Chapter 9: The House Where All the Lies Began
Daniel drove like the road itself was against him.
Every red light felt personal.
Every second felt stolen.
I sat beside him, watching his hands grip the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Behind us was the hospital.
Behind us was Sofia.
Ahead was the house where his family had buried secrets for nine years.
The house where my daughter had been hurt.
The house where another child had been hidden.
The house where everyone had been pretending.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t look away from the road.
“What?””
“Don’t go in there alone.””
“I won’t.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I’m not the same person who walked into that house before.””
I knew what he meant.
Before tonight, he had entered his parents’ home as their son.
Now he was entering as someone who finally knew what they had done.
A father.
A husband.
A man who had spent years being manipulated.
My phone buzzed.
A message from the hospital.
*Sofia is awake. She is asking for you.*
My heart tightened.
I wanted to turn around.
I wanted to be beside her.
But then I looked at Daniel.
A child was waiting in that house too.
A nine-year-old girl who had no idea her entire identity was built on someone else’s lie.
“We find Isabella,” I said softly.
Daniel nodded.
“And then we go back to Sofia.””
The gates of Elena’s house were open.
That was the first thing that felt wrong.
They were always closed.
Private.
Controlled.
Like everything else in that family.
Daniel parked.
Neither of us moved.
The front door opened before we reached it.
Elena stood there.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
“I wondered how long it would take.””
Daniel stopped.
“What did you do?””
Her expression barely changed.
“Hello to you too.””
“You lied to me for nine years.””
A small smile disappeared from her face.
“You should lower your voice.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
For the first time, I saw fear in Elena’s eyes.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
“You found Valentina.””
It wasn’t a question.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew she was alive.””
Elena looked away.
“I knew she would eventually come looking.””
My stomach turned.
“Eventually?””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“You knew she was suffering.””
“She made her choices.””
“No.””
His voice echoed through the entrance.
“You made them for her.””
Elena looked at me.
Then back at Daniel.
“She always knew how to manipulate people.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because after everything we had seen, hearing Elena accuse someone else of manipulation was unbelievable.
“Where is Isabella?”” Daniel asked.
Elena said nothing.
That silence told us everything.
“Where is my daughter?””
Her face hardened.
“She’s not yours.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She doesn’t know you.””
The cruelty of the sentence was almost unbelievable.
Not because it was true.
Because Elena said it like it was a weapon.
“She has a family.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“I am her father.””
“No.””
Elena stepped forward.
“You were a stranger.””
I felt Daniel break inside.
But he didn’t step back.
“Where is she?””
Before Elena could answer, a voice came from behind her.
“Grandma?””
Everyone froze.
A little girl stood in the hallway.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A red toy truck in her hands.
Isabella.
Nine years old.
She looked at us with confusion.
“Who are they?””
Elena immediately moved between us.
“Nobody, sweetheart.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Nobody.
After nine years.
That was what Elena called him.
Nobody.
I watched him look at the little girl.
His daughter.
The child he had never been allowed to know.
“Isabella.””
The girl looked at him.
“How do you know my name?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
No words came out.
Because how do you explain nine years of stolen time to a child?
How do you tell someone they were loved before they ever knew you existed?
Elena stepped forward.
“Go upstairs.””
Isabella frowned.
“But Grandma—”
“Now.””
The girl looked scared.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Scared.
That was when I noticed something.
She reacted to Elena the way Sofia reacted to a loud voice.
Carefully.
Like she was always trying not to make someone upset.
My chest tightened.
Daniel noticed too.
His expression changed.
“You did the same thing to her.””
Elena looked at him.
“What?””
“You controlled her.””
“That’s ridiculous.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You took my daughter and raised her to fear you.””
Isabella looked between them.
“Daddy?””
The word slipped out.
Accidentally.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
The little girl covered her mouth.
Like she wasn’t supposed to say it.
My eyes filled with tears.
Because somewhere deep inside, she knew.
Children know things adults try to hide.
Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
He took one careful step forward.
“I’m your dad.””
Isabella looked at Elena.
Not Daniel.
Elena.
And that told me everything.
She wasn’t asking because she didn’t understand.
She was asking because she was afraid of the answer.
Elena grabbed her shoulder.
“Upstairs.””
Daniel moved instantly.
“Don’t touch her.””
The command in his voice shocked even me.
Elena let go.
For the first time, she looked small.
Then another voice came from the doorway.
Mariela.
“I told you this would happen.””
She walked inside slowly.
Her face was pale.
Daniel turned.
“You knew.””
She stopped.
“I…”
“You knew she was my daughter.””
Mariela looked away.
That was enough.
Daniel laughed once.
A painful sound.
“My sister.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You held my daughter.””
Mariela’s eyes filled.
“I loved her.””
The words made my anger rise.
“You loved her?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you keep her from her parents?””
Mariela had no answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Because Mom said it was the only way.””
Elena turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
But Mariela was crying now.
“I was supposed to have a child.””
Silence.
She wiped her face.
“I lost mine.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Mariela looked at him.
“The baby I was pregnant with died.””
Nobody spoke.
“I was supposed to be a mother.””
Her voice cracked.
“And then Valentina had Isabella.””
I felt a chill.
“No.””
Mariela shook her head.
“I didn’t plan it at first.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked down.
“Mom told me I could raise her.””
My stomach dropped.
“She gave me your daughter.””
The room became silent.
Then Daniel said the words that destroyed her.
“You knew.””
Mariela cried.
“Yes.””
“You knew I was looking for her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Valentina was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you still called her yours.””
Mariela couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
Then the sound of breaking glass came from upstairs.
Everyone looked up.
Isabella.
We ran.
The bedroom door was open.
The child was standing beside a dresser.
In her hands was a small wooden box.
Inside were photographs.
Old ones.
A woman holding a newborn baby.
Valentina.
Daniel.
A family that should have existed.
Isabella looked at Daniel.
“Why did Grandma hide these?””
No one spoke.
She picked up another picture.
A photograph of herself as a baby.
With a note behind it.
Daniel took it carefully.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
Only three words.
*The replacement child.*
My blood went cold.
Daniel read it.
His face changed.
“What?””
I took the paper.
And there it was.
The final piece.
The reason behind everything.
Sofia wasn’t the child they wanted to erase.
Isabella wasn’t the child they wanted to hide.
They had been preparing for something much bigger.
Because beneath Elena’s note was another document.
A document with my name.
And a date.
The day Sofia was born.
Daniel looked at me.
“Camila…”
I stared at the paper.
“What is it?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“It says Sofia’s birth was never supposed to happen.””
I looked at the document.
Then at Elena.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
Not caught.
Afraid.
Because we had finally found the secret she had spent nine years protecting.
And it wasn’t just about Valentina.
It wasn’t just about Isabella.
May you like
It was about my daughter.
And why Elena had wanted Sofia gone from the very beginning.
