Chapter 10: The Truth Beneath the Lake House
The lake house stood exactly as I remembered it.
Tall windows.
Gray stone.
A long wooden dock disappearing into black water.
No lights.
No cars.
No people.
Except one.
Victor sat in a wheelchair on the veranda.
Alive.
Barely.
An oxygen tank rested beside him, and a blanket covered his legs. His wrists were bound loosely to the chair.
For several seconds, I could only stare.
Then I stepped out of my car.
“Victor.””
His head lifted.
“Claire.””
I looked behind me.
Thomas had stopped at the end of the driveway.
Adrian was beside him.
Ethan remained in the car.
I had promised Victor I would come alone.
I had lied.
For once, I didn't feel guilty about it.
Victor gave a weak smile.
“You brought them.””
“I brought witnesses.””
His smile disappeared.
“You never were this suspicious before.””
“No.””
I walked toward him.
“You made me suspicious.””
Victor looked at the house.
“You're standing on something that belongs to you.””
“I know.””
He laughed softly.
“Do you?””
I stopped.
“You stole my father's company.””
“I built it.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I protected the trust.””
“You killed my father's reputation.””
“I protected you.””
“And you raised another woman's child while pretending he was yours.””
Victor looked at me.
That was the only accusation that made his expression change.
“I protected Lucas.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You used him.””
Victor closed his eyes.
“You don't understand what your father left behind.””
“I understand that you spent fourteen years trying to keep me from finding out.””
He looked at Thomas.
“He told you?””
“Enough.””
Victor's gaze moved to Adrian.
“You should have stayed gone.””
Adrian stepped onto the veranda.
“You should have died fourteen years ago.””
Victor smiled bitterly.
“That was the plan.””
My stomach tightened.
Victor looked at me.
“Your father knew he was going to be killed.””
“By whom?””
“Jonathan.””
Adrian's jaw clenched.
“My father was ordered to do it.””
“Yes.””
“You paid him.””
“Yes.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Then why did you kill him?””
Victor looked at him.
“Because he became dangerous.””
“You murdered my father.””
“I stopped him from taking everything.””
“You mean the trust.””
Victor nodded.
“The trust.””
I stared at him.
“My father didn't just leave me property.””
“No.””
“What did he leave me?””
Victor looked toward the lake.
“Control of the original company.””
“And the properties.””
“All of them.””
“Then why did you bother transferring them to Lucas?””
Victor gave a tired smile.
“Because I needed you to think I had power.””
I understood.
“You wanted me to panic.””
“I wanted you to react.””
“So you could use my reaction against me.””
“Yes.””
“And if I hadn't reacted?””
Victor looked directly at me.
“I would have found another way.””
I crouched in front of him.
“Why?””
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he whispered,
“Because I was dying, Claire.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I knew I had weeks left.””
“You knew months ago.””
“Yes.””
“And you called your attorney.””
“Yes.””
“You gathered Melissa and Lucas.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted to humiliate me.””
Victor swallowed.
“I wanted you angry enough to sign.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Sign what?””
He looked toward the front door.
“The final release.””
I went still.
“What final release?””
“The document in the office.””
I laughed.
“You were going to make me sign away the entire trust.””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why would I ever sign it?””
“Because I knew exactly how to break you.””
Victor's voice became softer.
“Ethan.””
I looked back at the house.
Ethan had gotten out of the car.
He was walking toward us.
Victor saw him.
“I never wanted to hurt him.””
“You used him.””
“I needed something you'd protect.””
I stepped closer.
“You thought I would trade everything for my son.””
“Yes.””
“And you were wrong.””
Victor's face fell.
“Yes.””
I stood.
Thomas approached.
“The drawer.””
Victor looked at him.
“You found it.””
“No.””
I reached into my coat and pulled out the brass key.
Victor stared at it.
“I found the key.””
His eyes widened.
“You shouldn't have.””
I turned toward the front door.
Thomas stopped me.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
He handed me the old voice recorder.
“The original.””
My eyes widened.
“When did you get it?””
He looked at Adrian.
Adrian said, “The decoy was in my father's files. The real one was never in the envelope.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father gave it to me after the meeting.””
“You had it all along.””
“For fourteen years.””
“And you still lied.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because your father made me promise I would not give you the recording until Victor was dying.””
I stared at him.
“That was his condition?””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“He knew Victor would eventually become careless.””
Victor laughed.
“Your father was always arrogant.””
I pressed play.
Static crackled.
Then my father's voice filled the night.
“Claire, if you are hearing this, Victor has finally run out of time.””
Victor's face changed.
The recording continued.
“I know what he's done.””
Paper rustled.
“I know about the trust. I know about the money. I know he has arranged for my death.””
Victor closed his eyes.
My father's voice continued.
“But Victor is not acting alone.””
I looked at Daniel, who had followed us from the car.
He stopped.
The recording continued.
“The person who helped him is the trustee.””
Daniel's face went white.
I stared at him.
“No.””
He whispered, “I was twenty-nine.””
My father's voice continued.
“The trustee forged Claire's authorization and gave Victor control.””
Daniel looked down.
“I didn't know he'd kill you.””
“You knew enough.””
The recording played on.
“Victor has promised the trustee money.””
A pause.
“More importantly, Victor has promised Melissa that she will be protected.””
Melissa stepped out from behind the house.
Lucas stood beside her.
I hadn't heard them arrive.
She was crying.
Victor looked at her.
“You followed me.””
She shook her head.
“You were going to leave me.””
Victor stared.
Melissa looked at me.
“He told me the lake house belonged to Lucas.””
“It never did.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know now.””
Lucas looked at Victor.
“Are you my father?””
Victor stared at him.
For the first time, he couldn't lie.
“No.””
Lucas's face collapsed.
“My father is dead?””
Victor swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Victor looked at me.
Then at the water.
“Claire's father.””
Lucas stared at me.
I felt the weight of that truth settle between us.
“My grandfather.””
He nodded.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Your father left you a trust, Lucas.””
Victor shook his head.
“Don't.””
“He deserves to know.””
I looked at Thomas.
“What trust?””
Thomas explained.
“Your father created separate inheritance provisions for his children.””
I looked at Lucas.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“About Lucas?””
“He suspected Anne was pregnant.””
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he intended to tell you after the company restructure.””
“What happened?””
Victor answered.
“I stopped him.””
The recording continued.
My father's voice became quieter.
“Claire, there is one final truth.””
I held my breath.
“I discovered Lucas was my son.””
Lucas stared at the recorder.
My father continued.
“Victor discovered it too.””
Then silence.
A second voice appeared.
Victor's voice.
Younger.
Angry.
“If you tell Claire, she'll inherit everything.””
My father's voice:
“It's hers already.””
Victor:
“She'll destroy me.””
My father:
“You destroyed yourself.””
A crash.
Then Victor's voice again.
“I won't let you take my life away.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The lake was completely still.
I looked at Victor.
“You killed him.””
He shook his head.
“I didn't touch him.””
“But you ordered it.””
“Yes.””
“Jonathan did it?””
Victor nodded.
“He staged the accident.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“And then you killed my father.””
Victor looked at him.
“Yes.””
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan kept the original recording.””
“And you were afraid he'd expose you.””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I found the backup last year.””
“In the lake house?””
“Yes.””
“That's why Melissa came here.””
She nodded.
“Victor sent me to find it.””
I looked at Victor.
“And when you couldn't find it?””
“I knew you eventually would.””
“So you moved everything to Lucas.””
“Because I needed you desperate.””
“You gambled that I would break.””
Victor looked at me.
“I never imagined you could become this.””
I smiled faintly.
“Neither did I.””
Sirens appeared in the distance.
Daniel had called the police before we left the hospital.
Victor heard them.
He looked at me.
“You're turning me in.””
“Yes.””
“You'll lose everything.””
“No.””
“I can still fight.””
“You won't.””
He looked confused.
I reached into my coat.
I pulled out the document Victor had tried to make me sign.
The forged release.
Then I tore it in half.
And again.
And again.
The pieces scattered across the veranda.
“You already lost.””
Victor stared at them.
His breathing became uneven.
“You think this is revenge.””
“No.””
I looked at Lucas.
“It's correction.””
Lucas stood beside his mother, crying silently.
Ethan walked over and put a hand on his shoulder.
“You didn't do any of this.””
Lucas looked at him.
“My mother lied.””
“So did mine.””
Ethan glanced at me.
“But she was trying to protect me.””
I felt tears finally reach my eyes.
Not because of Victor.
Because my son understood.
The police arrived.
Officers rushed up the steps.
One of them approached Victor.
“Victor Hale?””
Victor looked at me.
For one last moment, I saw the man I'd married.
Not the businessman.
Not the liar.
Not the manipulator.
Just an exhausted man who had spent twenty-one years believing everyone could be controlled.
He whispered,
“Why didn't you confront me thirteen years ago?””
I looked at him.
“Because thirteen years ago, I only wanted the truth.””
I glanced at the recorder.
“Now I have it.””
The officer placed handcuffs around Victor's wrists.
As they wheeled him away, his eyes stayed on me.
I watched until the car disappeared down the road.
Then I turned toward the lake.
The sun was beginning to rise.
Morning light spread across the water.
Thomas stood beside me.
“You could have destroyed everything.””
“I know.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
I looked toward Lucas.
Then Ethan.
Then the house my father had once trusted to hold his secrets.
“I think that's what my father wanted.””
Thomas nodded.
“Probably.””
I smiled.
For thirteen years, I had carried the weight of a secret marriage.
A secret son.
A secret fortune.
A secret death.
Victor thought he had spent those years hiding the truth from me.
He was wrong.
I had been gathering it.
Piece by piece.
Waiting for the day his lies became too heavy to stand.
That day had finally come.
I took off my wedding ring.
For twenty-one years, it had felt like a promise.
Now it felt like evidence.
I dropped it into the lake.
The tiny splash disappeared almost instantly.
Ethan came to stand beside me.
“Mom?””
“Yes?””
“What happens now?””
I looked at the rising sun.
“Now?””
I slipped my father's key into my pocket.
May you like
“Now we open every door he tried to lock.””
And for the first time in twenty-one years, I walked away from Victor's shadow without looking back.
