Chapter 4 - THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

I did not sleep again that night.
I lay perfectly still, eyes fixed on the door, listening for the slightest sound. Every creak of the house felt like a footstep. Every shadow seemed to hold a shape.
When morning came, I did not go to breakfast. I stayed in my room, staring at my watch. The recording was still there, safe inside its memory. Claire’s voice. The stranger’s warning. All of it.
I could show my father. I could show Sarah. I could tell them everything.
But then the stranger’s words repeated: If the wrong people find it first… they will hurt anyone standing in their way.
And another thought came—if Claire was involved… how far did this go? Could I trust anyone?
A knock sounded.
I jumped, shoving the watch beneath my pillow.
“Come in,” I said.
Claire entered. She carried a tray with milk and fruit. She looked tired. Her eyes were red. She would not meet my gaze.
“Good morning, Mia,” she said, setting the tray down.
She spoke as if nothing had happened. As if no stranger had stood in my room in the dark.
“Claire,” I said.
She paused. “Yes?”
“Who was that man?”
She closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, her expression was pained. “Someone from my past.”
“Is he dangerous?”
“Not to you. Not if we are careful.” She sat beside me. “Mia… what I told you last night. Keep it quiet. Just for a little while longer. Please.”
“Why?”
“Because if certain people learn what we are looking for… they will take it. And then very bad things will happen.” She reached into her pocket. She pulled out the silver locket. “Vanessa did not leave this by accident. She wanted someone to find it. Someone who would understand what it meant.”
“Who?”
Claire hesitated. “Me.”
I stared at her. “You knew her?”
Claire looked away, toward the window. “We were… connected. Long before she ever married your father.”
My mind reeled. Claire—kind, gentle Claire—had known Vanessa before coming here? Had she known who Vanessa was? Had she been part of a plan all along?
“Did you help her?” I asked, my voice small.
Claire turned back quickly. “No. Never. I came here to protect you. To stop her.”
“From what?”
Claire stood abruptly. “I have said too much. Eat your breakfast, Mia. And remember—say nothing to anyone. Not yet.”
She walked out, leaving me with more questions than answers.
Later that morning, my father called everyone together in the main parlor. He stood before the fireplace, papers in hand, his face grave. Sarah stood beside him.
“I have something important to tell you all,” he said to the staff gathered before him. “Vanessa is gone. She will not return. But this situation is not yet resolved. Until further notice, no one leaves the grounds without permission. No one admits visitors. And if you see anything suspicious—anything at all—you report it to me or Sarah immediately.”
Murmurs rippled through the room.
“Is she coming back?” one maid asked quietly.
My father looked at Claire, standing near the back. His gaze lingered a moment longer than usual. Then he turned away.
“We are taking every precaution,” he said. “But we must be prepared.”
After the meeting, Sarah pulled my father aside. I stood near the doorway, pretending to examine a flower arrangement, and listened.
“She contacted me this morning,” Sarah said, voice low.
My father stiffened. “Vanessa?”
“She sent an email. She knows we found the marriage license is fake. And she knows we are looking into the trust.”
“What does she want?”
“Five million dollars. And safe passage out of the country. In exchange… she will not destroy everything.”
My father stared. “Destroy what?”
“She says she has proof of something. Something that would ruin your reputation. Your business. Everything you have built. She says she will release it publicly if you do not pay.”
My father’s face paled. “What could she possibly have?”
“She did not say. Only that she has waited years for this moment. And that she is not afraid to burn the whole world down to get what she wants.”
I gripped the doorframe. Vanessa was blackmailing us. And she had something—some secret—powerful enough to threaten my father, the most powerful man I knew.
But then I thought of the locket. The word WITNESS. The stranger’s questions.
Vanessa wasn’t blackmailing with something she had. She was blackmailing with something she had hidden. Something she had left behind. And until she recovered it… she could not reveal her secret.
That was why she needed the locket. That was why the stranger had come. They were racing to find it. And so were we.
I touched my wrist. The watch rested there. Safe.
I walked quietly to Sarah’s office. The door was slightly open. She was on the phone, her voice tense.
“I need you to dig deeper,” she said. “Find out where Vanessa came from. Who her family is. Who she worked for. Every connection she has. Because whoever she really is… it is not who she pretended to be.”
She paused, listening.
“Claire?” Sarah repeated. “Yes, I have wondered that too. She appeared just before Vanessa did. Too convenient. Keep looking into Claire’s background as well. If there is a connection… I need to know.”
My heart sank. Even Sarah suspected Claire.
I turned and walked away. I needed to think. I needed to understand.
I went to the garden, to the bench where I had found the locket. I knelt down. I ran my fingers through the dirt beneath it.
If Vanessa had hidden something here… and the locket was the clue… then where was the rest?
I looked at the locket’s shape. Round. Small. Hollow. A container.
*WITNESS*.
I stood and looked around the garden. There were statues. Fountains. Trees.
A witness sees things. A witness remembers. A witness stands still while everything changes.
I walked to the old stone angel near the garden gate. It stood tall and silent, watching the house. Weathered. Ancient. Always there.
I knelt at its base. I brushed away leaves and dirt. And there, tucked into a crack in the stone, was a small, folded envelope.
My breath caught.
I pulled it out. It was sealed. No name. No address.
I held it carefully. This was what they were looking for. Vanessa’s secret.
And suddenly, footsteps sounded fast behind me.
“I found it!” a voice shouted.
I turned.
May you like
Standing there, face twisted with triumph, was the man from my room.
And behind him stood Claire.
