Chapter 2: The Recording They Never Knew Existed
I stared at Daniel’s message until the words blurred.
*There’s something else on that recording. Something they don’t know they revealed.*
My first thought was not revenge.
It wasn’t anger.
It was fear.
Because I knew Daniel.
I knew the way he chose his words when he was trying not to explode.
If he was saying there was something else, then whatever was on that camera had to be worse than what I already knew.
I pushed open the door to Sofia’s room.
The lights were dim. A small monitor blinked beside her bed. The nurses had wrapped fresh dressings around the burns, and her yellow dress was gone, replaced by a tiny hospital gown.
She looked so small.
Too small for everything she had already been through.
“Mommy,” she whispered when she saw me.
I rushed to her side.
“I’m here, baby.””
She lifted her arms weakly, and I carefully picked her up, avoiding the bandaged areas.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
The hospital.
The cameras.
The betrayal.
There was only my daughter breathing against my chest.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
“Parking garage,” he said.
His voice was low.
Different.
“I’m coming up.””
I looked at Sofia.
“She’s awake.””
“I know.””
The way he said it made me pause.
“What do you mean, you know?””
A few seconds passed.
Then Daniel said quietly, “Camila, I watched the footage before I drove here.””
My heart tightened.
“And?””
“I saw everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No. Listen to me.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I saw Mariela throw the coffee.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
I knew he believed me.
I knew he loved Sofia.
But hearing him say it mattered.
Because for the last hour, I had felt like I was standing alone against his entire family.
“I saw my mother blame Sofia,” he continued.
“I saw them tell you to leave.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
There was a pause.
A long one.
Then he said:
“I saw what happened after you drove away.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What happened?””
“I don’t want to tell you over the phone.””
“Daniel.””
“Camila, please.””
The desperation in his voice stopped me.
“I need to get there first.””
The call ended.
I sat beside Sofia, holding her tiny hand.
But my mind was no longer in the hospital room.
It was back at Elena’s house.
What happened after I left?
What could possibly be worse?
Twenty minutes later, Daniel walked through the hospital doors.
I barely recognized him.
His shirt was wrinkled. His hair was messy, like he had been running his hands through it the entire drive.
But it was his eyes that scared me.
Daniel had always been gentle.
Even when he was angry, he was measured.
Tonight, there was something broken behind his expression.
He walked straight to Sofia.
No words.
He just touched her forehead and kissed her hair.
“Daddy’s here, princesa.””
Sofia opened her eyes.
“Daddy…”
His face collapsed for half a second.
Then he turned away quickly.
I saw him wipe his cheek.
Daniel Rivera was not a man who cried easily.
Seeing him do it made my chest ache.
After Sofia drifted back to sleep, we stepped into the hallway.
“Show me,” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
He unlocked his phone.
“I downloaded the footage.””
The security app opened.
A video appeared.
The timestamp showed the exact time I left.
I watched myself carrying Sofia toward the car.
My hands tightened.
Then the camera angle shifted.
The kitchen door.
Elena and Mariela walked back inside.
At first, neither of them spoke.
Then Mariela laughed.
Actually laughed.
My stomach turned.
“She’s gone,” Mariela said.
Elena poured herself another coffee.
“Finally.””
Daniel froze the video.
I looked at him.
“Finally?””
He pressed play again.
Mariela sat at the table.
“I thought she was never going to leave.””
Elena sighed.
“She always makes everything about that child.””
I felt my hands go numb.
That child.
My daughter.
The little girl lying in a hospital bed.
Mariela picked up her phone.
“You should have seen Camila’s face.””
She laughed again.
“She looked like she was going to call the police.””
Elena rolled her eyes.
“She wouldn’t.””
“Why not?””
“Because she knows what happens when she turns this into a family scandal.””
I looked at Daniel.
His jaw tightened.
I didn’t understand.
“What does she mean?””
He didn’t answer.
The video continued.
Mariela leaned back.
“I still don’t understand why you keep pretending you like Sofia.””
Elena looked up sharply.
“Lower your voice.””
My breath caught.
Daniel paused the video.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
“Pretending?””
He didn’t respond.
He pressed play.
Mariela continued.
“Everyone knows you never wanted Daniel to marry Camila.””
Elena’s face hardened.
“She trapped him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
“Keep watching.””
Mariela crossed her arms.
“She came into this family, had a baby, and suddenly Daniel thinks he has responsibilities.””
Elena looked toward the door.
“Enough.””
“No, Mom. You always say the truth when nobody is listening.””
I felt a cold sensation move through my body.
They weren’t just angry.
They weren’t just cruel.
They had been carrying this hatred for years.
Mariela continued.
“You should have let me tell Daniel years ago.””
“Tell him what?””
I whispered the words even though I already knew I was asking the wrong question.
Daniel’s eyes met mine.
“I don’t know.””
The video continued.
Elena leaned forward.
“If Daniel finds out, everything changes.””
Mariela smiled.
“He won’t find out.””
“Because?””
“Because I destroyed the evidence.””
My heart started pounding.
Daniel stopped the video again.
Neither of us spoke.
Destroyed the evidence.
Evidence of what?
I looked at my husband.
“What did she mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you looked like you expected something.””
He shook his head.
“No. I expected them to lie. I expected them to blame you. I expected them to protect Mariela.””
He looked at the frozen image on his phone.
“But I didn’t expect this.””
I grabbed his hand.
“Play it.””
He hesitated.
Then continued.
Mariela stood up.
“You know what’s funny?””
“What?”” Elena asked.
“Camila thinks Sofia is the reason Daniel loves her.””
Elena said nothing.
Mariela smiled.
“But if Daniel knew the truth about that night…”
She stopped.
The video captured her looking toward the camera.
Not directly at it.
But close enough.
My heart raced.
“What night?”” I whispered.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Mariela continued.
“He would never look at Camila the same way again.””
Elena immediately stood.
“Stop talking.””
“Why? She’s gone.””
“You don’t know who can hear you.””
Mariela laughed.
“Mom, nobody is listening.””
The video ended.
Not because someone stopped it.
Because the recording reached the end of the saved clip.
I stared at the black screen.
My mind was filled with questions.
What night?
What evidence?
What did they think Daniel would never forgive me for?
Daniel looked at me.
“Camila…”
I looked up.
His expression was full of confusion.
Not accusation.
That somehow hurt more.
“Did something happen?”” he asked softly.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what they’re talking about.””
“But they do.””
“Yes.””
“And they think I don’t know something.””
I looked back at Sofia sleeping behind the glass.
My daughter.
My entire world.
Then I thought about Elena’s words.
*She trapped him.*
A memory suddenly surfaced.
A conversation from nine years ago.
One I had almost forgotten.
The night before my wedding.
The night Elena had pulled me aside and whispered something I thought was jealousy.
Something I had ignored because I wanted to believe she would eventually accept me.
But now…
Now it sounded different.
“Daniel,” I said slowly.
“What?””
“There’s something I never told you.””
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
I looked at the hospital floor.
“Your mother came to see me before our wedding.””
Daniel went still.
“What did she say?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answer, his phone buzzed.
A new notification appeared.
From the security camera system.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His face drained of color.
“What?””
He turned the phone toward me.
A new video file had appeared.
One that wasn’t there before.
Recorded nine years ago.
The title made my blood run cold.
*Wedding Eve — Guest Room Camera.*

And underneath it was a second line.
*Deleted footage restored.*
