Chapter 3 - THE LAST MESSAGE

My wife appeared on the screen. She looked frail, her skin pale, her hair thin, but her eyes were clear and steady, locked straight into the camera as if she were looking directly at me. She sat in our bedroom, the light soft behind her, her hands folded carefully in her lap. She took a slow breath before she spoke, and her voice was calm, firm, and terrifyingly sad.

“If you are watching this… then I was right to be afraid.”

My throat tightened. I leaned forward, my elbows resting on the desk, unable to look away.

“Adrian, my love. I do not want to leave you. And I do not want to leave Noah. But the doctors tell me my time is short. And there is something I must tell you before I go. Something I have carried in silence because I had no proof… until now.”

She reached forward and touched the lens gently, as if touching my face.

“Vanessa came to see me three days ago. She thought I was asleep. She did not know I heard every word she said to the nurse. She said she would have everything I left behind. She said she would erase me from your lives. She said once I was gone… there would be nothing standing between her and Noah. And you.”

I felt a cold prickle run down my spine. This was not paranoia. This was fact. Spoken by the woman Vanessa had pretended to care for.

“I do not know exactly what she is planning,” my wife continued. “But I know she is hiding something. Something terrible. I have seen the way she looks at Noah. Not with love… but with hunger. She wants to control him. She wants to replace me. And she will stop at nothing to do it. If she is cruel to him… if she tries to turn him against me… if she locks him away… then you will know. She is dangerous, Adrian. Far more dangerous than any of us ever guessed.”

She paused, and tears slipped down her cheeks. She wiped them away quickly, forcing her voice to stay strong.

“I hid this drive inside Noah’s bear because I knew he would never let anyone take it from him. Not even Vanessa. If you are watching this… it means Vanessa has shown her true face. Protect our son. Do not trust a single word she says. And look deeper, my love. There is more. She is not working alone. But I ran out of time… and I could not prove the rest. Be careful. Watch your back. And promise me… you will keep Noah safe from her.”

The video ended. The screen went black.

I sat there for a very long time. The silence in the room felt deafening. She had known. My beautiful, brave wife had known exactly what Vanessa was, and she had been too afraid to tell me openly while she was still alive, knowing Vanessa might retaliate before the warning could reach me. She had left me this evidence as her last hope. And she had said something that chilled me more than anything else: She is not working alone.

Not working alone.

Who else? Her father? A secret partner? Someone inside this house?

I stood up and walked out of the office. I went straight to Noah’s room. He was still sleeping peacefully, unaware that his mother had reached out from beyond the grave to save him. I sat beside his bed and held his small hand, thinking about everything I had just seen. Vanessa had been confident when she left. She had threatened courts and influence and status. She had not seemed like someone who was afraid of losing. Which meant she believed she could explain everything away. That she had backup. That someone would protect her.

My phone buzzed. An unknown number. A text message appeared on the screen.

**DELETE THE FILE. WALK AWAY. OR YOU WILL LOSE MORE THAN JUST YOUR FIANCEE.**

My blood ran cold. Someone was watching me. Someone knew exactly what I had just seen. I stood up and walked to the window. The street outside looked normal. Quiet. Empty. But someone was out there. Someone was waiting.

I looked down at the message again. Then I looked back at Noah, sleeping safe and unaware. My wife’s final words echoed in my mind: Be careful. Watch your back.

She was not working alone.
