Chapter 4 - THE CONFRONTATION

Three days passed. The house remained quiet, tense and waiting like a held breath. Daddy spent hours locked in his study, speaking on the phone late into the night. Marcus Vale came and went carrying folders full of papers, his face grave. Claire stayed close to me, watching me with worried eyes, as if she expected something terrible to happen at any moment.
The police had called twice. They were building a case against Vanessa — assault, defamation, creating false evidence. The charges were serious. If convicted, she could go to prison for years. But Vanessa was not staying silent. She was making threats. Demands. Daddy would hang up the phone after speaking to her lawyer and pace the halls, his face dark with anger and something else — fear.
I knew what she was threatening. I had heard him. She was threatening to reveal the truth about my mother. About me.
On the fourth day, Daddy called me into his study.
He sat behind his large mahogany desk, papers scattered everywhere. He looked exhausted, older than his years. He gestured for me to sit across from him.
“Mia,” he began, his voice heavy, “Vanessa has made an offer. She will plead guilty to reduced charges. She will accept probation and community service. She will leave this house, this city, and never contact us again. On one condition.”
My heart sank. “What condition?”
“That you… that we… agree to certain terms. That we do not contest certain claims she has made regarding your background.”
“Claims about my mother?” I asked quietly.
He looked surprised. “How did you —”
“I heard you talking,” I admitted. “A few nights ago. What claims, Daddy? What is she saying?”
He hesitated, then leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “She claims that Elena was not who she said she was. That she used a false name. That she had a past she hid from me. And most dangerously… she claims that I am not your biological father.”
The words hung in the air like shards of glass. I sat perfectly still, my mind reeling.
“Not… your daughter?” I whispered. “That’s impossible. Everyone says I look just like you.”
“I know,” he said gently. “And I believe you are mine. I know you are mine. But Vanessa has documents. Records. A witness. She says she can prove it. And if she takes this to court… if she forces a DNA test… the truth will come out. Whatever it is. And the publicity… the scandal… the questions… it could tear our family apart.”
“And if we agree to her terms?” I asked. “What happens then?”
“She leaves. She stays silent. And in exchange… we agree not to publicly disprove her claims. We let the matter rest. But Mia… if she is right… then legally… I may not have full custody rights.”
My blood ran cold. “She would take me away from you?”
“She would try,” he said grimly. “She claims she has a relative who would be willing to assume legal guardianship. Someone related to you by blood. Someone who has a right to you that I do not.”
“A relative?” My mind flew instantly to the scrap of paper hidden in my jewelry box. Sophia. “Who?”
“Vanessa will not say. She calls her simply ‘the only living blood relative.’ But Mia… I will not let anyone take you away from me. Not without a fight. Not without knowing exactly who this person is and what they really want.”
“Then fight her,” I said, my voice growing stronger. “Find out who she is. Find out what she knows. And prove her wrong.”
He looked at me sadly. “If only it were that simple. She has protected her sources. She has hidden behind lawyers. And every lead I follow seems to end in a dead end. Whoever this relative is… they have covered their tracks very carefully.”
I gripped the arms of my chair. I had the name. I had the phone number. But should I give it to him now? What if Sophia was dangerous? What if calling her only made things worse?
Before I could decide, the phone on his desk rang. He glanced at the screen and paled.
“It’s her,” he said. “Vanessa.”
He answered it and put it on speakerphone. Her voice filled the room — sharp, cold, and utterly without remorse.
“Adrian,” she said, sounding amused. “Have you made up your mind? Time is running out. The judge wants to know how we wish to proceed.”
“I have nothing to say to you,” Daddy said coldly. “Except that your threats are empty. No one will believe your lies.”
“Will they?” Vanessa’s voice turned silky and dangerous. “Even when I show them the birth certificate? The hospital records? The witness who was there the day she arrived? Poor Elena. So beautiful. So desperate. And carrying another man’s child all along.”
Daddy’s hands tightened into fists. “You know nothing about Elena.”
“I know she was married before,” Vanessa said. “I know she changed her name. I know she hid her real identity so well that even you never learned the truth. And I know exactly who the father is.”
“Tell me,” Daddy challenged. “Tell me who you claim he is.”
Vanessa laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Not yet. Accept my offer by tomorrow morning, or I take everything public. And Adrian… bring Mia to court with you. I think she deserves to meet her real family.”
The line went dead.
Daddy stared at the phone in silence, his face pale and rigid with rage.
“She is bluffing,” he said, but he did not sound certain. “She has to be.”
I stood up slowly. “Daddy… what if she isn’t?”
He looked at me, his eyes wet and desperate. “Then we face the truth together. Whatever it is. But I swear to you, Mia… no matter what any piece of paper says, no matter what any test proves… you are my daughter. In every way that matters. Nothing will ever change that.”
I walked around the desk and put my arms around him. He held me tightly, burying his face against my shoulder, trembling with suppressed emotion.
But as I stood there, holding the man I had always called my father, I knew one thing with absolute certainty. Vanessa was not bluffing. She had been planning this for a very long time. She had documents. She had a witness. She had Sophia.
And she was not going to stop until she had destroyed everything we loved.
That night, after Claire had fallen asleep in the chair beside my bed, I sat up and took the scrap of paper from its hiding place. I traced the name Sophia with my finger.
I had to know. I had to speak to her. I had to find out what she knew, and whether she was truly on Vanessa’s side.
I crept quietly out of bed and down the hall to the study. Daddy was asleep on the sofa, exhausted. I took his phone from the table beside him, careful not to make a sound. I knew his passcode — my birthday.
I typed in the number from the scrap of paper. My heart hammered wildly in my chest. I told myself I was doing the right thing. I told myself I was helping. But deep down, I knew I was crossing a line. One that might be impossible to come back from.
The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.
Just as I was about to hang up, someone answered.
“Hello?”
The voice was soft, young, and sounded nothing like Vanessa.
“Is this… Sophia?” I asked, my voice trembling.
There was a pause. “Who is asking?”
“My name is Mia,” I said. “I need to talk to you. About Vanessa. And about my mother.”
May you like
At the other end of the line, Sophia went completely silent. Then, barely above a whisper, she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Mia? You’re alive?”
