Chapter 6: The Boy in the Photograph

The flatline lasted eleven seconds.

Eleven seconds was long enough to make everyone in the room stop pretending Victor Hale was untouchable.

Then the monitor jumped.

A violent spike.

A second one.

Then a ragged rhythm returned.

“Got him,” the doctor shouted.

“Keep compressions going.””

I stood against the wall, unable to look away.

Victor's chest rose beneath the sheet.

A nurse pushed me farther back.

“Ma'am, please leave the room.””

“I want to hear him.””

“He's unconscious.””

“I'll stay.””

The nurse started to argue, but Ethan stepped between us.

“She stays.””

There was something in his voice that made the nurse stop.

The doctors worked around Victor for several more minutes before the room finally quieted.

One physician pulled off his gloves.

“He has a pulse.””

Melissa began crying.

She rushed toward the bed.

“Victor!””

The doctor caught her arm.

“Not yet.””

“But I'm his—”

She stopped.

Her eyes flicked toward me.

Wife.

She couldn't say it.

Not in front of me.

Not after everything.

The doctor looked at all of us.

“He's extremely unstable. No shouting, no agitation. We're moving him to a monitored recovery room.””

Victor's eyes opened.

They were barely visible beneath his lids.

But he was awake.

And they went directly to me.

“Claire.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

His voice came out as a dry whisper.

“Drawer.””

I shook my head.

“You said Lucas wasn't your son.””

His breathing changed.

The doctor's expression tightened.

“Don't upset him.””

I ignored him.

“What did you mean?””

Victor's eyes moved toward Melissa.

She stood perfectly still.

Lucas was behind her.

He looked terrified.

Victor saw the boy.

And for the first time, I saw something like shame pass over his face.

“Not here,” he whispered.

“Then where?””

His lips moved.

“Records.””

Then he lost consciousness again.

The doctor immediately ordered everyone out.

This time, I went.

The ICU doors shut behind me.

Lucas was sitting on a chair with his elbows on his knees.

His mother stood beside him.

Neither spoke.

Ethan stared across the corridor at the boy.

Finally, he asked, “How old are you?””

Lucas looked up.

“Twelve.””

“Do you know who your biological father is?””

Melissa spun toward him.

“Ethan!””

Lucas looked confused.

“Dad is my father.””

I watched Melissa's face.

She didn't correct him.

She couldn't.

That was enough.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Lucas, who told you Victor was your father?””

The boy looked at him.

“Mom.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“And Victor?””

Lucas frowned.

“Dad said it too.””

I studied him.

His eyes.

His chin.

His nose.

Victor's features were there, but now that I knew to look, something didn't fit.

The shape of the jaw was different.

The forehead was wrong.

His hair was darker.

I had spent years believing resemblance was proof.

Suddenly, it seemed like another lie.

Melissa grabbed Lucas's hand.

“We're leaving.””

Thomas blocked her.

“No.””

“You can't stop me.””

“I don't need to.””

He looked at me.

“Claire decides.””

Melissa stared at me with open hatred.

“You've ruined everything.””

I almost smiled.

“I haven't touched anything.””

“You've spent years waiting for this.””

“For what?””

“For Victor to die.””

“No.””

I looked at Lucas.

“I spent years waiting for the truth.””

Lucas pulled his hand from his mother's.

“Mom?””

She looked down.

“It's nothing.””

“Is Dad really my father?””

Silence.

His voice broke.

“Tell me.””

Melissa's lips trembled.

“Of course he is.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“Then why did Victor say otherwise?””

Lucas stared at him.

Melissa's face hardened.

“You heard him wrong.””

“I heard him clearly.””

Daniel emerged from the ICU.

“Mrs. Hale.””

I turned.

“The doctor says Victor can speak for a few minutes once he's settled.””

I nodded.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There is something else.””

“What?””

“The police are here.””

“Why?””

“They received a call from the hospital security desk.””

“About Thomas?””

“No.””

He glanced toward the lobby.

“About the man who entered before Thomas.””

I frowned.

“What man?””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Apparently, Thomas wasn't the first person to use Victor's security code tonight.””

Thomas looked up sharply.

“Who was?””

“We don't know.””

“Then find out.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Security reviewed the footage.””

He looked at me.

“The man was wearing a maintenance uniform.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did he enter Victor's room?””

“No.””

“Then what did he do?””

“He went to the administrative records floor.””

Thomas went pale.

“That's impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because that floor was locked.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“And yet the doors were opened.””

I looked at the silver key in my hand.

“The records?””

Daniel nodded.

“The security team found the door to the hospital archive open.””

“What's missing?””

“One file.””

“What file?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Victor Hale's confidential medical records from thirteen years ago.””

The corridor went silent.

I stared at him.

“Thirteen years?””

“Yes.””

“Why would someone want his medical records from then?””

Thomas answered before Daniel could.

“To prove when he knew.””

“When he knew what?””

Thomas looked at me.

“That he could never have fathered Lucas.””

Melissa suddenly stepped backward.

Her handbag hit the wall.

Lucas noticed.

“Mom?””

I turned toward her.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“There's nothing to tell.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“I am not.””

“You are.””

I took one step closer.

“Victor said Lucas isn't his son.””

“He was delirious.””

“He said it before he collapsed.””

“He has been heavily medicated.””

“He was coherent.””

Melissa looked toward Thomas.

“You planned this.””

Thomas stared at her.

“I haven't spoken to Lucas in twelve years.””

Lucas looked between them.

“Twelve years?””

Melissa went still.

I noticed.

So did Ethan.

“Why twelve years?”” Ethan asked.

Thomas said nothing.

Lucas stood.

“Mom?””

Melissa reached for him.

He moved away.

“Why does that man know things about me?””

She started crying.

“Lucas, please.””

“Who is he?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

“I was there when you were born.””

The boy stared at him.

“What?””

Melissa whispered, “Thomas, don't.””

“I held you.””

“You promised.””

“I promised too much.””

Lucas looked at me.

“Is he my father?””

Thomas's silence answered first.

Then he said, “Yes.””

Melissa broke down.

Lucas stepped backward.

“No.””

His face crumpled.

“No, you're lying.””

Thomas's voice softened.

“I'm sorry.””

“Dad is my father!””

“I know what you were told.””

“My dad loves me!””

Thomas looked toward the ICU doors.

“Victor loved the idea of you.””

That sentence seemed to crush something inside the boy.

Lucas covered his face.

Melissa reached for him.

He shouted, “Don't touch me!””

She stopped.

Ethan looked at me.

“Mom.””

I felt numb.

Thomas was Lucas's father.

That changed everything.

The secret child Victor had paraded in front of me wasn't even his.

Victor had built an entire inheritance around someone else's son.

But that wasn't the only thing that mattered.

I looked at Thomas.

“You said you hadn't spoken to him in twelve years.””

“I hadn't.””

“Then how did you know he was your son?””

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Finally he said, “Because Victor told me.””

I felt a chill.

“When?””

“Three days after Lucas was born.””

“Why didn't you take him?””

Thomas's eyes filled with regret.

“Because Victor threatened you.””

I stared at him.

“What did he threaten?””

“He said if I claimed Lucas, you'd lose everything.””

“That doesn't explain it.””

“He told me he had forged documents.””

“What documents?””

“Your father's trust.””

I felt my pulse pounding.

Thomas continued.

“Victor said he could make it appear that your father had left the company entirely to him.””

“And?””

“And he said if I exposed him, he'd bury you financially, legally, and eventually physically.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“He threatened my mother?””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked directly at me.

“I believed him.””

I could barely breathe.

“You let him raise your son.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You let me live with a lie for thirteen years.””

“I know.””

“You watched him call Lucas his son.””

“Yes.””

I turned away.

For thirteen years, everyone around me had been lying.

Victor.

Melissa.

Thomas.

Perhaps even my own father had left behind secrets I had never been meant to understand until now.

The only person who had apparently been honest with me was the woman staring at the floor—

and even she had spent thirteen years pretending to be stupid.

I turned toward Melissa.

“You knew Thomas was Lucas's father.””

She wiped her tears.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let Victor raise him?””

“Because Victor paid for everything.””

The words were cold.

Simple.

Ugly.

I stared at her.

“You sold your son.””

“I protected him.””

“You let another man believe he owned your child.””

“He gave Lucas a life.””

“By stealing mine.””

She looked at me.

“I didn't know what Victor had done to you.””

“You knew enough.””

She had no answer.

The ICU doors opened.

A nurse stepped into the corridor.

“Mrs. Hale?””

I turned.

“Victor is awake.””

“Can he talk?””

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

“He asked for you alone.””

I started toward the door.

Thomas caught my elbow.

“Don't go.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“He may lie again.””

“He always lies.””

“Then let me come with you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Claire—”

“He wanted me alone.””

Thomas released me.

I walked into the room.

Victor's eyes opened as the door closed.

He looked at me.

Then at the silver key.

“Did he tell you?””

“Yes.””

His face crumpled.

“Thomas.””

“It's true.””

Victor stared at the ceiling.

“I knew from the beginning.””

“About Lucas?””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was Thomas's son.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you raise him?””

Victor's breathing shook.

“Because I needed a reason to hide the money.””

“What?””

“The trust required a beneficiary.””

“Lucas?””

“He was the perfect one.””

I felt sick.

“You used a child.””

“Yes.””

“You ruined Ethan's place in his own family.””

Victor turned toward me.

“I was going to fix it.””

“When?””

“After tonight.””

“After transferring everything to Lucas?””

His eyes closed.

“It was never meant to be permanent.””

I stared at him.

“Then what was it?””

Victor's hand moved toward mine.

I stepped away.

“Tell me the truth.””

He swallowed.

“The properties were never the real inheritance.””

“What was?””

He looked at the silver key.

“The lake house.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“What is in there?””

Victor whispered,

“The proof that your father was killed.””

I stared at him.

“And the person who ordered it…”

His voice broke.

“He is still alive.””

I leaned closer.

“Who?””

Victor looked past me toward the door.

His lips barely moved.

“Your mother.””

May you like

My entire body went cold.

Then the door handle began to turn.
