Chapter 2 - THE SILENCE AFTER THE STORM

The guests left slowly, quietly, as if afraid that loud voices might shatter the fragile peace we had managed to find. No one stayed to celebrate much longer. The magic of the evening had been washed away along with the pink paint, replaced by something heavier, something that hung in the air like rain before a storm.
Daddy carried me upstairs long before the last guest had exited. He carried me carefully, like I was something precious and easily broken, his coat wrapped tight around me to keep me warm. I rested my head against his shoulder, my eyes heavy with exhaustion, my skin still sticky and cold. Every time I shifted, I felt the ache in my shoulder where Vanessa’s fingers had dug in, and the faint stinging throb on my cheek where she had struck me.
When we reached my bedroom, he set me down gently beside the bath. He knelt and turned on the water, testing it with his hand until it was warm and perfect. Then he paused, looking uncertain, like he was afraid to touch me in case he hurt me too.
“Mia,” he said quietly, “may I help you wash? Or would you prefer Claire?”
I thought about it. Claire was safe, yes. But tonight I needed him. I needed to know that he was really here, that he believed me, that I was truly his and nothing could ever change that.
“You,” I whispered. “I want you.”
He nodded slowly, and I saw his eyes glisten. “Alright, sweetheart. It’s just us.”
He helped me step out of the ruined dress, peeling it away gently, and then he helped me into the warm water. He scrubbed the pink paint from my hair and skin with soft, careful strokes, saying nothing at all for a long time. The paint swirled in pink clouds around me, vanishing down the drain, but the memory of it would not wash away so easily.
As he rinsed my hair, his fingers brushed my cheek. He paused, his thumb tracing gently over the faint red mark. I flinched despite myself.
He pulled his hand back instantly. “Did I hurt you?”
“No,” I said quickly. “It just… stings a little.”
He sat back on the edge of the tub, looking at his hands like he did not recognize them. “I should have seen it sooner. I should have protected you. Every day that I let her near you… I failed you, Mia. I failed you terribly.”
I reached out and touched his face, my small hand cupping his cheek. “You saw it tonight. You saved me.”
He closed his eyes and covered my hand with his own. “Only because a camera caught her. Only because she was foolish enough to record her own cruelty. If that camera hadn’t been there… God only knows how long she would have kept hurting you while I looked the other way.”
His voice broke on those last words. I leaned forward and wrapped my wet arms around his neck, pressing my face into his shirt. He held me back tightly, burying his face against my shoulder, and for a long while we just stayed like that — me warm and clean in the bath, him fully clothed and weeping quietly beside me, two people trying to wash away the terrible things that had happened in our own home.
When I was dry and dressed in soft pajamas, he carried me to bed. He sat beside me, holding my hand, his thumb stroking gently over my knuckles. The lamp cast a warm golden glow across the room, chasing away the shadows.
“Where is she now?” I asked softly. “Vanessa.”
He hesitated. “At the police station. In custody.”
“Will she come back?”
He squeezed my hand firmly. “No. She will never step foot in this house again. No matter what happens — no matter what lawyers say, no matter what anyone tries to tell me — I will never let her near you. Do you believe me?”
“I do,” I said. And I meant it.
“Good.” He leaned down and kissed my forehead. “Now sleep. I will be right outside your door. Claire will be here soon to sit with you through the night. Nothing is going to hurt you anymore, Mia. I promise.”
He stood up and walked toward the door. Just before he left, he paused and looked back. “I love you more than anything in this world. Never forget that.”
“I love you too, Daddy.”
He closed the door, and I heard his footsteps move slowly down the hall. Moments later, Claire came in. She wore soft clothes, her hair down, and she carried warm milk and a blanket. She sat in the chair beside my bed just as Daddy had promised. I felt safe. I felt loved. And yet… as I drifted off to sleep, one thought kept circling in my mind like a bird with nowhere to land.
Vanessa had said some very strange things that night. She had shouted threats as the officers led her away — about betrayal, about secrets, about how Daddy would regret turning against her. And then there was the message in that folder. The one she had sent to her sister. If Adrian keeps favoring that child over me, I will make sure she becomes impossible to love.
Those words sounded so certain. So full of dark knowledge. Like she had something waiting in the shadows, something she had been saving for just such an emergency.
I told myself it was just angry talk. I told myself she was finished, that she could not hurt me anymore. But deep down, beneath the relief and the warmth and the safety, a tiny seed of fear had been planted. Because if Vanessa was willing to pour paint over a child and lie to everyone she knew just to make me look bad… what else was she capable of?
And who exactly was her sister? No one had ever met her. She was never at family gatherings. She was never in photographs. Vanessa spoke of her sometimes, but always vaguely, always at a distance.
I rolled over and closed my eyes, clutching my stuffed bear tight. Outside my door, I heard Daddy’s voice. He was speaking to someone on the phone, his tone low and intense. Then I heard him say something that made my eyes fly open.
“…Yes, I know what she’s threatening. That’s exactly why we need to be careful. If what she claims is true —”
He stopped suddenly. There was a long silence. Then he said, “No. We cannot let Mia know. Not yet. Not until we are certain.”
My heart began to beat faster. What was true? What was Vanessa threatening? And why could I not know?
I slipped quietly out of bed and crept to the door. I pressed my ear against the wood, listening as hard as I could.
“…She says she has proof,” Daddy continued, his voice tight with worry. “Proof that would tear this family apart. That would change everything we believe about who Mia really is.”
My breath caught in my throat.
“Vanessa claims she knows the truth,” Daddy said quietly, “about who Mia’s mother actually was.”
Someone knocked on the door then. I jumped back, my heart hammering so hard I thought Claire might hear it. I scrambled back into bed and pulled the covers up just as Claire stepped quietly into the room.
“Still awake, little one?” she asked gently.
I nodded, unable to speak.
She smiled and sat beside me. “Everything alright?”
I looked at her — at her kind face, her steady eyes, the hands that had protected me when no one else would. I wanted to tell her what I had heard. I wanted to ask her what Vanessa meant. What truth? What about my mother?
But something stopped me. Daddy had said I must not know yet. And if Vanessa was the one making the claim… then whatever she was saying was surely a lie. Just another trick. Just another way to hurt me.
And yet… the doubt had already taken root. If it was all a lie, why had Daddy sounded so afraid?
“Mia?” Claire asked softly, brushing hair back from my face. “What is troubling you?”
“Nothing,” I lied, pulling the covers higher. “Just… bad dreams.”
She nodded, seeming to accept the answer. “Sleep then. I am right here. No one will hurt you.”
“I know,” I whispered.
But as I closed my eyes, I knew one thing for certain. Vanessa was gone — but she had left a weapon behind. A secret. A claim. Something about my mother.
And as I drifted into sleep, I made myself a quiet promise. I would find out what she meant. I would learn the truth about my mother. No matter where it led. No matter how much it might hurt.
May you like
Because if there was even a chance that Vanessa could come back and take my life away from me… then I needed to know exactly what I was fighting for.
