Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Name
A hand closed over my shoulder.
I turned.
A man stood behind me in the darkness.
The emergency lights returned for half a second, bathing his face in red.
Adrian Reed.
The resemblance to the photograph of Jonathan Reed was immediate.
Same narrow jaw.
Same dark eyes.
Same stillness.
But there was something colder in Adrian's expression.
He looked at me as if he had been waiting years for this exact moment.
Ethan stepped in front of me.
“Get away from my mother.””
Adrian smiled.
“Your mother.””
He said the words almost thoughtfully.
Then he looked at me.
“You never told him.””
“Told him what?””
“That his grandfather wasn't the man he believed.””
Thomas moved closer.
“Adrian.””
Adrian's gaze snapped toward him.
“You really are persistent.””
Mark raised his gun.
“Step away from her.””
Adrian laughed.
“You've been working for Victor all these years, Mark. Don't pretend you're suddenly noble.””
Mark's grip tightened.
“I don't work for him anymore.””
“You stopped five minutes ago.””
Adrian looked at the weapon.
“You're still holding his gun.””
Mark lowered it slightly.
“Where's the security team?””
“Locked out.””
“You disabled the doors?””
“Only the ones that matter.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“We should all calm down.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You're the attorney.””
Daniel nodded.
Adrian's smile disappeared.
“Then you know what a forged signature costs.””
Daniel went still.
I noticed.
“Daniel?””
He didn't answer.
Adrian looked at me.
“Your attorney has been more useful to Victor than you realize.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“That's a lie.””
“Is it?””
Adrian reached into his coat and pulled out a folded document.
He tossed it across the corridor.
It landed near my feet.
I bent down.
My name was on it.
My signature too.
But I didn't remember signing it.
Thomas cursed under his breath.
“What is that?””
Adrian answered without looking at him.
“Authorization.””
I unfolded the page.
It granted Victor full management authority over my father's trust.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
The date was fourteen years ago.
Three days after my father's funeral.
I stared at it.
The signature looked exactly like mine.
Ethan read over my shoulder.
“Mom.””
“I didn't sign this.””
Daniel whispered, “Claire…”
I turned toward him.
“Did I?””
“No.””
“Did I sign anything like this?””
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“You signed a temporary management authorization.””
“For how long?””
“Thirty days.””
I looked at the page.
“This says permanent.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Then it was altered.””
Adrian nodded.
“Finally, someone is being honest.””
I looked at him.
“You forged my signature.””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
He smiled.
“Your husband.””
Victor.
Again.
Always Victor.
I felt anger rise, but something else came with it.
A memory.
Victor sitting beside me at our dining table after my father's funeral.
A stack of papers between us.
His hand guiding mine.
His voice.
Just a few routine forms, Claire. The lawyers need them before Monday.
I'd cried that entire week.
I barely remembered what I'd signed.
But I remembered something else.
Victor had left the room for ten minutes.
Daniel had been there.
I turned to him.
“You were present.””
Daniel didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
“You watched him alter the document.””
“No.””
“You watched him.””
Daniel looked broken.
“I suspected something.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was twenty-nine. Victor controlled the company. I was a junior associate.””
“You were my attorney.””
“I was afraid.””
Adrian laughed softly.
“There it is.””
I looked at him.
“What do you want?””
“The recorder.””
My fingers closed around my purse.
“You already knew about it.””
“Of course.””
“How?””
“Victor told me.””
“So you worked for him.””
“I worked for whoever paid.””
Thomas stepped toward him.
“And my father?””
Adrian's expression changed.
“My father died because of yours.””
Thomas froze.
“What?””
“Your father, my father, Victor's father—they were all involved.””
I stared at him.
“My father?””
Adrian nodded.
“Your grandfather built the original holding company. Thomas's father audited it. My father handled security.””
I felt dizzy.
“And Victor?””
“He wasn't part of it at first.””
“What changed?””
Adrian looked toward the ICU.
“Greed.””
A distant alarm continued to pulse.
Victor's monitor was visible through the corridor window.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Your father discovered money was being siphoned from the trust.””
“By Victor?””
“By three people.””
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“My father.””
Then Daniel.
“Your attorney.””
Then finally me.
“Victor.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian continued.
“Victor didn't take the money for himself at first.””
“Then why?””
“To pay for something.””
I stepped closer.
“Pay for what?””
Adrian's eyes moved to Ethan.
“An operation.””
Ethan frowned.
“What operation?””
Adrian looked back at me.
“Your father's death.””
The corridor went silent.
Thomas surged forward.
“You're lying.””
Adrian didn't flinch.
“Your father was going to expose the trust.””
“So Victor had him killed.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“Then who?””
Adrian's answer came slowly.
“My father.””
Thomas looked stunned.
“Jonathan?””
Adrian nodded.
“Victor ordered him to arrange the accident.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“Why would your father obey?””
“Because Victor promised him ownership.””
“And did he get it?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because Victor double-crossed him.””
Adrian's expression hardened.
“He paid another man to eliminate my father afterward.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Adrian smiled without humor.
“You're looking at him.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Victor killed Jonathan?””
“He had him disappear.””
“What happened?””
“Your husband told everyone Jonathan fled.””
“He killed him?””
Adrian's voice lowered.
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I found the records.””
“Where?””
Adrian pointed toward my purse.
“Where you found the first half.””
I pulled out the silver key.
“The lake house.””
He nodded.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Thomas.
“You knew.””
“I knew Jonathan had disappeared.””
“You knew Victor was involved.””
“I suspected.””
“You always suspect.””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Your father trusted me. I failed him.””
Adrian stepped toward me.
“The lake house wasn't merely where your father stored the trust.””
He pointed toward the silver key.
“It was where he stored a duplicate.””
“A duplicate of what?””
“The recording.””
I looked at the old recorder.
“Then why did Thomas bring me this one?””
Adrian smiled.
“Because that's not the original.””
Thomas's head snapped toward him.
“What?””
Adrian said, “It's a decoy.””
I looked at Thomas.
He didn't move.
“Is that true?””
Thomas's silence answered for him.
My chest tightened.
“Thomas.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“When we were safe.””
“We are nowhere near safe.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me too.””
Thomas lowered his gaze.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
For fourteen years, I had believed silence was my weapon.
Now I understood that everyone around me had been using silence against me.
I looked at Adrian.
“What happens if I don't give you the recorder?””
“You go to the lake house.””
“Why?””
“Because that's where the original proof is.””
“And you come with me?””
“No.””
“Then why tell me?””
“Because Victor doesn't control the house anymore.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Adrian looked almost amused.
“Did you think those property transfers were real?””
I remembered the eight properties.
Melissa's satisfaction.
Victor's cruel smile.
Lucas's name on every document.
“You're saying he never owned them?””
“He controlled them.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“No.””
Adrian pointed at me.
“Your father put them into the trust.””
My heart stopped.
“You said the lake house belongs to you.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I said someone told you that.””
I understood.
“The house is still mine.””
Adrian nodded.
“Legally, yes.””
“Then why did Victor transfer it to Lucas?””
“Because he couldn't transfer what he didn't own.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
“That's true.””
“Then the documents are meaningless.””
“Not meaningless,” Daniel said.
“Fraudulent.””
I laughed once.
Victor's entire final performance had been built on documents that couldn't legally accomplish what he intended.
The eight properties.
The cars.
The companies.
Everything he'd tried to hand to Lucas.
None of it had belonged to him.
I reached for the recorder.
Adrian stopped me.
“One more thing.””
“What?””
“You don't understand why Lucas matters.””
“Then tell me.””
Adrian's eyes softened for the first time.
“Lucas is Victor's leverage because Victor believes the boy has something that belonged to your father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“His blood.””
I stared at him.
“But Victor isn't his father.””
“No.””
“Then who is?””
Adrian looked at Thomas.
Thomas slowly shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Adrian turned back to me.
“Your father is.””
Everything inside me went still.
Ethan whispered, “What?””
Adrian continued.
“Lucas wasn't Anne's son.””
He looked toward the family room.
“He was your father's.””
I shook my head.
“My father died fourteen years ago.””
“Six weeks before he died, he had an affair.””
“With Anne?””
“Yes.””
I looked through the glass.
Lucas sat alone now, crying beside a vending machine.
His dark eyes.
That familiar jaw.
The same eyes I had seen in the old photograph.
I suddenly understood why Victor had panicked.
Lucas wasn't valuable because Victor loved him.
He was valuable because Lucas was another heir.
Another person with a claim to the trust.
And Victor had spent fourteen years pretending the boy belonged to him.
I whispered, “Then why did he raise him?””
Adrian answered.
“Because controlling Lucas meant controlling the bloodline.””
Thomas suddenly looked toward the hospital exit.
“We need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because this building is compromised.””
Adrian nodded.
“Too late.””
A loud crash came from the ICU.
Everyone turned.
The glass shattered.
Doctors screamed.
Victor's bed disappeared behind a cloud of smoke.
I heard Ethan shout my name.
Then a second sound.
A gunshot.
When the smoke cleared, Victor's bed was empty.
The restraints had been cut.
The window behind him was broken.
And on the white hospital sheet lay a single handwritten note.
I picked it up.
Six words.
*Claire, come to the lake house alone.*
Beneath them was a signature.
*Victor.*
I stared at it.
Then my phone buzzed.
One new message.
May you like
From Victor's number.
*He's already waiting for you there.*
