Chapter 16 - THE HIDDEN TRUTH

In the weeks that followed, we unraveled everything Robert Sterling had left behind. And the deeper we dug, the darker it became.
Elena and I went through every document, every email, every encrypted file recovered from the warehouse and from Vanessa’s devices. We found things that made my blood run cold.
There were messages between Robert and Vanessa dating back to before my wife had even fallen ill. Discussions. Plans. Timelines. They had been waiting. Watching. Robert had encouraged Vanessa to pursue me. To “secure the heir.” To position herself as the grieving widow and savior.
My wife had not just suspected Vanessa. She had known. Because Robert had come to her, shortly before she died, and told her plainly that he intended to have Noah raised as a Sterling. That blood entitled them. That she was merely an obstacle. That her wishes would not matter.
She had hidden the bear. Recorded the video. Left everything she could. Because she had known that even death would not stop them.
And then we found the final file. A voice memo recorded by Vanessa, two days before she vanished.
*“Father says if I cannot get Noah… no one can. He says the boy is half his blood and belongs to the Sterlings. He says Adrian is an obstacle to be removed. He does not care about me. He never did. He will sacrifice me to get what he wants. I have to protect myself. And I have to protect the boy. Because if Father finds him… he will be far crueler than I ever was.”*
Vanessa had known. She had been trapped between a father who would destroy her and a family she wanted to conquer. She had chosen the wrong path, made terrible choices, hurt an innocent child—but in her final hours, she had realized exactly what kind of monster she had been serving.
I thought of her body lying on that concrete floor. Of her final words. He wanted Noah. She had tried to warn me. In her own twisted way… she had tried.
Elena sat across from me at the kitchen table as the memo ended. Noah was asleep in the next room. Safe. For now.
“Robert Sterling will keep running,” Elena said. “But he will not stop. He will watch. He will wait. He will hunt. Adrian… you cannot stay here. You cannot be Adrian anymore. Not where he can find you.”
I looked toward Noah’s bedroom door. I thought of everything we had lost. Everything we had survived. And I thought of the promise I had made to my wife. To protect our son. At any cost.
“Then we disappear too,” I said. “Completely. New names. New home. New life. Somewhere he will never think to look.”

“And if he finds you?”
“Then I will be waiting. And I will be ready.”
