Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

Three months later, Adrian called us all into the library. He stood behind his desk, looking tired but calm. He held a thick stack of documents in his hands.
“I received a letter from Marcus’s lawyers this morning,” he said. “They are appealing the verdict. And they have made an offer.”
Sophia sat up straight. “What kind of offer?”
“If we agree to drop our objections… to accept the verdict as final and not pursue further charges… they will agree to never come near Mia again. No appeals. No requests for custody. No claims of any kind. In exchange… we agree to keep certain information sealed.”
“What information?” I asked.
Adrian looked at me. “Information about your birth. About Elena’s past. About everything Marcus did. They want it sealed. Protected from public view. So that one day… it will be as if none of it ever happened.”
I thought about it. The truth was ours. We knew it. The courts knew it. But the world… the world would never know who Marcus really was. Or what he had done. Or why Elena had died.
“They want to protect his name,” I said quietly. “His reputation.”
“Yes,” Adrian said. “And in exchange… they will leave you alone forever. No more threats. No more lawyers. No fear that one day… he might try to return.”
I looked at Sophia. At Claire. At Adrian. All of them waiting for my answer.
Marcus was my blood. But he was not my family. He had killed my mother. He had tried to use me. He had caused all of us nothing but pain. And now… he wanted to buy his silence. He wanted to pay for his reputation with my peace.
And the price was high — letting the world forget what he had done. Letting his name remain clean. Letting Elena’s death remain, to the outside world, a tragic accident and nothing more.
But if we refused… if we fought… there would be years of appeals. Court dates. Public scrutiny. Every detail of my life, my birth, my mother’s past… would be spread across newspapers and television. Strangers would speculate. Strangers would judge. Strangers would know my name.
I looked at the locket around my neck. Elena had hidden the truth to protect me. She had changed her name. She had run away. She had wanted me to live in peace. Not in the shadow of her secrets. Not in the glare of public light.
Elena had chosen protection over justice. And she had been right. Justice matters. But peace… matters more.
“Accept the offer,” I said.
Adrian looked surprised. “Mia… are you certain? It means his name will be cleared in public. It means people will never truly know what he did.”
“Elena knew,” I said. “We know. And that is enough. Justice doesn’t have to be loud to be real. He is in prison. He will die there. And I… I will be free. Free to be me. Not his daughter. Not his heir. Not his story.”
Adrian studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. “You are so like her. She made the same choice, you know. Again and again. She chose peace over war. She chose you over everything.”
“Then she would have chosen this too,” I said.

Adrian picked up his pen. He signed the papers. And with that… Marcus Vale became a secret. A memory. A ghost locked away where he could never hurt anyone again.
