Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

I did not run.

I stood my ground. I gripped the watch on my wrist.

Hale lunged. My father caught his arm. They crashed against the stone wall. The knife clattered across the floor.

Vanessa stumbled, untied her hands, and grabbed the knife. She stood trembling, blade pointed at Hale.

“Vanessa—no!” Hale warned.

She hesitated. Her face was torn. He had been her ally. Her protector. The man who had promised her everything. But he had also threatened a child. He had threatened me.

“You said we would hurt no one!” Vanessa cried.

“I said what was necessary!” Hale shouted. “Put it down!”

My father pinned Hale against the wall. Julian stepped in to help. Hale struggled, wild and desperate.

“Tell them everything!” my father said to Vanessa. “Tell them what he did!”

Vanessa looked at Hale. Then at me. She lowered the knife, just slightly.

“He killed Lily,” Vanessa said. “And Sarah helped him. And I… I found the proof. But I was wrong about you, Adrian. I was wrong about everything.”

Hale went still. Then he laughed—a harsh, bitter sound.

“And now what? You hand me over? I will take all of you down with me.”

“Then talk,” my father said. “Tell us everything. Before it is too late.”

Hale fell silent. Sirens wailed above us—approaching fast. Hale’s eyes darted to the narrow corridor.

“You cannot keep me here,” he said. “I know every exit.”

“Then go,” Vanessa said suddenly.

We all turned to her.

“Vanessa?” my father asked.

She stepped aside, clearing a path. “Run. Before the police come. But if you ever return… I will finish what I started.”

Hale stared at her. Then he bolted. He vanished into the shadows of the corridor. My father started after him, but Vanessa caught his arm.

“Let him go,” she said. “He will not get far. And while he runs… we have time to tell the truth.”

My father looked at her—really looked at her—for the first time. Bruised. Shaking. But no longer cruel. No longer hiding.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because I was wrong,” she said. “I hated you. I blamed you. I hurt your daughter… because I thought it would bring me justice. But justice is not found in cruelty. And it is not found in lies.”

Sirens blared above us. Footsteps thundered down the stairs.

Vanessa looked at me. She took a step closer, then stopped, keeping her distance.

“I am sorry, Mia,” she said, her voice breaking. “For everything.”

I looked at her. At the woman who had made me kneel. Who had hurt me. Who had tried to steal my home. And yet… she had also helped expose the truth. She had chosen to let Hale go rather than let him hurt me.

“Will you tell the police?” I asked.

May you like

“Everything,” she said. “All of it. And whatever happens to me… I deserve it.”
