Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Before My Wedding

For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The hospital hallway continued around us.

A nurse pushed a cart past.

A monitor beeped from somewhere behind the doors.

A child laughed faintly in another room.

But all I could hear was my own heartbeat.

*Wedding Eve — Guest Room Camera.*

The words on Daniel’s phone looked impossible.

Because there was one thing I knew with absolute certainty.

There had never been a camera in that room.

At least, not one I knew about.

“Why is there footage from nine years ago?”” Daniel asked.

His voice wasn’t angry.

That was worse.

It was confused.

Like he was trying to put together a puzzle where every piece suddenly belonged to a different picture.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

But the truth was, I did know one thing.

Someone had recorded that night.

Someone had hidden something.

And someone had spent nine years making sure we never saw it.

Daniel looked at the screen again.

“Camila, what did my mother say to you?””

I looked away.

Because suddenly I was back there.

Nine years earlier.

A different woman.

A different life.

A younger version of myself who still believed love could fix everything.

The night before my wedding had been the happiest night of my life.

At least, I thought it was.

I was twenty-six years old, sitting in a small hotel room near the church where Daniel and I would exchange vows the next morning.

My dress hung beside the window.

My shoes were lined up carefully on the floor.

Every detail had been planned.

The flowers.

The music.

The guest list.

The future.

I remember standing in front of the mirror, touching the simple necklace Daniel had given me.

He had bought it after saving money for months.

“It’s not expensive,” he had apologized.

But I had smiled.

“It’s perfect.””

Because it was never about the price.

It was about the person who gave it to me.

That night, I believed I was about to become part of a family.

Then Elena knocked on my door.

I thought she came to bring me a gift.

Instead, she walked in without smiling.

“Can we talk?””

I remember feeling nervous.

Because Elena had always been polite to me.

Cold sometimes.

Distant.

But polite.

“Of course,” I said.

She closed the door behind her.

Then she looked at me for a long time.

“You really love Daniel?””

The question confused me.

“Yes.””

She crossed her arms.

“Enough to leave him?””

I laughed softly because I thought she was joking.

But she wasn’t.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

My smile disappeared.

“Elena, what are you talking about?””

She walked toward the window.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“I’m marrying the man I love.””

“No.””

She turned around.

“You’re changing his entire life.””

I stared at her.

“He wants this.””

“You think he does.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because they weren’t angry.

They were certain.

Like she knew something I didn’t.

“I don’t understand.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Daniel has always been responsible. Always taken care of everyone around him.””

She paused.

“And people like you take advantage of men like that.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“People like me?””

She ignored the question.

“You’re young. You’re emotional. You think love is enough.””

“It is enough for us.””

She shook her head.

“No, it isn’t.””

Then she said something I never forgot.

“If you marry Daniel tomorrow, you’ll regret it.””

I looked at her.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She picked up her purse.

“It’s a warning.””

Then she left.

I never told Daniel.

Why?

Because I was afraid.

Not of Elena.

Of what telling him would do.

I didn’t want our wedding day to start with a fight between him and his mother.

I thought time would change things.

I thought when she saw how much I loved Daniel, she would accept me.

I was wrong.

“Camila.””

Daniel’s voice pulled me back.

I realized I had been staring at the floor.

“What exactly happened?”” he asked.

I swallowed.

“Your mother came to my room the night before we got married.””

His expression changed.

“She did what?””

“She told me I should leave you.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was just fear. I thought she was worried about losing her son.””

He looked down.

“And now?””

I looked through the hospital window at Sofia.

“Now I think she meant something else.””

Daniel unlocked the video.

His finger hovered over the file.

“Should we watch this?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He pressed play.

The screen showed a room.

My old hotel room.

The quality was grainy.

The colors faded.

But I knew every corner.

The chair where I sat.

The window where my dress hung.

The small table where I had written a note to myself.

A note that said:

*Tomorrow begins forever.*

Then the door opened.

Elena walked in.

My breath caught.

It was exactly the conversation I remembered.

But there was something I never noticed.

Something I never knew.

A small black object sat on the bookshelf.

A camera.

Hidden between decorations.

Recording everything.

The video continued.

My younger self smiled nervously.

Elena entered.

“Can we talk?””

Hearing those words again sent a chill through me.

Daniel watched silently.

His face became harder with every second.

The conversation played exactly as I remembered.

The accusations.

The warnings.

The insults disguised as advice.

Then came the part I had forgotten.

The part that made my blood run cold.

After Elena told me to leave Daniel, younger me stood up.

“I love him.””

Elena stared at me.

“You don’t even know the truth.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

“What truth?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

The video continued.

Elena stepped closer.

“Daniel has a right to know what you did.””

I froze.

What I did?

My younger self looked terrified.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“The fact that you lied to him.””

I felt dizzy.

Daniel paused the video.

“Camila.””

“I didn’t lie to you.””

“I know.””

His answer came immediately.

But his eyes were still fixed on the screen.

“Keep watching.””

He pressed play.

Elena continued.

“You think he’ll stay when he knows?””

My younger self looked confused.

“Knows what?””

Elena leaned closer.

“You really expect me to believe you didn’t know?””

“Know what?””

The video suddenly shook.

The audio became unclear.

Then Elena said something.

Something that made Daniel sit up straight.

Something I could barely hear.

But enough.

“You were already pregnant when you met him.””

The hallway disappeared.

I stopped breathing.

Because that was impossible.

Completely impossible.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

And I knew exactly what he was thinking.

Because Sofia was not born until two years into our marriage.

“What is she talking about?”” Daniel whispered.

“I don’t know.””

My voice broke.

“I swear, Daniel, I don’t know.””

The video continued.

My younger self looked horrified.

“That’s not true.””

Elena laughed.

“Then why did you hide the test?””

I covered my mouth.

A memory flashed.

Not of a pregnancy test.

Something else.

A medical appointment.

A conversation.

A secret I had never told anyone.

But not that.

Not what Elena was saying.

Daniel paused the video again.

“Camila.””

“I never cheated on you.””

“I know.””

“Daniel, I never had a child before Sofia.””

“I know.””

His voice was firm.

“I know you.””

That should have comforted me.

But it didn’t.

Because the question wasn’t whether Daniel believed me.

The question was why his mother had said it.

And why she had a recording of a conversation she should never have been able to prove existed.

Daniel restarted the video.

The final seconds played.

Elena reached into her purse.

She pulled out an envelope.

My younger self looked at it.

“What is that?””

Elena smiled.

“Insurance.””

The video ended.

Daniel and I stared at the frozen screen.

An envelope.

A secret.

A lie someone had prepared nine years ago.

Then another notification appeared.

The security system had found a second restored file.

This one was labeled:

*Mariela’s Room — Wedding Eve.*

Daniel opened it.

The preview image appeared.

And my heart sank.

Because the person standing in that room wasn’t Elena.

May you like

It was Mariela.

And she was holding a document with my name written across the top.
