
The boy was staring at the phone.
“There was another time.””
Marcus crouched.
“Another time when what happened?””
“With Emma.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Noah.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Let him talk.””
“Noah is confused.””
“I’m not,” Noah said.
He stared at Marcus.
“Last Tuesday.””
“What about Tuesday?””
“Noah—”
“She locked the nursery door.””
Vanessa moved forward.
“That's enough.””
Marcus stood.
“Noah, what happened?””
“She told me I couldn't come inside.””
“Why?””
“She said Emma needed quiet.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Did that happen?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don't remember.””
Noah continued.
“Then I heard Emma crying.””
Marcus's chest tightened.
“What did you do?””
“I tried the door.””
“And?””
“It was locked.””
Vanessa whispered, “Noah—”
Marcus raised one hand.
“Keep going.””
“I called Mommy.””
“What did she say?””
“She said Emma was fine.””
“And then?””
“I heard something fall.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What fell?””
“I don't know.””
Noah looked toward the nursery.
“Then she opened the door.””
“What happened?””
“Emma was crying.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He saw a normal moment and turned it into something scary.””
Noah's voice became louder.
“You told me never to tell Daddy!””
Marcus went completely still.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“What did you say?””
Noah's lower lip trembled.
“She said if I told Daddy, he'd be angry with me.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Did you say that?””
“No.””
Noah shook his head.
“Yes.””
Vanessa knelt.
“Noah, listen to me.””
“No!””
He jumped backward.
Marcus instinctively stepped between them.
Vanessa stopped.
The hallway suddenly felt much smaller.
Marcus heard a faint buzzing sound.
He looked down at his phone.
An alert had appeared.
*Motion detected — Guest Room — 9:14 PM.*
Marcus frowned.
“We're home.””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the screen.
“What?””
He opened the alert.
A grainy image appeared.
The guest room door.
Closed.
Then another alert.
*Motion detected — 9:14 PM.*
Then another.
*Motion detected — 9:15 PM.*
Someone was inside.
Marcus looked toward the guest room.
It was only ten feet away.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
“Stay here,” Marcus said.
She grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, don't.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you stopping me?””
She let go.
Marcus walked down the hallway.
Noah followed.
“Noah, stay behind me.””
The guest room door was closed.
Marcus reached for the handle.
It turned easily.
The room was dark.
He switched on the light.
Empty.
The bed was untouched.
Curtains closed.
Window locked.
A lamp sat on the nightstand.
Nothing moved.
Marcus frowned.
Then he noticed the closet door.
It was open two inches.
He crossed the room.
Pulled it open.
Clothes.
Boxes.
A vacuum.
Nothing.
He turned back.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
“See?”” she said softly.
Marcus didn't answer.
Something on the floor caught his eye.
A small memory card.
He picked it up.
“What's this?””
Vanessa's face went blank.
“I don't know.””
Marcus held it between two fingers.
“It was in the guest room.””
“I said I don't know.””
Noah stepped into the room.
“That's a camera card.””
Marcus looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Mommy showed me.””
Vanessa snapped, “Noah!””
Marcus turned.
“You showed him a memory card?””
“No.””
“You just said you didn't know what it was.””
“I don't.””
Noah pointed toward the nightstand.
“There.””
Marcus looked.
A small camera was sitting behind the lamp.
Not a security camera.
A hidden camera.
Its lens faced the bed.
Marcus stared at it.
The room went silent.
Vanessa whispered, “Marcus…”
He picked up the camera.
A tiny red light was blinking.
Recording.
His stomach dropped.
“You've been filming the guest room?””
“No.””
“Then why is it here?””
“I don't know.””
He turned the camera over.
There was no brand sticker.
No serial number.
Just a tiny memory-card slot.
Marcus looked at the card in his hand.
He slid it inside.
The camera screen flickered.
Folders appeared.
Dates.
Dozens of them.
Weeks of recordings.
Marcus scrolled.
The newest file was from the previous night.
He opened it.
The guest room appeared on screen.
Empty.
Then the door opened.
Vanessa walked inside.
She closed the door behind her.
She was carrying Emma.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
He looked at Vanessa.
She whispered, “Don't watch that.””
Marcus pressed play.
On the screen, Vanessa placed Emma on the bed.
Then she took out the same plastic bottle.
She opened it.
Marcus leaned closer.
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
But this time, she didn't smile.
She whispered something.
The audio was faint.
Marcus turned the volume up.
Her voice became clear.
“I only need him to believe Noah is the problem.””
Marcus stopped the video.
Noah covered his mouth.
Vanessa shut her eyes.
Marcus looked at her.
“What did you say?””
She didn't answer.
He pressed play again.
On the recording, Vanessa opened the bottle.
Then she reached toward Emma.
May you like
And Marcus heard the last sentence before the video abruptly cut to black.
“Because once Marcus sends Noah away, no one will know what happened to—”
