Chapter 5: The Woman They Tried to Replace Me With
For a few seconds after Elena’s words played through the phone speaker, I forgot how to breathe.
*“We make sure Camila never discovers she was never the person Daniel was supposed to marry.””*
The hallway around us disappeared.
No footsteps.
No voices.
No hospital sounds.
Nothing.
Just that sentence repeating over and over in my mind.
Never supposed to marry.
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely blank.
Not angry.
Not shocked.
Blank.
Like his brain was refusing to accept what his ears had just heard.
“Daniel…”
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
I reached for his hand.
It was cold.
“Say something.””
He finally blinked.
“I don’t know what that means.””
But his voice was different.
Quiet.
Almost afraid.
I had spent nine years loving this man.
I knew every expression.
Every silence.
Every small change in his voice.
And I knew this one.
Daniel was scared.
Not because he didn’t believe me.
Because he was realizing there was an entire part of his family history he had never known.
“Play the rest,” he whispered.
I nodded.
He pressed the screen.
The old recording continued.
The camera angle showed Elena sitting at the dining table.
Arturo stood near the window.
Mariela sat beside her mother, looking younger but carrying the same sharpness in her eyes.
They weren’t talking like a family having a disagreement.
They were talking like people making a plan.
Arturo spoke first.
“This has gone too far.””
Elena looked at him.
“You’re the one who agreed.””
“I agreed to talk to her.””
“You agreed to protect Daniel.””
Arturo sighed.
“And you think destroying his marriage protects him?””
My heart tightened.
Marriage.
They were talking about me before I was even married.
Mariela leaned forward.
“Dad, you don’t understand. Daniel has always been blind when it comes to saving people.””
Elena nodded.
“He thinks love means sacrifice.””
She smiled bitterly.
“And Camila knows exactly how to use that.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
Not the explosive kind.
The colder kind.
The kind that came when someone rewrote your entire life.
Daniel stopped the video.
“Camila.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Did you ever meet someone before me?””
The question hurt.
Not because he asked.
Because I knew why.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I know.””
His answer was immediate.
“I know you.””
He rubbed his face.
“But they keep talking like there was something before me.””
I thought about the years before Daniel.
My small apartment.
My boring office job.
My quiet life.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing dramatic.
“I had relationships before you,” I said carefully.
He nodded.
“So did I.””
“But nothing like this.””
“I believe you.””
The certainty in his voice mattered.
But the fear remained.
“What if they have something?””
I looked at him.
“Something that proves what?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
They didn’t need proof.
They needed doubt.
Doubt could destroy almost anything.
Especially a family.
He pressed play again.
The recording continued.
Mariela looked at Elena.
“What about the other woman?””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel froze.
“What other woman?””
I whispered.
The answer came from the recording.
Elena looked annoyed.
“She already caused enough problems.””
Mariela laughed.
“Daniel doesn’t even know she exists anymore.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
“What woman?””
The recording continued.
Arturo lowered his voice.
“This is dangerous.””
Elena stared at him.
“Everything we did was to protect this family.””
“No,” Arturo said.
His voice was firm.
“This was to protect your image.””
The room went silent.
Even through the old recording, I could feel the tension.
Elena stood.
“Careful.””
Arturo looked away.
“You threatened a woman. You lied to your son. And now you’re blaming Camila?””
My heart stopped.
A woman.
Another woman.
A secret.
Daniel whispered:
“What did they do?””
The recording continued.
Mariela grabbed the folder.
“The documents are already prepared.””
“What documents?”” Arturo asked.
“The ones that make Camila disappear from Daniel’s life.””
I felt a chill.
Disappear.
That was the word.
Not leave.
Not break up.
Disappear.
The video cut suddenly.
A loading circle appeared.
Then the file ended.
Daniel immediately tried to reopen it.
Nothing.
“Wait.””
He tapped the screen repeatedly.
“No.””
The file was gone.
Not hidden.
Gone.
“Someone deleted it,” he said.
My heart raced.
“Can they do that?””
“Not usually.””
He looked at the security app.
“Unless they still have access.””
His phone rang.
Both of us looked down.
The name on the screen made my stomach drop.
*Elena.*
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Daniel answered.
“Hello.””
Silence.
I couldn’t hear her words.
Only Daniel’s expression changing.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes hardened.
“Where did you get that idea?””
A pause.
Then:
“No, Mom. I’m not coming over.””
Another pause.
His grip tightened around the phone.
“You need to explain why you hurt my daughter.””
My chest tightened.
The hallway suddenly felt too small.
Daniel listened.
Then his expression changed from anger to disbelief.
“What?””
He looked at me.
Not because he doubted me.
Because he had just heard something impossible.
“What did you say?””
Another silence.
Then he spoke slowly.
“Mom, don’t say another word.””
He ended the call.
I stared at him.
“What happened?””
He looked at the phone.
“She said she knows about the cameras.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“What else?””
He hesitated.
That scared me.
“Daniel.””
“She said…”
He swallowed.
“She said if we keep looking, we’ll find out why Sofia was never supposed to exist.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
I felt my knees weaken.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
But his face said something else.
A terrible possibility.
A question neither of us wanted to ask.
Why would anyone say that about a child?
Why would Sofia’s existence be something they wanted to erase?
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was one photo.
An old photograph.
My hands started shaking.
It showed Daniel.
Nine years ago.
Before our wedding.
Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
A woman who looked pregnant.
Under the picture was a message.
*You should know the truth before Daniel does.*
Another message appeared.
*Ask him who she was.*
Daniel saw my face.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
I handed him the phone.
He looked at the photograph.
And for the first time since we entered the hospital…
My husband looked afraid.
Because he recognized the woman.
“Daniel?””
His eyes never left the screen.
“That’s…”
He stopped.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
His voice barely came out.
“That’s Valentina.””
“Who is Valentina?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
May you like
Then he said the words that shattered everything.
“The woman my family told me died nine years ago.””
