Chapter 2: The Envelope
The nurse shoved the curtain aside and barked, “Everyone out. Now.””
Melissa stumbled backward.
Lucas grabbed her coat.
Victor's mother stood frozen beside the window, one hand pressed to her pearls.
Daniel stared at the envelope on the bedside table.
I didn't move.
Victor's fingers were still wrapped around mine.
Then the nurse pulled his hand away from me.
“Ma'am, you need to step back.””
I stepped back.
Not because she told me to.
Because Victor's face had changed.
The color had drained from it completely.
His eyes remained fixed on the envelope.
“What is that?”” Daniel asked.
I looked at him.
“You're his attorney. You tell me.””
The nurse pointed toward the door.
“Out.””
Ethan reached for my arm.
“Mom.””
“I'm fine.””
“No, you're not.””
“I am.””
Behind us, another nurse rushed into the room with a crash cart.
Victor's monitor screamed.
Melissa began crying.
Not for Victor.
Not really.
She kept looking at the envelope.
“What's inside?”” she whispered.
I met her eyes.
“Something your handbag didn't come with.””
Her face went white.
Daniel turned sharply toward her.
“You know something about this?””
Melissa shook her head.
“No.””
Victor's mother snapped, “Everyone stop talking.””
She sounded less like a grieving mother and more like a woman trying to keep a secret from escaping through an unlocked door.
I noticed that.
So did Ethan.
“Grandma,” he said, “why are you acting like this?””
She glared at him.
“Go wait outside.””
“I asked you a question.””
“Ethan,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
I shook my head.
Not here.
Not yet.
He reluctantly walked out.
I followed.
The ICU doors swung shut behind us.
Ethan paced twice before turning around.
“Mom, what did Dad mean when he said, ‘You know’?””
I looked through the glass.
Doctors and nurses surrounded Victor.
Melissa stood near the wall, hugging herself.
Daniel hadn't moved.
He was still staring at the envelope.
“I'll explain everything,” I said.
“When?””
“Soon.””
His jaw tightened.
“You've been saying that since I was sixteen.””
That hurt.
I looked away.
He lowered his voice.
“Does Dad have another family?””
The hallway seemed to lose all sound.
I watched the fluorescent lights flicker above us.
Then I looked at my son.
“Ethan, there's something you need to understand.””
He waited.
“I didn't keep quiet because I was afraid.””
“Then why?””
“Because your father wasn't as careful as he thought he was.””
Ethan stared at me.
“What does that mean?””
Before I could answer, the ICU doors opened.
Daniel stepped into the hall.
His face looked ten years older.
“Mrs. Hale.””
I turned.
“Is he alive?””
“For the moment.””
“What happened?””
“He went into a cardiac arrhythmia. They stabilized him.””
I nodded.
Ethan exhaled.
Daniel looked toward the ICU.
“I need to speak with you privately.””
“You can speak here.””
He lowered his voice.
“The envelope.””
I said nothing.
“Where did you get it?””
“I wrote it.””
His expression changed.
“You prepared it?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Daniel stared at me.
“How many years?””
“Thirteen.””
He swallowed.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It will.””
His eyes moved toward Ethan.
“I think it would be better if we spoke without your son.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Whatever you're about to say, say it in front of me.””
Daniel hesitated.
I nodded.
“Tell him.””
Daniel rubbed a hand over his mouth.
“Your father has made several transfers over the last few weeks.””
Ethan frowned.
“To the properties?””
“Yes.””
“Lucas?””
“Yes.””
Ethan looked at me.
“But those were made today.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“The final documents were signed today. The preparations began weeks ago.””
A strange silence followed.
Ethan's face hardened.
“So Dad knew he was dying.””
“Not officially.””
“He knew.””
Daniel didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
I crossed my arms.
“What else?””
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Your husband has a second set of financial records.””
“I know.””
“You know?””
“Yes.””
He looked genuinely shocked.
“Then you know about the offshore account.””
Ethan's head snapped toward me.
“You knew about that too?””
I glanced at him.
“I knew there were accounts.””
Daniel said, “There is one account you may not know about.””
I waited.
“Money has been moved into it for nearly fourteen years.””
Melissa appeared behind him.
She must have slipped out while we were talking.
Her face was streaked with tears now.
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“Melissa.””
“Is he going to make it?””
Daniel's expression remained blank.
“I don't know.””
She looked directly at me.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the closed ICU doors.
“Victor needs Lucas with him.””
“He can barely breathe,” Ethan said.
“He asked for his son.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So did I.””
Melissa flinched.
“That isn't fair.””
“Neither is this.””
She looked at me.
“Your son was always going to have the house.””
Ethan stared at her.
“What house?””
Melissa's mouth opened.
No words came.
I answered.
“The house where your father keeps his second life.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Mom?””
Daniel closed his briefcase.
“Please.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because there are documents in that envelope that could change everything.””
Melissa's expression snapped from confusion to fear.
“What documents?””
I smiled faintly.
“Not yours.””
She took a step toward me.
“You can't do this.””
“Do what?””
“You're his wife.””
“I know.””
“He told me he was leaving everything to Lucas.””
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
“Interesting.””
Daniel looked at Melissa.
“Mrs. Cruz, I think you should go back inside.””
She didn't move.
“You knew about the transfers,” he said.
Her eyes hardened.
“Victor told me.””
“All eight properties?””
“Yes.””
“The vehicles?””
“Yes.””
“The life insurance?””
She hesitated.
That tiny hesitation was enough.
I watched Daniel notice it.
Melissa folded her arms.
“What about it?””
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“Nothing.””
She turned away.
I almost smiled.
She had no idea how much I had already collected.
For thirteen years, every time Victor came home late, I had gone into his office.
I never touched the obvious things.
I never opened the drawers he would notice.
I photographed papers.
Recorded account numbers.
Copied passwords.
Tracked dates.
I learned the pattern.
Luxury purchases always appeared three days after money left a particular account.
Private-school payments were made from a company Victor claimed had been dissolved.
The apartment Melissa lived in wasn't rented.
It had been purchased through a shell company.
And Lucas's birth certificate listed Victor as the father.
Victor had thought hiding the child was the hard part.
It wasn't.
The hard part was hiding the money.
And money leaves footprints.
Ethan sat down on one of the plastic chairs.
“I don't understand.””
I sat beside him.
“Your father made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He thought I loved him more than I trusted myself.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
I reached into my purse.
His eyes followed my hand.
I pulled out a small brass key.
He frowned.
“What's that?””
“His office.””
“We have the key.””
“Not this one.””
I placed it in his palm.
“It's for a drawer inside his desk.””
Ethan turned it over.
“What's in there?””
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
Before I could answer, the ICU doors opened again.
Daniel walked out.
This time, his face was different.
He looked frightened.
He came straight toward me.
“Mrs. Hale.””
“What happened?””
“He woke up.””
I stood.
“Is he stable?””
“He asked for you.””
I glanced through the glass.
Victor was staring directly at me from the bed.
Then Daniel whispered, “He also asked me whether you had taken the key.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Ethan looked down at the brass key in his hand.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Because apparently, there is one thing in that drawer Victor was more afraid of losing than his money.””
The ICU door opened wider.
Victor's voice came faintly from inside.
“Bring her in.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then at the key.
Then at my dying husband.
May you like
And for the first time in thirteen years, I wondered whether Victor had been hiding the truth from me—
or whether he had been hiding it from everyone.
