Chapter 4: The Document With My Name On It

The image on Daniel’s phone remained frozen.

Mariela stood in a bedroom nine years ago, her face younger but unmistakable.

In her hand was a document.

My name was written across the top.

*Camila Rivera.*

Except back then, I wasn’t a Rivera yet.

I was still Camila Torres.

My stomach twisted.

“Open it,” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t move.

“Camila…”

“Open it.””

He looked at me.

I could see the conflict in his eyes.

Part of him wanted to protect me from whatever was inside.

But another part knew we had spent nine years living inside someone else’s carefully built lie.

He pressed play.

The video started.

The angle was different from the first one.

This camera was positioned inside Mariela’s room, facing her desk.

The quality was poor.

The audio crackled.

But it was enough.

Mariela entered the room holding a folder.

She closed the door behind her.

Then she placed the document on the desk.

I watched my own name appear again.

I felt like I was watching a stranger’s life.

Mariela sat down.

She opened the folder.

“Everything is finally ready,” she said.

My blood ran cold.

She wasn’t talking to herself.

Someone else was in the room.

A man’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Are you sure this will work?””

Daniel froze.

I saw it happen.

His entire body went still.

Because he recognized the voice.

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t answer.

The man spoke again.

“You know Daniel will ask questions.””

Mariela smiled.

“Daniel asks questions when he thinks something is wrong.””

She tapped the document.

“He won’t think anything is wrong.””

I leaned closer to the phone.

“Who is that?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But his voice told me he did.

The video continued.

Mariela opened the folder.

Inside were papers.

Photographs.

Printed messages.

My hands became cold.

“She’s too comfortable,” Mariela said.

The man replied, “You’ve been trying to separate them for years.””

“Because she doesn’t belong.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Not because they surprised me.

Because hearing someone say them after everything that happened with Sofia made them feel heavier.

Mariela picked up one of the papers.

“After tomorrow, Daniel will believe whatever we tell him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“We?””

He didn’t answer.

The man stepped closer to the desk.

The camera caught part of his shoulder.

Not his face.

Then Mariela said something that made my heart stop.

“Once he sees this, he’ll leave her.””

I whispered:

“What is that?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

But his eyes never left the screen.

Mariela continued.

“The timing is perfect. She’ll be married, and everyone will believe she hid this from him.””

The man laughed softly.

“You’re really willing to destroy your own son’s marriage?””

Mariela’s expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something other than anger.

Fear.

“If Daniel knows the truth, he’ll hate me.””

The man’s voice lowered.

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have started this.””

The video paused.

Not because we stopped it.

The recording glitched.

Then resumed.

Mariela was standing now.

She held the document.

“If this doesn’t work…”

She looked toward the camera.

“I’ll make sure she leaves on her own.””

A chill moved through me.

Because those words sounded familiar.

Nine years later.

My mother-in-law had finally gotten what she wanted.

She had tried to push me away.

And when that failed…

She had turned her anger toward my daughter.

The video ended.

Neither of us spoke.

The hallway suddenly felt too quiet.

Then Daniel whispered:

“My father.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the black screen.

“The voice.””

His face had gone pale.

“That was my father.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Your father?””

He nodded slowly.

“Arturo.””

I remembered him.

Daniel’s father had always seemed different from Elena and Mariela.

Quiet.

Reserved.

Almost kind.

He had held Sofia at Christmas.

He had brought her books.

He had told me I was a good mother.

But now…

Now Daniel was telling me that man had been part of this.

“What was he doing there?”” I asked.

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel, he was helping them.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I know.””

For a moment, he looked less like my husband and more like a son discovering the people who raised him were strangers.

I reached for his hand.

But before I could touch him, a nurse opened the door.

“Mr. and Mrs. Rivera?””

We turned.

“Sofia is awake.””

Everything else disappeared.

We followed the nurse inside.

Sofia looked at us with tired eyes.

“Mommy?””

I went to her immediately.

“I’m here.””

She reached for me.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Daddy sad?””

My heart broke.

Even at two years old, she noticed.

Daniel sat beside the bed.

He forced a smile.

“Daddy’s okay.””

Sofia touched his cheek.

“No sad.””

A tear slipped from his eye.

He quickly wiped it away.

“I’m okay, princesa.””

She looked at both of us.

Then she whispered something that made me freeze.

“Grandma angry.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“What did you say, baby?””

Sofia blinked slowly.

“Grandma angry.””

I sat down beside her.

“Did Grandma scare you?””

She nodded.

My chest tightened.

“What happened, sweetheart?””

She looked confused.

Like she was trying to remember something through the pain.

“Coffee…”

Her small hand touched the bandage near her cheek.

“Mariela mad.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

But I noticed something else.

Sofia wasn’t just remembering the coffee.

She was remembering what happened before.

“Why was Aunt Mariela mad?””

Sofia’s eyes moved between us.

Then she whispered:

“She said…”

Her voice became weaker.

“She said Mommy was leaving.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel leaned closer.

“What did she say, Sofia?””

The little girl closed her eyes.

“She said Daddy would go away.””

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

Because that wasn’t a random insult.

That was the same fear Elena and Mariela had been trying to create for years.

The idea that Daniel would leave me.

That I didn’t belong.

That they could break our family.

The nurse gently touched Sofia’s shoulder.

“She needs rest.””

We nodded.

We stepped back into the hallway.

Daniel looked like he was trying to hold himself together.

“They were poisoning her against you.””

I shook my head.

“They were poisoning everyone against me.””

A moment passed.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

Another file.

Another restored recording.

This one had been hidden deeper.

The title made my breath catch.

*Three Months Before Wedding — Daniel’s Family Meeting.*

Daniel opened it.

The screen showed his childhood home.

His parents.

His sister.

And a conversation that happened before I ever became part of their family.

A conversation about me.

About our future.

About the plan they had made.

Then the audio began.

Elena’s voice came through clearly.

“Daniel cannot know what we did.””

Daniel’s face changed.

I felt his hand tighten around mine.

Mariela replied:

“He won’t.””

Then Arturo spoke.

“If Camila finds out, everything falls apart.””

I stared at the screen.

Everything fell silent.

Because the next sentence came from Elena.

May you like

A sentence that explained why they had spent nine years trying to destroy me.

“Then we make sure Camila never discovers she was never the person Daniel was supposed to marry.””
