Chapter 12 - THE ULTIMATUM

I called Elena immediately. She answered on the first ring, and when I told her what had happened, her voice turned sharp and urgent.
“Do not go alone. Do not answer any message or meet any location without law enforcement present. She is desperate, Adrian. Desperate people do not bargain fairly.”
But by morning, a new message arrived on my phone—sent from Olivia’s number. A photo. Olivia sat bound to a chair in a dim, unfamiliar room, her face pale, a bruise darkening along her jaw. Beneath the photo, a single sentence: BRING THE RECORDER. BRING THE VIDEO. COME ALONE. OR SHE DIES. AND THEN WE COME FOR THE BOY.
My blood turned to ice. She was holding her own sister hostage. Using her as bait. To get back the only evidence that could destroy her.
Elena arrived within twenty minutes. She stared at the screen, her expression grim.
“It is a trap. Plain and simple. You hand over the evidence… and she kills both of you. You do not come… and she kills Olivia anyway.”
“What choice do I have?” I said quietly. “She is her sister. But she is also an innocent woman who tried to warn me.”
Elena looked at me for a long moment. “There is always a third choice. We give her what she thinks is the evidence. But we keep the originals. And we let law enforcement walk in with you. She will never know they are there until it is too late.”
That afternoon, I prepared. I made exact duplicates of every file. I loaded them onto an identical black USB drive. I kept the originals in three separate secure locations, unreachable even if I vanished. I told Noah I was going away for a short time. I handed him to Elena’s most trusted investigator. I knelt before him and held his small hands.
“Whatever happens… whatever anyone tells you… remember this. I love you more than life itself. And I will always come back for you. No matter what.”
He stared at me with eyes too old for his age. “Be careful, Daddy. She lies.”
“I know. I will be careful.”
The meeting place was an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town—isolated, silent, surrounded by empty fields. I arrived first. I stood beneath the rusted metal roof, holding the drive in one hand, my heart hammering so hard I could hear it over the wind. I had promised Elena I would signal when I saw Vanessa. I had promised I would not do anything reckless.
Then she stepped out of the shadows.
Vanessa looked wild. Her hair loose and unkempt. Her clothes wrinkled. A dark look in her eyes I had never seen before—part fear, part madness, part absolute resolve. Behind her stood two large men I had never seen before. And between them, bound and gagged, walked Olivia. They shoved her roughly into a chair.
“Put the drive on the ground,” Vanessa said, her voice trembling. “And kick it toward me. Slowly. And keep your hands where I can see them.”
I set the drive down. “Let her go, Vanessa. She is your sister.”
“She chose your side!” Vanessa snapped. “She betrayed me! Just like everyone else! Now give me what belongs to me!”
“You will never get away with this. The police are already—”

“Liar!” She pulled a gun from beneath her coat and pointed it straight at my chest. “Do not think I did not check. No sirens. No cars. Just you. Alone. Now kick it!”
In that moment, I realized something terrible. She had outsmarted us. She had watched. She had waited. She had known exactly when Elena’s team would be delayed by the roadblocks she had arranged. I was truly alone. With a gun pointed at my heart. And a woman who had already proven she was capable of anything.
