Chapter 7 - THE WEB WIDENS

The room seemed to grow smaller. The air felt thin and cold. I backed away until my legs hit the edge of the bed. Claire stood in the doorway, blocking my only exit, her face stripped of its usual gentle warmth. Her eyes were sharp, calculating, and frighteningly familiar.

“How did you know what it says?” I whispered.

Claire took a slow step forward. “Because I helped her write it. Elena and I. We were best friends. I was the one who gave her the locket. I was the one who told her where to hide the message.”

I stared at her. All this time… Claire had known my mother. Had been close to her. And she had never said a word.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my voice cracking.

“Because Elena made me promise,” Claire said, her voice softening just a little. “She made me swear to keep it secret until the day you were old enough to understand. Or until the truth became impossible to hide.”

“And that day is now?”

Claire looked at me sadly. “Vanessa found Sophia. The story is unraveling. Secrets are surfacing. And Adrian… Adrian is making choices that terrify me.”

I thought of the note. Trust no one. Not even him.

“Daddy,” I said. “Mother meant Daddy.”

Claire nodded slowly. “Elena was afraid of him. Not because he was cruel — but because he would do anything to protect what he believes is his. Including hiding the truth. Including lying to keep you by his side.”

“Is he my real father?” I asked. The question felt like ripping a bandage from a wound.

Claire hesitated. “That is the one thing Elena would never tell me. She said the truth about your birth was too dangerous to share. That some secrets could get people killed. But she did say this — Adrian loves you more than anything. But he is not the man you think he is.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means he has been lying to you,” Claire said. “About the accident. About why you were hidden. About who is truly dangerous. Elena didn’t hide you because she was afraid of strangers. She hid you because she was afraid of Adrian. Because she discovered something about him — something terrible — and she knew if she told anyone… neither of you would ever be safe again.”

My head spun. Everything I believed was turning upside down. Daddy — my kind, gentle, protective father — was the one my mother had feared? He was the reason she’d hidden me away?

“That can’t be true,” I whispered. “He loves me.”

“He does,” Claire said. “But love isn’t always enough to keep someone safe. Sometimes love is the most dangerous thing of all.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She handed it to me. “I didn’t want to show you this yet. But I think you need to see it.”

I unfolded it. It was a police report, dated the day of the accident. I scanned the details: car found crashed, driver deceased, no child recovered. But at the bottom, in a section marked WITNESS STATEMENTS, one line stopped my breath:

*Vehicle appeared to have been forced off the road. Second vehicle seen leaving the scene. Description matches Mr. Adrian Hale’s car.*

The paper shook in my hands. “No…”

“Adrian told everyone it was an accident,” Claire said quietly. “He told the police Elena lost control. That the road was wet. That there was no other car. And because he was wealthy, respected, because he had friends in high places… they believed him. The report was altered. The witness statement disappeared. And the case was closed.”

I stared at the words. My own father… had he chased my mother off the road? Had he killed her?

“Why?” I whispered. “If he did it… why?”

“Because she was leaving him,” Claire said. “She told him she was taking you away. That she knew the truth about his family. That she was going to expose everything. And he couldn’t let her go. Not without taking you with her.”

“And Vanessa?” I asked, my mind reeling. “Where does she fit into this?”

Claire sighed. “Vanessa knew. She figured it out months after the accident. She realized what Adrian had done. And instead of turning him in… she made a deal. She would keep his secret. In exchange, he married her. She would become Mia’s stepmother. She would have everything Elena once had.”

My stomach turned. The two people in that house… the two adults I had known and lived with… one had possibly killed my mother, and the other had known and used it for power.

“They’re both monsters,” I said, tears spilling over.

“Not quite,” Claire said. “Vanessa is greedy and cruel. But she didn’t kill Elena. She found out later. And she’s been holding it over Adrian ever since. That’s why she stayed. That’s why she treated you so badly. Every time she looked at you… she saw Elena. And she saw the proof of what Adrian had done.”

I gripped the locket tight in my hand. “And Sophia? Is she really Vanessa’s sister?”

Claire shook her head. “No. Vanessa has no sister. Sophia is Elena’s cousin. She’s young, idealistic, and she’s been looking for Elena for years. Vanessa found her and told her a twisted version of the story — that Adrian killed Elena, kidnapped you, and was raising you as his own. She sent Sophia to ‘rescue’ you.”

“So Sophia is on our side?”

“She wants to be,” Claire said. “But she’s impulsive. And she believes everything Vanessa tells her. If we aren’t careful… she’ll go straight to Adrian. And then we’ll all be in danger.”

I looked at the note in my hand. The truth is buried where the light meets the water.

“Claire,” I said, looking up. “Do you know what this means? ‘Buried where the light meets the water.’”

Claire went very still. “I think so. Elena used to go there. A small lake on the estate grounds. She said it was the only place she could think clearly. At sunset, the light hits the water… and everything glows gold.”

“Something is buried there,” I said. “Proof. Documents. Whatever she was hiding.”

Claire nodded slowly. “If anyone knows what really happened… it’s Elena. And if she hid proof before she died… then that proof is still there. Waiting for us.”

“We have to go,” I said. “Tonight.”

Claire looked at the clock, then back at me. Her expression hardened into something determined. “We go quietly. We tell no one. And if anything goes wrong… you run. Do you understand me? Straight to the woods. Don’t stop until you reach the road.”

I nodded. My heart was racing, but beneath the fear… something else was growing. Courage. My mother had died protecting me. She had hidden the truth. She had left me clues. And she had given me everything I needed to finish what she started.

I put the locket around my neck and tucked it beneath my pajamas. I folded the notes and slipped them into my pocket.

“Let’s go,” I said.

Claire opened the door and peered out into the hallway. It was empty. Silent. Dark.

But as we stepped out, I glanced back toward the study. The door was slightly open. And inside… I saw Daddy standing in the shadows. Watching us. His face pale and terrible in the dim light.

He knew.

May you like

He had heard everything.
