Chapter 11 - THE HIDDEN ROOM

We reached the mansion breathless. Lights burned in the distance. The guards stood at the gates as before. But somewhere inside those walls, a dangerous man held a prisoner.

My father signaled us to follow him around the side. We slipped through the unlocked conservatory door—the one Hale had always been trusted to lock.

“He knew every weakness,” my father muttered. “Every entrance. Every blind spot.”

We moved quietly through the ground floor. Room by room. Closets. Pantries. Under staircases. Nothing.

“Where would he hide someone?” Julian whispered. “Where would no one search?”

I thought of the house. Of the parts I had never seen.

“Grandfather used to speak of a sealed room,” I said softly. “Behind the library shelves. He said it was boarded up long ago.”

My father’s eyes widened. “The archives. I’d forgotten. It was closed when I was a boy.”

We hurried to the library. My father ran his hand along the heavy oak shelving. He found a small brass lever half-hidden behind a row of old books. He pulled.

A section of shelves swung inward with a low groan.

Darkness yawned beyond. A narrow staircase descended.

My father drew a flashlight. “Stay behind me.”

We crept down. The air smelled of damp earth and old stone. At the bottom lay a long, low corridor. And at the far end—light.

A door stood slightly ajar. Voices drifted out.

“—they will search everywhere!” a woman’s voice said. Sharp. Anxious. Vanessa.

“Not here,” a man replied. Hale. “This house has secrets. And I know them all.”

My father motioned for us to wait. He crept forward. Julian followed. Claire and I stayed back, trembling.

“I did what you told me!” Vanessa said. “I found the truth. I wrote the letter. But then the girl found it!”

“Quiet,” Hale said. “All we need is the recording. Once we have that… everything changes.”

“Sarah will talk!”

“Sarah will not betray me. She knows too much. If I fall… she falls with me.” Hale’s voice lowered. “And once I have what I need… I will leave the country. You will be free. We both get what we want.”

“And Mia?” Vanessa asked.

Silence stretched.

“Mia is the only witness,” Hale said. “And witnesses can be silenced.”

Claire’s hand tightened around mine.

My father pushed the door open.

“Step away from her.”

Hale spun around. He stood beside Vanessa. He held a knife. Vanessa’s hands were tied. Her face was pale. Bruises marked her arms.

“Adrian,” Hale said calmly. “You are early.”

“Let her go.”

“Not until we make a deal.” Hale pressed the blade closer to Vanessa. “The letter. The recording. And safe passage. In exchange… I leave your family alone forever.”

“You have already threatened my daughter,” my father said, his voice ice-cold. “There is no deal.”

Hale’s eyes flickered. He saw Julian in the doorway. He saw Claire and me standing behind. His gaze locked on my wrist.

“The watch,” he said. “That is where she keeps it.”

He took a step toward me.

“Mia—run!” my father shouted.
