Chapter 19 - THE CHOICE OF TRUTH

The police arrived minutes later. They hunted the grounds with dogs and flashlights. But Hale was gone.

Maria turned herself in. She gave them everything—every message, every instruction, every place Hale had ever hidden. She told them where he kept clothes. Money. Passports. And she told them where her son was being held.

By dawn, the boy was found. Safe. In a small apartment across town.

Maria looked at my father before she left with the officers.

“I did what I had to do,” she said quietly. “And I would do it again for my child. I hope you understand.”

My father nodded. “I do.”

That afternoon, we sat together in the parlor. The police had copies of the recordings. They had Maria’s testimony. They had Sarah’s confession. They had Vanessa’s letter.

Everything we needed to put Hale away forever.

But my father looked tired. Older.

“He will come back,” he said. “He will not rest until he silences us all.”

“Then we will be ready,” Julian said. His arm was bandaged. But his eyes were steady.

Claire placed a hand on my shoulder. “We have the truth. That is our greatest strength.”

I looked at the watch on the table. The little pink device that had started everything. That had caught a confession. That had exposed a killer. That had saved us all.

I picked it up.

“Vanessa said something to me,” I said. “Before they took her away.”

My father looked at me. “What did she say?”

“She said… that truth is dangerous. But lies are deadly.” I touched the cracked screen. “And she was right.”

My father stood. He walked to the window. The sun was setting. Golden light spilled across the lawn.

“We will rebuild,” he said. “We will heal. And we will wait. Hale cannot hide forever. And when he returns… he will find us ready.”
